Gunmen in Piedras Negras Attack, Block Roads and Terrorize the City

By Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat

Update at bottom, arrests made...

Chaos and panic erupted last night in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, the Mexican city that shares the border with Eagle Pass Texas.

Around 8PM twitterers and libre network users began reporting that shootouts were occurring in various sectors of the city in what media sources are calling a “narco rebellion”. In the aftermath Sergio Sisbeles, a spokesman for security affairs of Coahuila,   stated there were 10 known casualties of the attacks with no apparent losses by the narco group, but possibly there may be civilian casualties.

Elements of GATE (special weapons and tactics group) and the narco group engaged in battle on Highway 75 and various parts of Piedras Negras. Using combat weapons and granadazos (grenades) the attacks lasted for hours.

Terror griped the city causing widespread turmoil. The first confrontation broke out on Highway 57 at around 5 PM and the Micare plant and offices. The violence triggered American federal authorities to close the two international bridges in Eagle Pass, Texas.

A girls softball tournament was in progress while the violence was occurring, as the shootout ensued close to the playing field creating hysteria by the players and those attending the game, as they ran to safety.

Buses were stopped by the gunmen, passengers robbed and the buses set afire.

The armed gunmen are believed to be the Los Zetas cartel known to have control of Piedras Negras and are most likely responsible for the attacks. The border with Mexico, Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras was closed to protect American citizens and prevent the violence from crossing over into the United States.

By using buses and a crane, it was the gunmen themselves that blocked highway 57, and the Acuna/Piedras highway, virtually isolating and paralyzing the city.  Bullet ridden vehicles were left inoperable by the gunmen shooting out the tires leaving hundreds of “ponchallantas” (punctured tires) scattered and blocking the main traffic arteries of the city.

A GATE officer was killed in the shootings, Maria Guadalupe Delgadillo, age 21, was dead at the scene however her fellow officer was alive but seriously wounded, he and the other wounded officers were taken to IMSS Clinic 11 for medical treatment, one in critical condition, four others serious condition and five in fair condition.

Army tanks remained at the hospital to protect the safety of the wounded officers. This action was taken hoping to prevent the gunmen from gaining entrance and killing the officers, as often occurs in Mexico to survivors of such attacks.

Recently, Piedras was one of the border cities receiving additional security as additional troops arrived such as the Marina and equipment including helicopters. On Monday of this week GATE troops arrived, and clearly preventing even greater loss of human life and property.

UPDATE:  Coahuila's Prosecutor's Office   announced the arrest of Eusebio Hernandez Olivas, alias "El Chebo" and Eduardo Hernández Reyes alias "El Guero". These individuals were arrested in the vicinity of the road that leads from Piedras Negras to the ciudad Acuña and were arrested for involvement in the Piedras attack.  (see fotos below)  The state also emphasized that the GATE elements were deployed to Piedras this week to combat the alarming elevation of kidnapping and carjacking incidents in the city.

    2. Obviously, you know nothing about Mexico. Mexico has been in upheavel since 1910 and everything has lied "Dormant" until the 90's when almost 70% of the Drugs started coming across the Border
via Mexico and the local Jeffe's started becoming "Cartels". Then in the early part of 2000 the
"Greed" button came into play as well as the violence and murders. So it's no longer a politcal
type of violence but a "Human Greed" type (worst type) thats in play now. No matter which Politions are in power until drugs are no longer profitable this will never stop!

    3. In Afghanistan the USA is fighting rebels and terrorists that were trained by the USA to help stabilize the region when Afghanistan was 'friendly' Iraq was 'friendly' and supported by the USA to stabilize the region when Iran was 'unfriendly' same story with north korea and south korea. How come the cartels in Mexico are so powerful? They have USA supplied arms and a huge customer base in the USA. Almost all the arms used by terrorists on Northern Ireland were funded by Irish Americans. I believe there would be fewer problems of violence in the world if the USA stopped supplying weapons to supposedly friendly organizations.

  5. Do Mexicans have any idea of how their country is mocked and ridiculed world-wide? It used to be Colombians who were the butt of drug jokes. Now even the Colombians mock Mexico as a corrupt, crime-ridden hole, ruled by illiterate thugs. Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan look good by comparison!

  9. Acuna has had two shootouts this year, one in which innocent bystanders were hit. Both were between Zs and the Marina. Though Acuna is on the state department list of cities to avoid it truly is a city with little violence.

The marines were deployed there in 2011, and they are constructins a permanent naval base in the prensa, and they have a permanent army post and barracks.

It seems wherever their is a large deployment of soldiers at some point they are tested by the ruling cartel. In PN and Acuna both that would be the last letter.

Saltillo is the city that violence has incresed greatly. My staff was there last week and were forced to stay in their hotel because of a shootout. Yesterday and today there were other shootouts, sadly it seems status quo now...Paz, Chivis

  43. The US trained the original Zeta gunmen...supposedly to assist Mexico with the war on drugs...It is not the first time the US trains paramilitary groups such as the Zetas...just think back to Alqaeda back when they were fighting side by side against the russians..It was no surprise when news came out about Fast and Furious...if you ask me it was part of the plan to supply weapons to their newly created group and then just sit back and wait for people on both sides to call for an intervention. I heard from someone that hangs with them that at one point they were training with Israelis in acuna coah..perhaps they were not israelis but the connection is there and it was never about a narco group that grew too powerful..If you ask me all this was planned from the start. Best thing honest hardworking people can do on both sides is stop fighting amongst themselves..be armed and be alert. This sort of movements do not go away..they only get worse until they reach a breaking point. The good ol days are gone..So sad..love both countries and good hard working people on both sides. But do not call for an end to gun rights...defend your right to keep and bear arms because corruption is rampant on both sides. Peace.

This argument of US and guns is old and ineffective. One could argue Mex corruption and ineffective guarding of its borders are at fault. and the drugwar? Your leaders thought it was ok making a deal with the devil and looking the other way as narcos trafficked drugs to the kids in the US, until those narcos became so powerful they could buy anything...even people. only THEN it became a problem!

and the guns you speak of? Yes Americans have the right to bear arms...and guess what? our country is still safe with all those weapons..why? it is not the weapons it is the system of law and order that Mexico does not have that makes us safe! that should be your fight not the arms of the US.

When you take arms away from law abiding citizens you in effect render them helpless against those who do not care about laws. Look at your country...citizens without arms...narcos armed for war, don't blame the US, look in the mirror...Paz, Chivis

Not proven? It's admitted. No conspiracy there except that you are not going to get a statement from your leaders saying oh yes, this is what we planned all along. Like I said, they've done it before in other countries but that won't be said in CNN or Fox News...But the information is out there for those who want to look for it.

Fast and Furious was not a dumb mistake; come on, the people holding office are way smarter than the rest of us..that's why they made it to that position in the first place..And they know we will take Oops! for an answer to Fast and Furious.

    http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2010/10/20101019212440609775.html

"Some of the cartel's initial members were elite Mexican troops, trained in the early 1990s by America’s 7th Special Forces Group or "snake eaters" at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, a former US special operations commander has told Al Jazeera.

“They were given map reading courses, communications, standard special forces training, light to heavy weapons, machine guns and automatic weapons,” says Craig Deare, the former special forces commander who is now a professor at the US National Defence University.

"I had some visibility on what was happening, because this [issue] was related to things I was doing in the Pentagon in the 1990s," Deare, who also served as country director in the office of the US Secretary of Defence, says.

"Other cartels have accused the Zetas of not following the 'gentlemen's code' of drug trafficking"

    Kristen Bricker, NACLA Research Associate

The Mexican personnel who received US training and later formed the Zetas came from the Airmobile Special Forces Group (GAFE), which is considered an elite division of the Mexican military.

Their US training was designed to prepare them for counter-insurgency and, ironically, counter-narcotics operations, although Deare says they were not taught the most advanced commando techniques available at Ft. Bragg.

Military forces from around the world train at Ft. Bragg, so there is nothing unique about Mexican operatives learning counter-insurgency tactics at the facility. However, critics say the specific skills learned by the Zetas primed them for careers as contract killers and drug dealers."

  62. As we all lament the evil and bloodshed being committed, please take the time to examine your own conscience: do you smoke a little weed on the weekend to relax? Do you do a little blow at parties? If so, then you are creating the demand that fuels this violence and are partially resonsible for it. Without demand, the drug trade dies, along with the carnage.

True, the drug lords are evil incarnate: sadistic and ruthless. But if we collectively stop buying their products, they have nothing to fight for. Do what's right. Pass it on to your friends!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Whilst the Mexican drug trade was dominated by a few large cartels, there was relative peace, although clearly ongoing violence.

When the US declared its War on Drugs, pushing money and importantly political pressure into Mexico to eradicate Mexican drug cartels (instead of helping users and potential users at home) it worked to a degree - the old cartels where more or less smashed.

However, the elimination of the established cartels created a classic power vacuum into which far more numerous, diverse and violent gangs could move into, vying for the incredibly lucrative US illicit drugs market.

What we are seeing in Mexio today is essentially a giant turf war written in the blood of Mexican civilians funded by US drug habits on one side and US taxpayer dollars on the other.

Sending more men and women with guns into these areas does nothing to address the underlying problem, and will only create more death. It is a deeply callous world view that thinks sending in the Marines would solve any of these problems, and one deeply lacking in humanity that does not want to assist Mexicans, but rather execute them.

Until US and world demand for drugs drops (impossible without a proper system of welfare, which will almost certainly never happen in the States); a singular or small groups of cartels comes to dominate; or the drugs in which they deal become legalised, the war - and it is a war - with, for and on drugs will never be won. As it is, we can at best hope for a hollow ''mission accomplished" hauted by the ruin of a nation and the cries of the brutally murdered.
