Sheriff Paul Babeu Responds to Border Mayors' Letter
To Give this letter some context, Sheriff Paul Babeu has in the past said that Sinaloa cartel operatives are operating in Arizona, and more recently, claimed that armed conflict with the cartels is inevitable. Several mayors in Arizona disagreed with this statement and Fox News reports:
"In the February 9, letter, first obtained by the Arizona Daily Star, mayors Arturo Garino of Nogales, Michael Gomez, of Douglas, and Juan Escamilla, of San Luis, the mayors warn that Babeu's comments are hurting business in their cities.
They ask Babeu to "not cultivate a culture of fear" in the Grand Canyon State that "may keep national media coming to Arizona" but, in reality, is hurting the economies of border cities"
Excerpt from that letter:
"As Mayors of border communities from Arizona, we would appreciate it if you would not cultivate a culture of fear in our state and to start being accurate about border security. While your misstatements about efforts to keep communities along the U.S.-Mexico border may keep national media coming to Arizona, at the same time your consistent inaccuracies hurt cities and towns like ours by causing those who live and travel to the border to fear for their safety when in our communities.
This damages our economy - driving visitors away and leaving our businesses and residents to suffer. The facts show that violent crime is down or remains flat in our border region as we are sure it is in your area as well. In 2002 it peaked at 742 per 100,000 residents but has since drastically dropped to 219 per 100,000 in 2009 (per the F.B.I. Uniform Crime Reports Program)."
So Sheriff John was unhappy about this and fired back:
Pinal County is the number one county in the United States for drug and human trafficking. Our pursuits and drug seizures tied to drug and human trafficking far exceed those of the four border counties. The threat from an unsecured border, where 241,000 illegals were apprehended last year by the border patrol and an additional 400,000 got away. Those are failing grades by anyone's score card.
Some speak of improved safety, while we have doubled the confiscation of drugs, calls to the Border Patrol and had 340 vehicle pursuits this year -- up from 286 the year before and 142 the year prior. We have a serious public safety threat in my county, due to an unsecured border with Mexico and our nation should be highly concerned about the more dangerous national security threat that is presented with OTM's and persons from countries of interest (that harbor/sponsor terrorist or speak ill of the USA).
Just this week, the US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Pinal County has a minimum of 75-100 mountains or high terrain features that are occupied by Mexican Drug Cartels. How have we arrived at this point in America that this is acceptable to have foreign born criminals controlling safe passage in an entire region of our state?
If these Mayors were serious about dialogue with me, they would have called, or at least waited for there letter to arrive by mail at my office, prior to releasing their letter to the media. They have done the very thing they accuse me of doing. I do not represent these Mayors or their citizens, yet I do represent the nearly 400,000 citizens of my county and the overwhelming majority of Arizonans, who laugh at Secretary Napolitano's suggestion that our border is more secure than ever.
It should also be noted that Sheriff Paul Babeu has come under political fire before, his deputy was was shot in the Arizona desert after a fight with an illegal alien. John Mccain publicly asked him to tone down the immigration rhetoric ahead of the 2008 elections. He has also been accused of appearing on a local radio show in which others around him made racially charged statements. In reference to U.S. immigration policy, Sheriff Paul has also made claims that our own government is our enemy.
Thanks for the links Buela!

Very Simple Sheriff, Man up and get to work.
ReplyDeleteQuit passing it off as someone elses problem and man up.
and when these loud mouth mexicans leave mexico running for safety, they will be glad the sherrif is there
ReplyDeleteIt was later discovered that his deputy's wound had been self-inflicted, yet the MSM stayed away from that part of the story.
ReplyDeleteThe U.S. and Mexican govt. Know who operate in this area and nothing happens in that area with out them knowing. Just take care of it. We want swift justice not red tape and politics.
ReplyDeleteWow sounded like he had facts and the mexican mayors had bullshit once again. Americans will never visit Mexico on the border region anymore. We have always consumed illegsal substance meixco supplied from prohibiton to cocaine- you guys started to cut peoples heads off not us. LOL a whole town of mayors writes a letter of that substance. Now wonder Mexico is in trouble. The drug dealers must be the mayors. Look at the sheriffs articulated response. Yall keep getting your heads chopped off why you blame us.
ReplyDeleteI want the same illigal imigration laws that mexico has installed in the United States. There does not seem to be the same level of political correctness in Mexico as there is in the U.S...infact, I would say there is none.
ReplyDeleteFinally I will say this; if there is a LIVE Mexican mayor or police chief in the border states, he is either a member of a cartel or at the very least supports the cartels in his area of influence....
Sounds like this Sheriff is in over his head and cant do anything but blow off
ReplyDeleteI will tell you what, this past New Years I was in a trailer park along the Colorado River and talked with several campers that stated they usually go to Rocky Point Mexico over the holidays however decided not this year because of the untamed drug dealers violance in Mexico.
ReplyDeleteI have a sister-in-law who has a house in south of Ensanada we go to every summer for two weeks. Surfice it to say we will not be going down there in the future until Mexico is safe again.
The writer is wrong, these are not Mexican Mayors, they are the Mayors of Douglas, Nogales and San Luis ARIZONA. This just goes to show that even US poloticos have thier heads buried in the sand. This is just like the movies Jaws, Sheriff Babeu is trying to warn people of the dangers while the towns Mayor wants to shut him so they tourists dont get scared away.
ReplyDeleteThese are not Mexican Mayors, they are the Mayors of Douglas, Nogales and San Luis ARIZONA
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of Mr. Babeu, but for all of the smartasses here pretending to know it all, why don't you accept the opportunity below to prove how you can do it so much better. I have my doubts.
ReplyDeletehttp://pinalcountyaz.gov/Departments/Sheriff/RecruitingInfo/Pages/DeputySheriff.aspx
I was reading an article yesterday that was discussing our northern border with Canada. Over 4000 miles of border and only 32 miles are fenced. Food for thought. Another story I saw mentioned that only 3% of all containers coming in via ship are inspected?
ReplyDeletePinal County Tourism! Let's go!
ReplyDeletehttp://pinalcountyaz.gov/Visitors/Documents/Pinal%20County%20Tourist%20Map.pdf
'Just this week, the US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Pinal County has a minimum of 75-100 mountains or high terrain features that are occupied by Mexican Drug Cartels.'
Then maybe the Chamber of Commerce should rewrite their online tourist map? Make it look much more dangerous than it appears now... and take out the golf course sites from the map.
I know that I won't be going to Tombstone, Arizona to visit this year because Mexican Drug Cartels are now running the show there, too...lol... And Sheriff Arpai is working way over in the Phoenix area and can't put them into pink underwear so that we Americans may all stay safe.
10:03 and others.
ReplyDeleteOversight on my part, thanks for the correction.

ReplyDeleteClarification:
FLORENCE, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) – An apology from Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu today. While he’s not exactly a border sheriff, Babeu is getting a lot of air time on the border issue. He’s one of the strongest advocates for SB1070, as well as a fence. And, these days it seems like he’s all over CNN and Fox News.
But it’s his recent appearance on a talk radio show that has Sheriff Babeu saying he’s sorry. Babeu now says he regrets appearing on the radio show, The Political Cesspool, because he says he rejects bigotry.
Babeu claims he was "hoodwinked" into an interview after a show co-host portrayed the program as a legitimate media organization.
The Political Cesspool airs weekly on WLRM 1380AM radio in Millington, Tennessee. During its July 10th show, co-host Eddie Miller lined up Sheriff Babeu to appear as the program’s guest.
Minutes before the interview Miller said this: "I would say the only people that came close to getting me this excited would be doctor David Duke."
Duke is a former Ku Klux Klan leader. Minutes later, Babeu then called into the show, "Hey Eddie, its Paul Babue, how are you doing my friend?" Babeu asked.
@chuckG, so you’re saying lying about illegals and waisting your tax dollars to go on a racist show is "doing his job"? wow!
http://www.kgun9.com/global/story.asp?s=12842962
So he didn't say it, but he was on some controversial show that made racial statements, I got that mixed-up... trying to piece this thing together out of a bunch of articles... When you stand back and look at the stories put together, it gives it a better context IMO.
Even though this mayor's are from U.S. cities, I'm sure they're getting some kind of kickbacks from any one of the mex drug cartels operating in that area, plain and simple !!!
ReplyDeleteAs far as his deputies shooting... this is strange:
ReplyDeleteThe shooting came amid growing national debate over Arizona's tough immigration law, and it raised questions about whether Puroll had staged the incident to publicize drug and human smuggling.
Sheriff Paul Babeu closed the investigation and pronounced Puroll's version of events accurate in October.
Puroll then gave a series of interviews with the Phoenix New Times, and reportedly told the reporter he had been approached by members of a Mexican drug cartel several times over the years and they had offered to "make it worth my while to look the other way out in the desert if I bumped into them."
The story also quoted him as saying that he didn't arrest the men, call for backup or report the alleged encounters, among other comments.
Babeu suspended Puroll after the story appeared, and launched an internal review of his actions. He formally terminated Puroll after being presented with the probe's findings.

So basically, he has the bad habit of being around all the wrong people when they get caught doing something or saying something.
Sheriff Paul prob means well. He just gets caught up because he's always in front of a camera.
@Smurf

So in other words he didn't arrest the men even tho he knew they were breaking the law by trying to bride the sheriff, so in other words he took the brides..freakin corrupt mofo!!
"So basically, he has the bad habit of being around all the wrong people when they get caught doing something or saying something."
No smurf open your eyes!! He is the bad guy!!
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu is anticipating an armed conflict between his deputies and cartel members within the next 30 to 60 days.

I've read BB everyday, but seldom comment. However, the negative comments posted regarding Sheriff Babeu tells me those posting know nothing about the man and are just talking crap. He is a very honorable, honest, intelligent man, served in our military, and doesn't usually put up with the politicians who try to paint a safe picture re the Mexico/AZ situation. He is about as NON PC as Sheriff Joe, but does it in a "not so gruff" manner". Learn more, and please contribute if you can. http://www.bordersheriffs.com/our-sheriffs/ He is a patriot, so stop trashing an honorable man trying to do the right thing!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFor those that read BB, I would encourage you to look at the links, and sponsor websites. Sheriff Babeu stated a few weeks ago, that the cartels have declared war on US law enforcement and he proceeded to purchased high powered weapons for his deputies. Check out Border Narcotics Intelligence (sponsor link on BB) website article posted today which confirms his statement: http://usbordernarcoticsintelligence.wordpress.com/2011/02/17/mexican-drug-cartels-declare-war-on-u-s-agents/
No, I think that this The Cartels are Coming stuff is largely just a way of trying to panic the Anglos about Latino undocumented folk. And YES, it is quite racist in nature.
ReplyDeleteThe real deal is that the US government is intervening all over INSIDE Mexico, much more so than all this The Cartels are Here, Oh My God crap of Arizona racists! I mean the Chamber of Commerce of this county where Baby Babeu presides over (as he looks for more funding for his deputies) is still quite busy trying to get Anglo golfers to come and play under the sunny skies... Not exactly what I would call a panic situation for the I Hate Illegals crowd.
I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. He can't answer for EVER SINGLE one officers... to do so would require omni-presence.
ReplyDelete@ 10:29
ReplyDeleteThe Northern border will become a huge problem. They have been finding tunnels there for 5 years but greatly understaffed so lord knows how many exist. You are correct 4000 miles pretty much un supervised and part of that is indian land that borders up to US, cartels have partnershiped in useage of indian land..off limits to authorities. for now, NY and Michigan have activity and wa state, look for wa to be big for narcos, who BTW have established themselves nicely there. wa perfect with pacific ocean and canada borders.
it is said our No border is a bigger threat than So border for terrorists to access american soil.
Buela, you're a freaking paranoid. You must be a DEA cop. Tunnels on the CDN border, when you have hundred of miles of frozen lakes to cross. Pathetic.
ReplyDelete@ dickhead sheriff. "We have a serious public safety threat in my county, due to an unsecured border with Mexico and our nation should be highly concerned about the more dangerous national security threat that is presented with OTM's and persons from countries of interest (that harbor/sponsor terrorist or speak ill of the USA)."
ReplyDeleteWow, you must be rich to own "your county"...
" If these Mayors were serious about dialogue with me, they would have called, or at least waited for there letter to arrive by mail at my office, prior to releasing their letter to the media.."
It is spelled their dumbass. Spellcheck not working for you THERE cueball?
"They have done the very thing they accuse me of doing. I do not represent these Mayors or their citizens, yet I do represent the nearly 400,000 citizens of my county and the overwhelming majority of Arizonans, who laugh at Secretary Napolitano's suggestion that our border is more secure than ever."
You represent the county who elected you, not Arizonians in general. You are not more powerful than the federal government. You are a cop and MUST follow the orders of the DA who CAN remove you. You are elected but WAY down the totem pole my friend.
I think Cueball is trying to make a run for the empty Senate seat coming up.
This guy is an idiot trying to work his way to Washington. Fuck him
ReplyDeleteTo "Ernest" wow you are one stupid ignorant asshole, always pulling the race card to justify everything, look in the mirror asshole and you'll see a racist
ReplyDeleteI agree, 10:26. ernie, alot of people are starting to see you for what you are.!!! your smart with the one hand, and the left has alot of shit in it. ernie? Do you hate everyboody?? or just small little roses that don't that wilt and die???
ReplyDeleteI am far, far from being the only citizen seeing the hysteria against the undocumented as being largely race based in the motivations of so many of my fellow Anglos. So growl at me all you want about it. Big Deal. You people are simply way way less than honest.
ReplyDelete"@ dickhead sheriff, commentor"
ReplyDeleteYou are obviously not to bright (intelligent)...Did you think, what is printed on this blog is the actual letter?" Come on guy, use some common sense..the one typo/grammatical error you found "there"..could have very well came from the individual, who supplied the letter content to the media or blog source.
Second, the "DA" (I assume you mean District Attorney) does not have the power to remove the elected county Sheriff from office. You have no idea what you are talking about. As a matter of fact, the Sheriff, is the chief law enforcement official in the county. The DA handles the prosecution of criminal cases.
Third, Sheriff Babeu would be the person, "In the know," with regards to what's happening in the county, he is in charge of (law enforcement wise)...and if he is such a racist, how did he get elected...obviously by "like minded" citizens.
Bottom line, if you don't live in Arizona, don't assume you know what's going on there...
What"s happening in Mexico, U.S., or anywhere for that matter, is people are people. When suvival comes in play, and a person is backed againist the wall, people will do what it takes to survive, for themselves.!!! In one hand, you can't blame the illegals for coming to the states, but in another, where the fairness when they take advantage (ABUSE) of system here, and use it for personal gain.!! It's like watching someone do something stupid, and we say, 'i would never do that' and then one day 'we are _living_ the same shoes that we said once we would never do'.!! Given and put in similiar positions, alot times we don't know what we are going to do, even if WE THINK WE DO>!!!
ReplyDeleteHeck if you do perhaps live in Arizona, I won't assume you know what's going on there either... lol...
ReplyDelete'Bottom line, if you don't live in Arizona, don't assume you know what's going on there...'
How's that for fair, Anonymous?
@Ernest1
ReplyDeleteFair? Easy..I would find the Sheriff to be more credible with regards to what's going on in his jurisdiction than others, who do not..
I noticed you like portray "Anglo" Americans, as racist..but again, you are missing the point..the office of Sheriff, is an elected position, how can you explain his success in being elected? Labeling or calling someone a "racist" is a cope out..an excuse..you need to come up with a better argument based on facts not stereo-typical assumptions..
Even though the guy is an idiot, he is right. The elected DA of any county is the head of all law enforcement. There are some places in the US where the county coroner can remove the sheriff as well. It is no different than the USAG being the boss of the FBI. It is a pyramid. The county sheriff is not the boss of a county. They do not have prosecutorial protection under the law that the DA has. They can be charged for civil rights violations and go to jail. The DA's are almost impossible to touch unless they are stealing money. Even intentionally prosecuting an innocent person has no penalty to them. Study up on your political science guy.
ReplyDeleteIn Arizona, a sheriff is an elected official and the chief law enforcement officer in any given county. There exists one sheriff for each of Arizona's 15 counties, with a ...
