Death Toll in Juárez Massacre Rises to 16

El Paso Times

Ciudad Juarez, Chih - A 16-year-old boy has died, raising to 16 the death toll from Saturday's massacre at a birthday party in Juárez, Chihuahua state officials said Monday.

They identified the victim as Jose Luis Piña Davila, who died at a hospital from gunfire wounds. A dozen other people remain hospitalized with bullet wounds.

Juárez authorities said some of the dead were student athletes, including members of the Jaguares, an American football team at the school CBTIS 128.

On Saturday night, armed men descended from four vehicles and fired on a group of about 60 people who were at a party in the Salvarcar subdivision, authorities said.

Twenty-eight people were killed or injured in the attack. The youngest was a 13-year-old. Four other people remained in critical condition, officials said.

Officials announced a reward of about $76,000 dollars for information that leads to the arrest of the killers.

Ciudad Juarez, Chih - The mayor of a violent Mexican border city said Monday he fears a shooting that killed 16 people in a working class neighborhood may have been random because many of the victims were "good kids" with no apparent ties to drug gangs.

The dead included at least eight teenagers, the youngest a 13-year-old girl.

Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz said police were pursuing all lines of investigation. But he said none of the victims.
