A group of suspected cartel gunmen have kidnapped five police officers in the southwestern Mexican state of Michoacan, officials said.
Mexico’s army and federal police are conducting an operation near Michoacan’s border with the neighboring state of Jalisco to track down the kidnappers and rescue the officers, said the state’s Public Safety Secretariat Monday.
Witnesses spotted the police officers being abducted Sunday in the municipality of Vista Hermosa by a group of hooded men traveling in several vehicles and wielding assault rifles, the secretariat said.
Seeing they were outnumbered and outgunned, the police surrendered their weapons without resistance and were driven away by one of the gunmen in a police vehicle.
The other gunmen drove alongside and escorted the victims through rural roads to avoid detection by the federal police or army.
The secretariat identified the abducted police as Jorge Briseño Rincon, Ruperto Rincon Hernandez, Rogelio Gutierrez Rincon, Jose Tavares Guzman and Juan Manuel Santos Tapia.
The state Attorney General’s Office included the eyewitness testimony in the case file and is analyzing which complaints and incidents the kidnapped police responded to in recent days in a bid to identity the criminals and determine their whereabouts.
Vista Hermosa is one 113 municipalities that make up Michoacan, where the Los Caballeros Templarios cartel has been waging a turf battle over drug-trafficking routes with La Familia Michoacana, Los Zetas and other gangs.
Coveted by drug gangs for its Pacific coastline and home to clandestine marijuana and opium poppy fields, Michoacan is a key entry point for South American cocaine, as well as chemicals used to manufacture synthetic drugs at laboratories tucked away in the mountains.
More than 80 homicides have been committed since the start of the year in the state, one of the flashpoints in a drug war that has left tens of thousands dead in recent years.

All drugs should be completely legalized! If people are going to use, they are going to use regardless of the law. Mexico should legalize and tax all drugs, putting the profits into the hands of local, state, and federal police. End all the extortion and kidnapping and stop wasting time fighting a "war on drugs" that can't be won!
ReplyDeleteAlso another thought. Its becomming embarassing for me to read these updates. Isn't there any real leaders in Mexico? People who want to turn their country around? There needs to be pride in the Police forces and these forces must be better protected. Life sentence for anyone guilty of kidnapping or murdering a police officer. Military Units cannot effectively enforce laws as they are not trained as investigators but are train in military tactics. I am actually embarrassed for the Mexican people. Order cannot be restored by shooting back when you are shot at. All crimes must be investigated and prosecuted. A crackdown on corruption must start at the top (Fed) and weed everyone out. Judges, politicans, military. Mexico needs to find the men and women who realize that the fate of their country is at stake and not sell out for short term monetary gain.

This is actually untrue. Coke is perceived as the "golden product" due to the mark up it receives as it crosses the border. Cartels actually make the bulk of their money in the weed trade. Demand is much higher in terms of LB's and the prices are steady especially relatively to the fluctuating price and quality of coke on the southern border.

ReplyDeleteI feel for the Mexican people. Still this June I will go to Mexico for 5 weeks to look for a new home. For the average person, if they stay away from drugs and keep your nose clean Mexico CAN BE a safe place to live.

ReplyDeleteI understand your point, and it is well taken. Personally I don't think the laws are stopping anyone you uses anyways. Just because its legal doesn't mean that more people are going to want to use it. If it was legal the Gov could supply proper and clean tools used to intake the drugs. Take a look at Vancouver, the place is a mess. Now that the local authorities have accepted the fact they won't solve the drug problem by making arrests, they have set up social support system and clean injection sites. The junkies can literally legally inject drugs under government supervision. Another example is Portugal. They legalized all drugs several years ago and saw a large drop in overall drug consumption. Drug addiction is basically a sickness. Addicts need help and support to get better and jail in not the answer. If drugs were legalized and taxed imagine what the revenues that would generate! And now imagine pumping all that back into the health system and specifically into rehab/drug addiction centers. It would truly be a step forward and profession reached in this battle against some ugly drugs.
Prohibition is only good at keeping the price of drugs high. It does not stop users or suppliers from doing whatever it takes to get and provide it if the PRICE is high enough.
