Federal Police Capture Zeta Leader of Quintana Roo

Mexican Federal Police officers captured the suspected leader of the Los Zetas drug cartel in the southeastern state of Quintana Roo, federal authorities said Saturday.

Thursday's arrest of 30 year old Victor Manuel Perez Izquierdo, alias "El Siete Latas",in the resort city of Cancun stemmed from investigations carried out following the capture of 10 Zetas members on May 28 in that Caribbean state, the Public Safety Secretariat said in a statement.

The suspect came upon a Federal Police checkpoint set up at the intersection of Cancun-Kantunil and Chichen Itza Avenues; when the officers motioned for the car to stop, the "visibly armed" suspect tried to speed away, the secretariat said.

The officers pursued Perez Izquierdo and captured him several blocks away in the possession of an AR-15 assault rifle, an ammunition clip, 21 rounds of ammunition, 100 packages containing cocaine and 32 with marijuana, 7 cellular phones, a scale and a bill-counting machine.

Authorities accuse Perez Izquierdo of planning kidnappings and murders of innocent civilians and members of rival drug gangs, "as well as coordinating drug sales and extortion" activities.

The suspect was taken to Mexico City and turned over to the federal Attorney General's Office's Siedo organized-crime unit.

  4. I can't believe Mexico doesn't have a death penalty....what is the deterrent...they go to jail and with their connections can have anything in jail they wish, including sex with girlfriends....it's time for the death penalty...Mexico needs a strong deterrent for these soul-less sicarios.

  5. I cant be but amazed by people calling for death penalty. I hardly trust our courts let alone the Mexican ones.

It is pretty suprising that these cell leaders travel with drugs on them, granted he will probably be a free man quite soon but you would think that these 'more important' cartel member would not carry anything incriminating with them.

  8. I agree that Mexico should have a death penalty. It would deter cartels from doing as much killing. Plus, no murderer should ever have the right to live, under any circumstances.

  12. Lolol u think a death penalty would deter cartels from doing as much killing?? Never heard anything so ridiculous. They don't care. 99% of these sicarios are going to die on the job anyway. Nobody who murders for a living is going to think twice about the death penalty

  15. Death penalty similar to U.S. Would be a useful tool in Mexico's arsenal. Immediate action will have to do for now. Suspect shot trying to escape, oh, well!
