Alfredo Beltran Leyva "El Mochomo" captured January 20, 2008
Arturo Beltran Leyva "El Barbas" killed December 16, 2009
Jesus Zambada Garcia "El Rey" captured October 8, 2008
The Calderon administration scored a major propaganda victory on Thursday, July 29, during a military operation in the state of Jalisco when the drug trafficker Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel, a leader of the Sinaloa cartel and partner of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, was shot and killed in the Guadalajara suburb of Zapopan.
This is the latest of Calderon’s victories against major drug cartel figures since the beginning of his presidency in late 2006. Although his victories have been significant, violence and insecurity continue to escalate, especially in northern Mexico and the western states bordering the Pacific.
Experts predict a worsening of the violence as a consequence of “Nacho” Coronel’s death. A spike in violence and killings in the western states that resulted from the fragmentation of the Beltran Leyva Organization after Arturo Beltran Leyva’s death may gain even more momentum that could carry the mayhem into the nation’s capitol.
We should not even think of a corner being turned in this war until all the top leadership of the major cartels such as “El Chapo” Guzman, “El Mayo” Zambada, Hector Beltran Leyva, Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, “El Lazca” Lazcano Lazcano, “El Z-40”, “El Azul” Esparragoza, Antonio Cardenas Guillen, Fernando Arrellano, Edgar Valdez Villarreal, “El Mas Loco” Moreno Gonzales, “El Chango” Mendez Vargas and many powerful mid-level lieutenants have been killed or captured and their organizations fragmented and weakened.
The journey will be long and painful.
Other major drug cartel figures captured or killed during the Felipe Calderón administration
Just last December 2009, Arturo Beltran Leyva “El Barbas”, the leader of the Beltran Leyva cartel, was killed in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, during a military raid on an apartment serving as a hideout. At the time Calderon called it a crushing blow against one of the most dangerous criminal gangs in the Americas.
In the early months of 2009 there were two major blows to the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels with the arrests of two top lieutenants.
Vicente Carrillo Leyva, son of the late Amado Carrillo Fuentes “the lord of the skies” and founder of the Juarez cartel, was arrested on April 1, 2009, while exercising in a park in the Bosques de las Lomas, an exclusive residential area of Mexico City.
Carrillo Leyva had a leadership role in the Juarez cartel and was responsible for money laundering operations in that organization
Vicente Zambada Niebla, alias “El Vicentillo” and the son of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, one of the leaders of the Sinaloa cartel, was arrested with 5 bodyguards on March 18, 2009 in the upscale Jardines de Pedregal residentialarea of Mexico City.
Zambada Niebla was responsible for operations, logistics and security at a high level of the Sinaloa criminal organization. He was extradited to the U.S. and is jailed and awaiting trial in Chicago.
In October 2008 the federal government overthrew one of the old time "kings" of drug trafficking in Mexico. Jesus “El Rey” Zambada, brother of “El Mayo” and one of the leaders of the Sinaloa cartel, was arrested after a shootout in the Linda Vista area in Mexico City.
“El Rey” was acting as head of the Sinaloa cartel in the Valley of Mexico, and oversaw drug trafficking operations for the cartel in the International Airport of Mexico City.
The last of the original brothers that founded the Arellano Felix cartel, Eduardo Arellano “El Doctor”, was arrested by Federal Police and the Army troops in October 2008 in Tijuana.
“El Doctor” took over leadership of the cartel after the detention of his brother, Francisco Javier El Tigrillo. After “El Doctor’s” arrest his nephew Fernando Arellano took the reins of the organization.
In January 2008 the Mexican army arrested Alfredo Beltran Leyva “El Mochomo” in Culiacan, Sinaloa. “El Mochomo” along with his brother Arturo led the Beltran Leyva Organization.
Alfredo Beltran was in charge of transporting drugs through the Sonora-Arizona border, money laundering and recruitment of public officials in the states of Sinaloa, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Jalisco and Nayarit.

jesus zambada reyes was too young when he killed himself, he won't have to live in a suffering life anymore, imagine a picture of a person revealing secret drug details to the authorities when he knew his family was very angry with him, he also knew he would be killed if he left the building where protected witnesses live. el chapo or his uncle ismael zambada would send their hitmen to find jesus zambada reyes and kill the hell out of him, like they did to another protected witness edgar baycrod 'Tiger' who was killed in the starbuck coffee shop. i think, jzr was the one who led the authorities to arrest his cousin vicente zambada niebla. jzr probably hated his cousin.
