With at least 22 shots the director of Public Safety in this town was executed when he was aboard a marked truck returning from “Centro de Protección Ciudadana” in the city of La Piedad, where he has participated in a meeting. His fellow officer and driver was seriously injured.
The attack that killed the police chief José Gómez Basurto, 55 years old, and injured his driver police officer José Luis Amezcua Castillo, 35, happened at the edge kilometer 22 +120, the road section near station Paty-Vista Hermosa, near Yurécuaro.
It was learned that shortly before 1200 hours on Tuesday, José Gómez Basurto was traveling as passenger in the patrol vehicle with the number 01307 that was driven by officer Amezcua Castillo.
Half a mile before reaching Yurécuaro, they were intercepted by an armed commando traveling in a van, which descriptions are unknown, and were fired by a hail of bullets from heavily armed men armed with AR-15 and AK-47 assault rifles where the assailants fired at least 20 times without giving any opportunity for the victims to defend themselves. The chief was declared dead at the scene while his driver sustained a gunshot non life threatening wound to the leg.
After that attack the heavily armed commando fled the scene, and after a search by a heavy presence from various police and military agencies, they were unable to locate the sicarios.
Three executive police directors have been killed in 2010 in the region. On January 28 Antonio Bravo Ramírez and two of his bodyguards were executed in Quiroga, on April 16 Rafael Muñoz Rojas and one of his officers was executed and in July 30 César Negrón García was killed in Benito Juárez.
During 2010, a total of 52 chiefs of police have lost their lives in various parts of Mexico from local, state and federal, agnecies to include the military.
