Jorge Luis Camero Zazueta, nicknamed El Choche, was shot dead on Thursday in the Libertad neighborhood in Sonora.
The journalist worked at the El Informativo news portal and until two weeks ago he worked as the private secretary of Mayor Luis Fuentes Aguilar at the Empalme City Council.
After resigning from his position in the city council, he resumed his activities in the media and advertising company.
According to local media, the 28-year-old journalist received at least 3 bullet wounds. The State Prosecutor's Office reported that 8 9-millimeter shell casings were collected inside the gym where the murder was committed. The crime is still under investigation.
Although elements of the Red Cross arrived at the scene minutes later, they were unable to do anything to save Jorge Camero.
The news was taken up by Senator Emilio Álvarez Longoria, with information from the journalist Omar Bello Pineda. Via Twitter, the civil association Madres Buscadoras de Sonora denounced the violence against the press.
"There’s an unstoppable violence in Sonora and the country against journalists," said the group.
In 2022, there are already 6 homicides of journalists in Mexico. José Luis Gamboa, Margarito Martínez, Lourdes Maldonado, Roberto Toledo and Heber López were assassinated this year for their journalistic work.
