Canada: restaurateur alledgedly killed over $5M cocaine debt to Mexican cartel

Canadiana for Borderland Beat from Toronto Star

A Roncesvalles wine bar owner may have been shot dead Friday afternoon because his associates had an outstanding $5-million debt to a Mexican drug cartel, police and underworld sources say.

Paolo Caputo, 64, of Richmond Hill, was killed in a targeted shooting in front of Domani Restaurant, on Roncesvalles Ave. near Grenadier Rd., shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday.

The suspected gunman fled in a waiting SUV, police say.

Witnesses reported the sound of two gunshots. A gun was found at the scene.

Multiple sources said that Caputo may have been targeted for murder over a drug debt owed by his associates to a Mexican drug cartel active in the GTA.

The debt stems from a massive drug rip-off connected to the June 2012 murder of John Raposo, 35, of Toronto, who was shot dead while watching Euro Cup soccer on TV on a crowded patio at the Sicilian Sidewalk Café on College St. in 2012, the sources say

Caputo’s brother, Martino Caputo, is serving a life sentence as one of four men convicted of first-degree murder in the Raposo shooting.

At their trial, prosecutors said Raposo was shot to death at close range in a plot to steal his share of a 200 kilogram cocaine shipment.

According to police and underworld sources, the Mexican cartel that fronted the drugs to Raposo, Martino Caputo and others was never fully paid and had become frustrated with repeated attempts to collect.

Raposo was shot to death by Dean Wiwchar, a former Stouffville resident who was working for a criminal group called the Wolfpack Alliance.

Wiwchar was also convicted of first-degree murder in the Raposo murder, as was Nicola Nero, of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Rabih (Bobby) Alkhalil, of Montreal.

A police source compared Paolo Caputo’s murder to the 1991 slaying of Thornhill resident Giovanni Costa, 38, who was shot to death on Draper Blvd., in the area of Dufferin and Centre Sts.

Costa was not a criminal, but he was killed to punish family members who were involved in an ongoing feud between criminal, groups in Canada and Italy, court later heard.

Paolo Caputo was a gambler who often hosted Montreal Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto at his now-closed Forest Hill restaurant, police and underworld sources said. He was also involved in poker games that funnelled money to the Rizzuto organization, police said.

Rizzuto, considered Canada’s top Mafia boss, died suddenly of natural causes in December 2013.

Paolo Caputo’s younger brother Martino was considered by police and underworld sources to be far more active and tightly tied to the Rizzuto organization.

At the time of his murder, Paolo Caputo was trying to sell his wine bar for $249,000, according to an online listing.

The listing states the property is fully air-conditioned and 3,486 square feet.

“Renovated restaurant located in Roncesvalles Village,” the listing reads. “Totally turn key with a full kitchen and walk-in cooler. Currently serving Italian cuisine. Can easily convert to any cuisine.”

Police describe Paolo Caputo’s killer as a thin male with a fair complexion and five-foot-eleven to six-foot-two. He fled west on Constance St. in a white, four-door SUV, which was driven by someone else, police say.

Paolo Caputo was arrested in November 2007 with dozens of other men after police raided what they called a high stakes poker game held behind locked doors at a social club on Finch Ave. W. near Dufferin St.

The OPP organized crime unit estimated that operation grossed more than $1 million yearly, and that it funneled funds to Rizzuto.

  5. People who can't buy cash rarely pay later, their skank lives or their family and friends' just make the loses worse and there is usually cops behind the see you later pay you later scam. In the best scenario the credit buyers are trying to encroach on established dealers turf that will not allow for any BS.
Mr Caputo with his NXIVM rebozo looks like the kind of guy who buys and pays for love, Mexican heirs, actors, policitians' children and daughters members of the sect wear the same rag, identified as Keith Raniere's children of a lesser god.

  6. Fake news! What sources?
Raposo was murdered for being a rat, getting the Nick Nero crew's warehouse busted.
From planning to finish the Raposo hit took six months and if they were buddies and PLANNING to rip him it would've been easy to set him up at a meeting, but Raposo knew they were onto his ratting and the hit was in a public restaurant patio!
Isn't good publicity when Police informants get hit. Bad for recruting.

  7. Toronto, Montreal and Hamilton has been in a low level Mafia war for the past 6 or 7 years between the Sicilians and Calabrians(Ndrangheta)with 5 or 6 murders per year(nothing by Mexican gang standards).
The Ndrangheta killed the Sicilian Caputo!

    2. Wow! 5 to 6 per year! Wait until it gets as bad as in the states. 5 to 6 per month is low when the lowlife criminals infest your city.

  17. i grew up in the infamous DTES or downtown eastside in vancouver. i made an account in the blog because i am well connected and can be considered the specialist for this area. My family /cousins are involved in something called the "east end chapter" of hells angels club. i grew up with mid level traffickers and know pretty much everything about the area and the crime groups that controll it. the police do nothing and the only worry for these guys is being killed by other crime groups. The asians are a cancer to vancouver and the country ..many high level triads operate out of vancouver and the casinos are used to launder illicit funds. my ex GF worked in the casinos as a VIP manager. so she met and wined and dined many of these characters. because of the ports we have connected to hong kong the drugs are very pure and ports are completely corrupt as well. cocaine is wrapped and shipped from vancouver to other east coast hubs as the price per kilo is much cheaper in vancouver BC compared to toronto EC. east coast areas. but dont be fooled of course the white man controls ALL and the hells angels have an iron grip on the country. most importantly vancouver ports are controlled by angels. many of the port workers are married or connected with the hells angels directly and negotiate pricing and transport with other crime groups eg indo canadian, chinese, mexican. they are charged a piso or tax. per shipment or else a "drug bust" occurs. the port worker calls in a TIP on one of the drug loads when tax is unpaid. unions control the port and the union is controlled by angels.

my cousin would fly from toronto to vancouver for big shopping sprees at big name stores we have here like LV and gucci. he then would wrap kilos in my apartment downtown with gloves on and then drive back to east coast after MAILing them back to cities he has contacts in like winnipeg montreal and the GTO. or he would mail them essentially to himself but across the country to safe houses. he is mid level and a servant really. He has this thing called "the circle of trust" he is not the leader.. another man is and he is under strict orders not to allow anyone to ever meet or know anything that goes on between them. "the circle of trust" from what i know is a group of men that he contacts only through a special encrypted blackberry that he does not carry. he has a woman hold it for him and only when he needs to meet up he uses it to contact them. i know about computers and i was curious about the blackberry so i asked him. it is encrypted by a private company in the balkans (security experts) that use 2fa among others and the messages themselves are also encrypted and "burn to read". this technology was sold and used by israeli army and is best of the best and has never been cracked. to date. the phones dont run blackberry os and the sim cards are changed every month sometimes twice a month to correlate with the speed and time it takes to build an indictment/ or criminal case. these people are not stupid and they dont want to go back to federal prison. also phones are not used for business..just to arrange meeting times and places. i have never been aloud to a meeting although i asked him.. one night we were drinking and he had to leave to go to a "circle of trust meeting at a restaurant" it was celebratory and he almost let me come. he called his boss to ask permission if i could come to the dinner as i am family and well trusted. BOSS said FUCK NO. and he was yelled at over phone. i could hear him apologizing for "being stupid".. and then told me sorry i could not come. he told me a few years back the boss was locked up with the president of the hells angels on the eastcoast for some time and that is how the organization was established.

  18. Discriminating, yes. Racist no. Any low lifes that live above the laws of nations should get what they deserve.Italians r awesome as r Canucks and the Mexicans. I'm talking about the criminal elements that all countries live with. Strangely enough it starts with speed bumps. We all have to put up with speed bumps because of the few knuckleheads that live amongst us. I don't hang with anyone that cuts corners. Take the long smooth way around. Work like a dog for 40 years, it's quite satisfying. Woof, Woof:)
