17 Inmates die in shootout at Ciudad Juarez prison

A shootout at the municipal jail in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico's murder capital, left 17 inmates dead and 20 others wounded, a city spokesman said Tuesday.

The shootout occurred Monday night at the jail in Juarez, located across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, municipal spokesman Manuel del Castillo said.

A woman was among those killed in the incident, Del Castillo said, adding that four of the wounded inmates were listed in serious condition at a hospital in the border city.

Shooting broke out between members of the rival Los Aztecas and Los Mexicles gangs at the prison, the city spokesman said.

Los Mexicles works as the armed wing of the Sinaloa drug cartel in the border city, while Los Aztecas provides enforcers for La Linea, a gang allied with the Juarez cartel.

The cartels have been battling for control of the border city, unleashing a wave of violence that has left thousands of people dead since 2006.

The gang members had firearms and gained control of guards' weapons, jail spokesman Hector Conde said.

Army troops, Federal Police officers and municipal police, as well as transit police officers, were sent to the jail to end the shootout, which lasted more than one hour.

The situation at the jail, which houses about 2,300 prisoners, was brought under control around 2:00 a.m.

Ciudad Juarez has been plagued by drug-related violence for years.

The murder rate took off in the gritty border city of 1.5 million people in 2007, when 310 people were killed, then it more than tripled to 1,607 in 2008, according to Chihuahua state Attorney General's Office figures, with the number of killings climbing to 2,754 in 2009.

More than 3,100 people were murdered in the border city last year, making 2010 the worst year since a war between rival drug gangs sent the homicide rate skyrocketing in 2008.

The killing has not slowed this year, with more than 1,000 people murdered in Juarez.

The violence is blamed on the war for control of the border city being waged by the Juarez and Sinaloa cartels with backing from hitmen from local street gangs.
At least 14,000 "armed criminals" are in Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua city, the state capital, working for the drug cartels that are fighting for control of smuggling routes into the United States, Chihuahua Attorney General Carlos Manuel Salas said last month.

About 5,500 of the armed criminals operating in Ciudad Juarez belong to Los Aztecas, a gang that works as the armed wing of the Juarez cartel, while the rest work for the Sinaloa cartel, Salas said.

The violence has not subsided in Ciudad Juarez despite the deployment of nearly 10,000 soldiers and Federal Police officers in the border city.

  1. GOOD! Kill them off in prison! Better than giving them 3 year sentences like that brat kid. They need to start making examples out of people so the new recruits won't be so quick to join.

  2. An estimated 14,000 armed criminals terrorize a city of 1 million citizens.

The aztecas are outnumbered 2 to 1 but still are fighting strong.

Thousands of murdered victims and el chapo is still hiding like a lil' bitch.

Process of elimination has to exist in mexico. Mexico has too many poor people and not enough jobs. As long as these violent criminals destroy each other, i have no problem with that. Less hate in this world.

    ADIOS AMIGOS!

  3. Check this out: Local reports in Juarez assert that one of the numerous versions as to the events in the jail are as follows. The riot and the prison break attempt was not actually as stated officially by authorities. Apparently, local authorities and criminals within the jail were in cahoots to allow the massacre of some individuals that were in intake tanks. Another version states that what was taking place inside the jail was a sort of orgy with a 15 your old girl prostituting herself to multiple inmates among others and that the paerty had been going on since sunday night. Some claim that all the victims of the massacre were Aztecas, some claim that they were all Mexicles/AA. The fact is that all the victims were recently captured for extortion, kidnapping, and carjacking/robbery. It is notable that some of the most recent arrests have been AA known by their telltale tatoos 2 stars one on either shoulder. Supposedly, the orgy was a planned prelude to the massacre as inmates took advantage of the apparent appeasement by guards who figured this to be the least opportune moment for any such event given the party and all. The attackers subdued guards and took their weapons. The ensuing gun fight between inmates and police outside the prison walls and the various diversion tactics around the city seem to not fit into this theory. But if a prison break was in store then what about the orgy a full day before. And if this was an inter-gang aggression and the inmates were in power of assault rifles among other weapons then why not breach the secured areas and massacre top level and hardcore gang members. It all seems confusing as the federal police asserts that it was in fact a prison break, but local news have posed this more detailed version pieced together from first hand accounts and physical evidence. Go figure. Can't judge a book by its cover and can't believe everything official press releases from the authorities in Mexico state.

  10. Give them all guns and let them kill each other, they are not smart enough to implement a legalized death penalty in Mexico...

  11. it's crazy to make someone "an example" of something to stop them from doing these things..i would thing all that skinning and hanging and butchering of bodies found everywhere nowadays would make an example of what happens when you "work" in that field, and will deter these people from joining such groups...
