Juárez Reports 38% Fewer Homicides in 2011

By Diana Washington Valdez
El Paso Times
Juárez reported 38 percent fewer homicides in 2011 than in 2010, according to Chihuahua state statistics.

The city ended another year of drug cartel wars with 1,904 homicides in 2011, from Jan. 1 through Dec. 23, compared to 3,117 in 2010.

Juárez had 2,643 homicides in 2009 and 1,607 homicides in 2008.

Police reported the first homicide of the year Sunday with the death of a 60-year-old man who was struck by a vehicle, based on a preliminary investigation.

He was identified as Ezequiel Carvajal Zavala, whose body was found near the intersection of Las Maravillas and Piramide.

Officials said a bullet casing was found nearby, but they didn't know yet if the man was also shot.

Nationally, Mexico had 51,918 homicides since President Felipe Calderon announced a crackdown against the drug cartels.

Over the past four years, rival drug cartels led by Vicente "Viceroy" Carrillo Fuentes and Joaquin "Chapo" Guzman have waged a bloody battle for control of the Juárez-El Paso smuggling corridor.

  3. El Chapo controla Juaritos, es la realidad. Pinche Linea ya nomas andan como ratas. Robando, secuestrando, y chingando a gente inocentes. Siempre lo han hecho pero ahora no pueden hacer otra cosa. que siga la limpia de Chiwawis.

  4. And it was just a year ago that some statistical nerds were predicting that there would be 5000 homicides in juarez in 2012. It's just a sign that the devil's lil' brother, el chapo, is taking over the juarez plaza, just the way he took over tijuana. But there is no need to celebrate yet. Almost 2000 deaths in still a lot of human beings destroyed for the sake of greed and power and hate.

I pray to GOD that 2012 brings the beginning of the end of this senseless war. No gang should ever be given the complete power to rule an entire city or country, to do whatever they please.

  5. I'm not a particular fan of Juárez Police Chief Julian Leyzaola, but he was instrumental in cooling things off in TJ, and he's been doggedly pursuing La Linea in Juárez.

Leyzaola's use of unorthodox methods, like torture and murder, is disheartening, but he's used these tactics primarily against crooked LEO's and violent criminals.

The main thing is that business has been much smoother in both TJ and Juárez since Leyzaola's rein.

Calderón needs to take a few tips from Leyzaola, and concentrate on violent criminals and corrupt members of law enforcement and government, not businessmen.

  8. Leyzaola's use of unorthodox methods, like torture and murder, is FANTASTIC! He knows that to win against these bastards you have to be utterly and completely ruthless. I would go even further than he has gone.

  9. So what if Calderon had done nothing and just stayed out of the chaos in the States of Mexico, just let the totally corrupt State and local govts collect there payoff money and allow the Gangs to have the total run of Mexico. Would the war between the gangs have broken out anyway? How many more good people would have been kidnapped? How many business killed by protection payments, vehicles stolen, people killed, etc, etc? So how many people would have been killed anyway, Who would the JOURNALIST BLAME THEN? Calderon is not in Venesuela,Honeduras, what about all the killing there?? Maby Geo Bush did it?

  12. Thanks for agreeing, ajulio.

@ 8:35 PM, I understand the need to forget about civility when dealing with animals, but a certain percentage of those arrested is always going to include innocent victims, which is a terrible toll on people who are already victimized by organized crime.

  14. 10:09 What are you proud or something? Go to rancho anapra and say something about el chapo! That's where la lineas at!it won't be hard to find them! At the entrance there's a guy with a nextel go and tell him to call them! Im not reppin that but im saying you should go with your cousins and do it! If they're gn then no problem!

  15. No one really knows whats going in Juarez, except people closer to it, then us, in my opinion. Because, this has gone back and forth for years now, the same was said last year, and the same will be said next year. There is no Zeta Magazine in Juarez to get a real clear picture of the criminal dynamics, it's hearsay and rumors, even the arrests of El Flaco and El Diego didn't yield that much in terms of who holds Juarez.

  16. El chapo clearly won Juarez plaza it was only a matter of time

  17. @10:09 So just because Chapos corridos were playing that means Chapo runs Juarez?? Im sure La linea could care less about teenagers Sinaloa Cartel wanna bees, when you and your cousins go to Ciudad Juarez in a commando of GNs then thats when you will see who really runs Juarez.

  19. @ J

to you, everything is hearsay and rumors.but I know that the CDS has taken over many parts of the juarez plaza and that the juarez cartel is a weakened cartel. the aztecas are dismembered both in juarez and el paso, although they still have some power in texas prisons. el chapo's intentions are not to destroy the entire CDJ organization. his motives are to occupy CDJ's territory. and right now, he's definitely doing exactly THAT. just like in tijuana....

  20. Obama and Holder's Fast and Furious gun trafficking ended in 2010 so it's not surprising the violence went down in 2011.

  21. The latest reports out of Tijuana suggest differently, but that's a different argument.

Hearsay and rumors, because what you just said was hearsay, it's unverified, and if I am not mistaken, someone will come in here, and post something directly contradicting what you just said, and that is all more rumors and hearsay.

No captured cell leaders, or bosses, or anyone have said one way or another, until there is more evidence on either side. Investigative journalism is all but extinguished in Juarez, apparently, so there is little to go on but the gossip and bullshit.

  22. I personally know people from the aztecas el paso who keep me updated with juarez and they tell me that gente nueva are already getting comfortable in j-town. Either way.....EVERYONE knows that el chapo's gang is all over juarez and is controlling many parts of the plaza and is already pushing a lot of weight in Vicente Carrillos' territory. Not the other way around. It's been over 5 years that the CDS has been in juarez and the CDJ has not been able to drive el chapo out. Now that la linea has been minimalized, the homicides have dropped and the people are now talking about how much safer juarez has been lately. The juarez cartel is being outbought and outsmarted by the sinaloa cartel. Also thanks to Leyzaola, who cleaned up the CDJ influenced police department.

As far as Tijuana, you are more familiar with that region. But the CDS is pushing much weight there too. The tijuana cartel are not as powerful anymore. They're not heavy hitters anymore. They defeated themselves and el mayo capitalized on it. Tijuana is also a safer city.

El chapo is the devil in disguise but he's a brilliant businessman.

  23. ajulio the aztekas are weak!Go and tell the ones you know how come when they wanna kill somebody they sent little teenagers to do it!I know a couple of times they did that and when the other people shot back they ran and got killed and they were no more tha 18 years old! Those aztekas have girls workig the corners or the stash houses thinking that the gn won't kill them! And la gn has been comfortable but both la linea and the gn lose people and have to be watching their back!

  24. Yo i live in juarez. Trust me the linea dont run sh)t anymore. All they got is the tecatos extorting people and sending lil kids to carjack f&/ken junkies that's all they know what to do.
