The Sinaloa Director of Public Security, Jorge Luis Murillo Espinosa, and three of his bodyguards were killed in an ambush Friday afternoon in Culiacan. A report from the State Attorney General(PGJE), indicated that the attack also wounded four innocent motorists and damaged at least 13 vehicles.
Apparently, the deadly attack was perpetrated by individuals using four wheelers, motorcycles and three white Jeep Cherokee. Witnesses also reported additional gunmen shooting from nearby rooftops.
The three state police officers killed while escorting Murillo Espinosa were identified as Erick Herrera Guzman, Adolfo Arámbulo Vega, Samuel Adrián Rodelo Landeros .
The attack occurred just three blocks from the State Government Palace, shortly before 15:00 pm on Lazaro Cardenas Street, between Mutualismo Street and Emiliano Zapata Boulevard.
Investigators reported 605 shell casings found at the scene which are currently being analyzed in attempts to establish how many weapons and gunmen were involved.
The official, who was attacked minutes after leaving his office, had taken the position only eight months prior to replace Rafael Gaxiola Peñuelas, who was gunned down in a failed assassination attempt on November 17, 2009.
