Sinaloa Cartel and Zetas are said to be Behind Battle in Nayarit

The powerful Sinaloa drug cartel and upstart rival Los Zetas were involved in the gun battle than left 29 dead in the western Mexican state of Nayarit, the state Attorney General’s Office said Friday.

“First off, we understand it was a clash between gangs linked to the Sinaloa cartel and the so-called Zetas,” Nayarit Attorney General Oscar Herrera Lopez told a press conference.

Wednesday’s clash, one of the deadliest in recent years in Mexico, took place along Federal Highway 15 on the outskirts of the rural town of Ruiz, which is home to roughly 20,000 people.

The photographs taken at the scene show bodies of people wearing the fatigues, bullet-proof vests, cartridge belts, helmets and boots typical of a military commando.

Authorities found 28 men dead and four others wounded, as well as high-caliber weapons and 14 vehicles – mostly SUVs, two of them armored – at the scene.

One of the wounded men died later at a hospital.

Herrera said all of those slain were from Mexico’s Gulf coast, the main bastion of the Zetas, a group founded by deserters from an elite Mexican special forces unit.

Most of the victims were wearing identical uniforms, suggesting that a convoy of Zetas was ambushed by Sinaloa cartel gunmen, the Nayarit AG’s office said.

Herrera also said a Guatemalan man died and another “is receiving medical care in the hospital.”

Mexican authorities have previously detected Guatemalans – including veterans of the Guatemalan army’s Kaibiles commando unit – in the ranks of the Zetas, which have increased their presence in Guatemala in recent years.

Army soldiers confiscated six rifles, a handgun, two hand grenades, 96 ammunition clips, 2,422 rounds of ammunition of different calibers, 14 vehicles of different models, 16 bullet-proof vests, eight cartridge belts, three Kevlar-style helmets, 27 camouflage uniforms, 23 pairs of military boots and other gear.

Approximately 1,000 bullet casings and some undetonated grenades were discovered at the scene.

Authorities in Mexico have come under criticism for the ease with which large convoys of SUVs carrying criminals are able to circulate on the country’s highways.

Nayarit is regarded as the territory of the Sinaloa cartel, which is led by Mexico’s most-wanted fugitive, Joaquin “El Chapo” (Shorty) Guzman, and is trying to fight off other criminal gangs seeking to infringe on its areas of influence.

That state also is home to a popular tourist zone known as the Riviera Nayarit, which contains dozens of hotels and luxury residences.

Drug-related violence in Mexico has left nearly 40,000 dead since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon took office and militarized the struggle against the country’s heavily armed, well-funded cartels.

  2. Yes, a bloody gun battle that terrifies communities and the citizens, and showcases the how helpless they are to the narcos, is exactly what the people want. What is wrong with some of you? Think all people want to see is dead narcos.

Anyway, so initial reports were that Sinaloa were the ones ambushed, but this is saying the opposite, which one is it? Also, Beltran Leyva's were mentioned, and this has the same look as the similar ambush in Sonora last year.

  6. I am glad all these narcos are dead. Thats what they deserve for killing all those innocent people in the past.

  7. The dead are chapos, not Zetas, regardless of what the article implies. Their propaganda squad was out in full force the time they were ambushed in Sonora too, people were saying the dead were Zetas, but all the trucks being marked with X's (for antrax), combined with the fact that there are no Zetas in Sonora kind of screwed it up for them. Seems like they've smartened up, this time they have plausible deniability, no markings on the trucks, and they can weigh on police spokespeople to give the media their version of events.

But let's face it, it's not like the chapos don't wear camo or recruit guatemalans, and I don't see any Z's on any of these trucks, Zetas in convoy usually mark their vehicles, look at pictures from other gunfights. There are also no Zeta insignias on any of their uniforms. Ruiz doesn't belong to Chapo either, these people are chapos that tried to enter the plaza. As for who killed them, B.L in coordination with Zetas seems plausible, either way it's one of those two organizations that are behind it.

  10. I don't give a shit if the dead rats are Chapos or Zetas, they are all useless, lazy ass human beings that would rather poison their fellow citizens than help out their country and make it a better place.28 less "people???" breathing my air. There is no need for a funeral and "banda" at their funerals, put them all in a grave

  11. @Bones,

Wow, we have a "Narco Chapo-groupie" here.."Hope the dead arent Chapos ppl." I hate to break it to you..they were 'Chapos!' The Zetas always make an effort to collect their dead, when possible..plus the Zetas have no problem wearing insignia signifying they are 'Zetas.' Bottom line..it doesnt matter which factions were engaged in the battle..it's civil war in Mexico and you (Bones) appear to be 'what's wrong with Mexico!' Favoring one drug cartel over another without recognizing the fact all drug cartels are destroying Mexico is ignorant. You can cheerlead on the sidelines for the 'Chapos' but I guarantee you, if you were ever in their disfavor they would take your head just as fast as the Zetas!

Yes, Im a chapo fan. I follow this website cuz it interests me. Of all the cartels, I like sinaloa the best. And I do believe El Chapo must be an incredibly brilliant & ruthless business man, and I enjoy reading about his exploits. Do I want innocent people to die? Hell no. But as long as its going on I'm going to entertain myself by reading about it. I find all the goings on in Mexico to be very intersting. And yes, a part of me thinks El Chapo and a lot of other big names are complete bad asses. So go ahead and call me a Chapo groupie it doesnt bother me. Ur probly right, I am. I just read "The Last Narco" and loved it. So what

  14. BTW i dont live in mexico and i dont purchase drugs sooo unless you want me to pick up an AK-47 or open up a rehab clinic, I dont know what I can do to help. In fact, fuck it, its not my job to help. Altho I wish Mexico the best I'm not going to waste any time crying about the situation down there. Ive got my own bills to pay

  15. Bones...quite simply, you are a disgrace! To glorify the violence or praise ANY narcos shows your ghetto attitudes.

You haven't got a clue what real life is like if you do anything but be disgusted by the cartel activities. No sane human being would support such criminality.

Like gangsta behavior, glorifying such activity promotes it. It isn't ok, and decent people must take a stand against such heinous activities.

You can help by being part of the solution. Praising narcos and their activities only strengthens them.

"r.i.p el chapo's men may god bless"

dude are you serious? because they were Chapo's men you wish them blessings?!?? The Sinaloa cartel are ruthless scum also but the Zeta's just happen to be even more scum out of the 2 the Sinaloa Cartel is the less of the evils but at the end of the day all the cartels are still trash and El Chapo would kill you and me and anyone else in a heartbeat.

I guess it would be better to hear of 28 dead Zeta's than 28 dead Sinaloa cartel members but what the hell I mean if they just killed 28 Zeta's AND 28 Sinaloa Cartel guys it would be better for EVERYONE!!

I dont agree at all that me praising sinaloa on the BB message board in any way strengthens the cartels. In fact the only way that I'm affecting it at all is if someone reads my particular post, and decides because of what I wrote that they are going to go work for the cartels. The whole notion is just ridiculous. Your the psycho for thinking i'm strengthening the cartels. I think El Chapo is a bad ass and I admit it. I hope he beats all the other cartels. I hope he controls the drug trade. And i hope he lives forever. How do you like them apples.

  24. WHY DOES THE VIDEO SAY "EMBOSCADA DE ZETAS Y BLO AL GENTE DE CHAPO". ARE THE 28 DEAD, FROM THE CDS? THAT STYLE OF UNIFORM IS SIMILAR TO THE TYPE THAT CHAPOS PEOPLE USE IN NAYARIT. NOT SAYING THAT ZETAS DONT USE IT, ZETAS MAINLY USE GREEN UNIFORMS LIKE THAT TOO. THE CARS ARE DIFFERENT THOUGH, MAINLY TRUCKS AND SUVS. ZETAS USUALLY HAVE CARS LIKE THE CHEVY COBALT IN THEIR CONVOY. WHO KNOWS THOUGH???

Los Zetas fueron emboscados por sicarios del cártel de Sinaloa
Viernes, 27 Mayo 2011 Posted by Administrator Category Principal

EFE jd/pmc/vv
