A federal prosecutor was killed Wednesday at his home in the northern Mexican city of Torreon, the Coahuila state Attorney General’s Office said.
Victor Manuel Martinez Cortes was shot at 8:30 a.m. while sitting in his car outside the family’s residence in Torreon’s Roma neighborhood.
The assailants were armed with AK-47 assault rifles, the state AG’s office said.
Torreon has experienced rising violence in recent months amid an intensifying turf war between the Sinaloa and Los Zetas drug cartels.
On Tuesday, three men set a car on fire outside the offices of El Siglo de Torreon newspaper and fired shots at the building. No one was injured.
That incident brings to 10 the number of attacks on media targets in Coahuila since 2009, a independent watchdog group said Wednesday in paid ads in regional newspapers.
Mexico’s independent National Human Rights Commission says 75 reporters have been killed in the country over the last 11 years.
Most of the violence against journalists is thought to come from Mexico’s powerful drug cartels and corrupt or abusive public officials.
Conflicts pitting the drug cartels against each other and the security forces have claimed nearly 50,000 lives in Mexico since December 2006.
