Mexican Drug Lord Killed in Shootout

By Nick Valencia
CNN

The alleged leader of the Beltran Leyva drug trafficking organization was killed in a shootout with federal forces in northern Mexico, state media reported.

Pedro Roberto Velazquez Amador, alias "La Pina," was killed in a shootout Wednesday morning, hours after a military convoy patrolling the San Pedro area in Monterrey was attacked by gunmen.

Velazquez was killed in the subsequent shootout, state-run Notimex news agency reported.

Pictures from a local newspaper showed the body of a man believed to be in his 30s and said to be Velazquez, lying in a puddle of water with a firearm in his hand.

Velazquez is the alleged leader of the Beltran Leyva cartel in San Pedro, according to the National Defense Secretary of Mexico.

However, recent reports say the fractured Beltran Leyva cartel has been splintered into warring groups.

Mexican-American drug trafficker Edgar Valdez, known by his moniker "La Barbie" for his light complexion and blue eyes, is claiming leadership over the cartel.

The military says it seized three small arms, 30 rounds of ammunition, a laptop and two vehicles during the shootout.

In December 2009, the co-founder of the Beltran Leyva cartel Arturo Beltrán Leyva, was killed in a luxurious apartment community during a 90-minute shootout with the Mexican navy.

The Mayor of Cancun, Greg Sanchez, was detained by federal police Tuesday at the airport on suspicions of money laundering and allegedly helping protect the Beltran Leyva and Los Zetas cartel.

  1. Could this story have run without the blood and gore? Although this story is about a victory for the Mexican Government, Mexico is portrayed as a horrible place. This is not constructive to present facts with a photo hardly fit for a tabloid. This is not about sensibilities. After all, you warn readers that you post inappropriate shock photos. It is about making this blog constructive. The cartels want public fear.

  2. If we in Mexico can see this shit every day, the world should see it too, so they can see what we live every day. Quit living in denial, Borderland Beat is a good source because they don't sugar coat it. It is real and it is tragic, I can't believe some people still deny this is happening, but we who live this nightmare of fear, we knew the truth!

I laugh when people talk about reputation, in other words don’t show that "bad" the public fear is not in the blog, but on the streets from the people who live in the middle of it.

    Wake up!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Sooner or later it may occur to the potential criminal element in Mexico that the idea of glamor money --- has a real down side, let the criminals suffer fear, the entire country of Mexico has been held hostage -- I think every youn man in Mexico needs to see pictures just like "La Pina" maby they would think twice beforetaking the easy way-- anyone can be a criminal but in most functioning countrys the price can be high.

If you can't take the heat get the hell off this site.

  15. Bob, this was a fairly tame pic, in fact. At least bits and parts of him weren't in trees, like with another photo previously shown on this site.

In Colombia, the death squads, also with American government assistance, go around and cut people up with chain saws. Hurts the eyes some for sure.
