Mexican drug link probed in ambush murder of Texas lawman

Reuters

The death of a Bexar County sheriff's sergeant who died in a hail of gunfire as he sat in his patrol car is being investigated for a possible connection to Mexico's drug cartels, county officials said on Tuesday.

Sergeant Kenneth Vann was "targeted because he represented the government," Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz told Reuters.

Vann, 48, was in uniform, sitting in his marked patrol car at a corner on San Antonio's southeast side early Saturday when a small white car pulled up beside him, and somebody in the car fired an estimated 28 shots from an automatic weapon, possibly an AK-47 rifle, Ortiz said. No suspects are in custody.

"I think that they picked on a police officer because he was a symbol of authority," Ortiz said on Tuesday.

He said there is no evidence Vann's movements had been tracked that morning, indicating the 24-year law enforcement veteran was not likely targeted personally. Ortiz called it an attack "on a random law enforcement officer."

"The general public, I don't think, should have that much to fear," Ortiz said.

He said the FBI, along with the Texas Department of Public Safety and other law enforcement agencies are helping with the investigation.

Deputy Lou Antou said investigators are sorting through surveillance videos from two gas stations at the corner where the shooting took place.

  2. Here We GO this sounds like a classic Narco/Gang M O,very sad about this officer and his family. Let what happens next be an example for Legitimate Mexican Law Enforcement, I suspect that a intense man hunt is in progress, killing a Texas Lawman is a big deal. This is a good example of why Texas has and uses the death penalty. If this turns out to be a Mex Narco deal let this serve notice on our Democratic Fed that Mexicos problem is a TEXAS/USA problem, not that it will help, get them off their re-elect Obama ass.

An attack on a single law officer in America is a direct attack on all of our boys and girls in law enforcement.
That was one sorry chicken shit asshole to murder a cop. This was a man who would protect your family with his life without even known your name.
I hope that his buddies kick the living shit out of the punk who did this and spit in his food every single day. Prison will be hell until they shove that long cold needle into his arms and kill that worthless piece of shit!!!

The above comment embodies the ignorance and racism of some of the folks posting here: Why do you immediately assume the killer is from Mexico ? Let's just say that he or they are indeed from Mexico... Does that mean all Mexicans are murdereres ? What about Mexican- Americans ?

  11. @anonymous 843: you're an idiot. I'm a police officer in central Texas. You're what's wrong with this country. You can hide behind an anonymous tag on a message board and talk your shit about a murdered police officer..but if your sorry ass was on the line, who you gonna call? Won't be ghostbusters. Instead of talkin about a dead man,why don't you try and do his job? Why don't you strap on a vest and gun, kiss you're family goodbye, not knowing if you will ever see them again, and go to work. every day. We make that sacrifice so worthless ecumenical of the earth can safely sit in there homes and talk shit about a dead man. There's a special place in hell for people like you.

  13. Sad that the Sheriff of Bexar County uses this to push the agenda that the violence is "coming north".

Worthless bastard should be trying to solve the killing instead of getting political face time as his buddy Sheriff "Sigi" did with the Tiffany Hartley fiasco in Zapata County

  14. First a few facts:

The area where this Sergeant was killed is about 95% African American, high crime and has an extensive gang problem.

The leads they have so far involve as yet unknown black males.

San Antonio is NOT any form of “sanctuary city”. This is unsupported RW bullcrap.

Every officer, deputy, constable etc. that puts on a uniform is a target and is at risk from any turd looking to make a name for himself. Its happened before here with another Deputy many years ago and they have yet to find his killer to this day.

This killing has *nothing* to do with cartels or any issues going on in Mexico.

  17. It may have been an African American area, but if the weapon used (and a big IF) was an automatic AK47, then you can look to the cartels. Those are the guys with the automatic AK's, and you don't buy these in just any gunshop. In fact, because the AK's from the U.S. are made from assembled parts, it's almost impossible to make a semi-auto AK fully automatic again without a master gunsmith and a machine shop.

  18. @trip1735

as for me ..i want to say there are millions of well armed law abiding gun owners in this country who are standing behind you...

yes... this is not Mexico ..and i don't mean that way in a bad way ..other than that Mexico is in a shambles ..where there is no trust between the police and the people who they are charged to protect..

yes we have a few bad apples ..but for the most part there is well deserved trust between cops and citizens

as long as this exists...we can win against any narcos

  19. @May 31, 2011-8:30AM,

Your a moron, the drug war in Mexico has been going on for years, if the violence was going to "spill over," into the U.S. it would have happened a long time ago. Right now, I have no doubt this has already occurred on a small scale but if you think, what's happening in Mexico is going to take place in the U.S., you truly are stupid! Your talking two very different governing styles. The level of corruption in the U.S. is far less then in Mexico (in law enforcement). Plus, who is to say this tragedy has anything to do with the drug cartel violence, in Mexico. The difference is murders in the U.S. (especially one's involving police officers) have a greater chance of getting solved then one's committed in Mexico.

  20. Mr. 5:20-

It's actually pretty easy to convert an AK to full auto. The requirements are a full auto trigger group, a third pin and a fixture that shows where the hole for the third pin is located. No master gunsmith or machine shop required.

You dumb fuck, you parents were just like them. Its sad to see ppl like you. My parents came over and got diported many times. Got there asses beat by BP. Now my Father is an Exec at a F500 Company. What has your family done for this country? Other than bring up a POS child that talks down to his own ppl. Yes I was born here but I still go back to my roots. I had/still have a very privileged life. But yet I still go down to where my parents are from. No way in hell will I ever let go of my roots. Not everyone that boarder jumps is bad. For you to say they feel privileged you are all wrong. I bet you also say that Mexican IA's feed off of the system. Wrong! I work for USDOL and travel all over the counrty training ppl on how to get back on there feet. I teach everything from Interviewing skills to how to look for a job. From New Mexico to New York to Washington you would be amazed on how many NON Mexicans feel they are privileged and frown upon a min wage job when there is no other job available. But yet ppl complain that Mexicans legal or not are taking our jobs. How about you take the job thats available instead of waiting for that better paying job that everyone else is going to apply for. SO how dare you put down your own ppl when you your family was once on the same boat. PS GO FUCK YOUR SELF!

VIVA MEXICO Y VIVA LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS
YES IM A PROUD MEXICAN AMERICAN!

Sorry to take from this sad story, may god bless him and his family and help bring whom ever did this to justice!

You DOUCHE, How stupid of you to think that ONLY MExicans use AK47's! First of all its not hard to convert an Ak to full auto. There is the right way making it ATF Legal and FULL AUTO which will have the ATF on your ass in a heart beat. and like 9:41 said thats oretty much all you need! Go check out the gangs Black, Mexican, Asain, White, whatever race they maybe. The choice gun is always an AK just because you can run thousands of rounds toss it in the closet for a year then come back and run another thousand rounds with out ever cleaning it!

Stop al the BS about Mexicans who came to U.S, and Mexican Americans who were born here. Here I give you some good examples of good people.

Robert Cardenas is a retired Brigadier General of the United States Air Force. He was born in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico.

Alfred A. Valenzuela is a retired United States Army major general. He frequently discusses how he overcame his childhood as a gang member.

Richard Edward Cavazos Mexican American four-star general.

Colonel Louis Gonzaga Mendez. Mexican American.

Ricardo Sanchez is a retired United States Army Lieutenant General and a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for the Senate election in 2012.

He wiu\ll get caught. You can bet your ass on that. The F.B.I and others are on this and they WILL get thier man. Guaranteed!!! 100%. This motherf###er is going to prison and hopefully to hell by the death needle.
We don't tolerate crap like that, just because they do in Mexico!!!

  34. They caught the person suspected for the murder of the officer. Name if the suspect is MarK Anthony Gonzales.

    ReplyDelete
  35. And what Mexican drug cartel is this Mark Anthony Gonzales a member?

    ReplyDelete
  36. That's what they do in Mexico, the sicarios just drive up beside their target and then open up on them with a high caliber weapon, sometimes full auto or even hand grenades! The victim, police or a rival usually doesn't have a chance! However the difference here is that our law enforcement officials haven't come under the corruption that you see in Mexico so there will be a serious manhunt for whoever killed this police officer! If and when they catch this asshole he will get the death penalty for his trouble! My condolences to the family of the police officer.
