AP MEXICO CITY
— Mexico's former ruling party on Saturday suspended the membership of a former
governor accused of accepting millions of dollars in bribes from a drug cartel.
The
Institutional Revolutionary Party said in a statement that the ex-governor of
the border state of Tamaulipas, Tomas Yarrington, has been suspended from the
party until the accusations are cleared up.
Party
leader Joaquin Coldwell asked that Yarrington's party rights be suspended and a
commission agreed to the request during a special weekend session.
Coldwell
urged Yarrington to cooperate with authorities so that the probe doesn't affect
upcoming elections.
The
party, known as the PRI, held Mexico's presidency without interruption from
1929 to 2000, and continues to govern most Mexican states.
The
PRI's presidential candidate, Enrique Pena Nieto, is leading his two main
opponents by double digits in opinion polls ahead of Mexico's July 1 election.
His rivals, particularly the candidate of the current ruling party, have tried
to dent his lead by accusing the party of maintaining decades-long corrupt ties
to organized crime and have cited cases in Tamaulipas as prime examples.
Yarrington
was governor of Tamaulipas, the home base of the Gulf drug cartel, from 1999 to
2004.
Yarrington
has not been charged with any crime, but U.S. federal prosecutors filed two
civil forfeiture cases Tuesday seeking to seize more than $7 million in
properties Yarrington or his associates allegedly bought in Texas. U.S.
authorities are trying to confiscate a condominium in South Padre Island and a
46-acre property in San Antonio.
The
Corpus Christi case alleges Yarrington used various front men and businesses
"to become a major real estate investor through various money laundering
mechanisms."
Yarrington's
lawyer, Joel Androphy, said Yarrington does not own the properties in question
and is innocent of the allegations. Androphy suggested that other targets of
federal investigations have implicated the ex-governor to improve their own
situations.
Mexican
federal prosecutors have searched Yarrington's home in Matamoros, a city across
the border from Brownsville, Texas
and a stronghold of the Gulf cartel. Yarrington was mayor of Matamoros from
1992 to 1995, said an official at the Attorney General's office in Tamaulipas
on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to discuss the case.
Prosecutors
also searched the homes in Matamoros and the capital city of Ciudad Victoria
of three businessmen who U.S. authorities say acted as front men for
Yarrington. One of the men, Napoleon Rodriguez de la Garza was brought to Mexico City
for questioning, he said.

PRI = corruption.
ReplyDeletePRI Damage Control, there is more but I am not allowed to say it, I love Mexico.
ReplyDeleteWELL say it,idiot.You're anonymous anyways.
DeleteSadly the corruption is everywhere. If the US government really wanted to do somthing about this they would have burned the fields and bombed the factories. Going after the kingpins is bs.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes the corruption extends into the US: in many states they charge unbelievable fines for a joint, then you have to pay your payroll officer monthly, then you have to pay when they do random drug testing. And when the state needs money? Everybody gets pulled in for testing.
Yes, this is big business on all levels; why should the govt care? They're too busy finding ways to invalidate the constitution.
Jajajajaja its easier to kick him out, than giving an explanation. How about Moreira? Isn't him hiding in Europe? Fidel Herrera, Mario Marin? Ulises Ruiz? There still a lot of. CACA in this political cartel oops y meant "party " This are Pena Nieto 's. Maestro's along with the Diablo himself Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
ReplyDeleteCarlos Salinas=devil himself......E.P.N.=antichrist.....2012.......the return.!!!!
DeleteThat's like Getting kicked out of the AMA for being a physician.
ReplyDeleteNieto and his buddies have been caught!
ReplyDeleteHow long do you think the PRI is going to "suspend" his membership for? A month? Two? They must have learned this from the US Democrats in the last few years. Tell everyone what they want to hear, and then after the hooplah dies down, they get a pass. If the PRI has lead Mexico since 1929, then is has got to have the longest run of failed leadership in the history of the world! And they are going to win? Mexico is not kind to itself, is it?
ReplyDeleteWell thanks Chivis- Guess it's time to cast aside the holiday beer, b-b-q, and weiners in the US cause there is more Yarrington to sink our teeth into! An even more memorable memorial, puzzling over this high profile corrupt official. Good research. I hope they pay you well.
ReplyDeleteWow... If they held the entire party to the same standards there would not be a PRI! They are ALL criminals going back decades!-CHIVO
ReplyDeleteAll the politicians in Mexico are corrupt, all the way down to dog catcher and code inspector. It is a common fact of life that they take bribes to support their pay. Mexico needs to pay real wages to all public servants and then maybe something can begin to change.

Gracias Chivis si I did enjoy your article on Moreira, and yes I speak, write, and read in both lenguajes. Mexican politics are better than any Tarantino movie.

ReplyDelete@2:11PM well what the hell are you saying in those posts?? JUST KIDDING!!! Buggs and Ove take care of all the comments coming in on Main Board...and it is a huge task, many are not posted...
ReplyDeleteI am the administrator for forum, which is so easy in comparison, and your comment goes up immediately. Lots of smart, informed people over there. But if it is a comment that smacks of trollism I push the red button..such power! :)
he was kicked out of the pri not for corruption but for getting caught! jajaja
ReplyDeleteThe PRI could make this into a very positive thing, right before the elections. IF they have the cojones.
ReplyDeleteThey could hammer this guy. Come down on him from all possible directions. Demonstrate their intolerance instead of just talk about it.
Otherwise it's just another day in Mexico.
Getting kicked out of the pri for corruption is like being kicked out of the klu klux klan for having piss stains on your bedsheet
ReplyDeleteHuhhhh,u don't make any sence,knucklehead.
DeleteMexico,,,you is righteously fucked.
ReplyDeleteAnd its no one else's fault but your own.

That's a nice a attitude to have. If Mexico is fucked, who do u think the fuckers are coming for next?
