Emma Coronel, wife of the founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquín el Chapo Guzmán will spend 36 months in a United States prison. The judge of the District of Columbia, Rudolph Contreras has imposed a sentence of 36 months in prison on Tuesday for drug trafficking and money laundering. The sentence was not a surprise, since Coronel was pointed out by prosecutors as a minor participant in the drug trafficking issue.
Accustomed to expensive designs and high stilettos, Emma Coronel, 31, heard this Tuesday with shackles on her ankles, thinner and paler, the charges that the US Department of Justice imputes to her. The former beauty queen is accused of collaborating with El Chapo in drug trafficking and money laundering.
Coronel had the right to speak before the sentencing, a moment that she took the opportunity to ask the judge for clemency to be able to return with her twins. United States prosecutors wanted Coronel to be sentenced to 48 months in prison on the grounds that she was just a cog in the Sinaloa Cartel. Contreras, however, issued a shorter sentence, of which the nine months she has been in jail in the United States will be taken into account. Guzmán Loera's wife could be released in January 2024 or earlier if she shows good behavior.
Before hearing the court ruling, it was said that Coronel had reached an agreement to obtain a sentence reduction. The accusations were denied by the defense chaired by Jeffrey Lichtman and Mariel Colon. In fact, Lichtman tried to dismantle the rumors by saying that Coronel did not know anything about the operation of the Sinaloa Cartel.
The attention of the US justice system is now directed towards Los Chapitos and Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, who would be in charge of the Sinaloan criminal organization. In 2019, the government of that country filed charges against two sons of El Chapo; Joaquín and Ovidio, the latter of whom was captured and released by the authorities in October of that year.

Did you know they rather have you accept a plea deal than go to trial because they rather not waste time and money. most times you get a lesser sentence than what they first ask for. when you accept a plea depending on no priors, money, good behavior and lack of evidence they'll give you a good or decent deal. if she would have gone to trial and lost she would have gotten life or what they first asked. 4 years of probation is a bitch tho she can easily mess up and catch a violation

Any cooperation with the government is not going to result in any substantial action against the Sinaloa cartel!! That's just the US government grandstanding that they're tough on drugs!!
