The Associated Press

BROWNSVILLE — A 26-year-old Cameron County prosecutor has been found dead in Mexico.

Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos says the circumstances of the death of Assistant DA Arturo Jose Iniguez of Rancho Viejo are under investigation. A statement Sunday from the district attorney says the body was found in Matamoros, across the border from Brownsville.

Villalobos says the weekend death "is considered an open and ongoing investigation."

The district attorney's office did not immediately provide more details Monday to The Associated Press.
Iniguez joined the DA's office in 2007. He is survived by his wife and 2-year-old daughter.

The mother of a 26-year-old Cameron County prosecutor says her son has been killed in a car accident in Mexico.

Cameron County Assistant District Attorney Arturo Jose Iniguez’s death in Matamoros during the weekend continues under investigation.

"The information we have at this point is that no weapon was used," District Attorney Armando R. Villalobos said in a written statement to the Brownsville Herald, addressing unconfirmed reports that the death might have been a suicide.

"We are still not ready to call it a suicide," Villalobos said.

"Iniguez’s death is considered an open and on-going investigation, which our office is reviewing," Villalobos said earlier.

Maria Elena Alvarez de Lugo, the mother of Iniguez, on Monday told The Associated Press that her son died in a weekend car crash. She declined to give any further information

Iniguez, 26, of Rancho Viejo, had been promoted earlier this month to first chair misdemeanor attorney. He first joined the district attorney’s office in 2007 as a law clerk, while attending law school.

Iniguez is survived by his wife Lorena Garza Iniguez and 2-year-old daughter Camila. Villalobos said that funeral arrangements are pending.

Iniguez received his Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Finance from The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, graduating Cum Laude in 2006. He was on the Dean’s List and both a member of the South Texas Pre-Law Society and Alpha Chi National College Scholarship Honor Society.

He was a graduate of the University of Houston Law Center in December 2009 where he was a member of the student bar association and the Hispanic Law Students Association.

Regarding travel to Mexico in the midst of increasing violence in the neighboring country from warring drug cartels, Villalobos said that the office does not have a formal policy on travel to Mexico.

"We advise our employees not to make it known that they are employed by the DA’s Office if they do travel to Mexico. We additionally discourage travel into Mexico; however, many of our employees have family in Mexico, so a complete ban of travel into Mexico is impracticable," Villalobos said.

  2. That's really bizarre. A dog drug? Like ketamine or something? Or was he poisoned? Suicide? This is a very strange story.

  5. The Matamoros newsapaper El Bravo posted some pictures in today´s edition, they showed the man in his Jeep Patriot with a bottle of poison at his side, his glasses where still on his face. His vehicle showed no damage and all his possesions where intack, looked like a suicide to me. No sign of struggle or theft.

From what I have read, there was no accident. The jeep patriot was found 300 meters from the international bridge with the engine running.

No signs of struggle nor injuries. Authorities say his body was laying on top of a bottle of animal sedatives and that they are waiting for lab reports.

At this time, it has not been made official, but they believe the cause of death is "suicide by the ingestion of poison".

  8. "The initial hypothesis regarding the official’s death is that it might be a case of suicide, since beside the body was found the lid of a container for an animal sedative and the bottle was found outside the vehicle."

  11. Obviouly Maria Elena Alvarez de Lugo despite having too long a name, thinks we are all stupid.. A car accident is ridiculous.. Just because she is not very smart, she doesn't have to assume everyone else is.
