The bodies were discovered sometime between Friday and Saturday in a deserted area in "La Colorada" ranch, located in Ejido Jesús Carranza, near the U.S. border about 25 miles southeast of Ciudad Juarez.

The number of bodies found over the weekend in 15 clandestine graves in a ranch in the Valley of Juárez is now at 20, with a search for more bodies continuing, officials said Monday.

The victims were asphyxiated, shot or beaten and their ages ranged from 18 to 40 years old, said Jorge Enrique González Nicolás, the regional state prosecutor.

"The next step is to begin the process of identifying the bodies," he said during a Monday press conference.

The bodies were discovered sometime between Friday and Saturday in a deserted area in "La Colorada" ranch, located in Ejido Jesús Carranza, near the U.S. border about 25 miles southeast of Juárez.

González Nicolás said that there were 20 clandestine graves in the property. The bodies were found in 15 of them.

More than 100 state agents, investigators, K-9 units, anthropology forensic scientists and forensics experts participated in locating the human remains, according to the state prosecutor's office.

González Nicolás added that U.S. agents collaborated with Mexican authorities on Friday. He did not elaborate from what U.S. agency was involved, but said that they worked at the U.S. Consulate in Juárez.

Consulate officials said in a statement that it "always maintains open communication with our Mexican counterparts" and directed questions to federal law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, DEA, and ICE.Ê

"They (U.S. agents) complemented the investigation with intelligence work," González Nicolás emphasized. "México is leading the investigation."

The bodies were discovered sometime between Friday and Saturday in a deserted area in "La Colorada" ranch, located in Ejido Jesús Carranza, near the U.S. border about 25 miles southeast of Ciudad Juarez.

When asked if U.S. citizens can be among the victims, the regional state's prosecutor did not discard that possibility.

"Up to now, we do not have any information, but we cannot be sure until we identify the bodies," he said.

González Nicolás said that the bodies have been taken to the medical examiner's office in Juárez. There, authorities will take dental and DNA samples from the victims and make an inventory of the victims' clothes to compare it with the reports of those who have disappeared.

Although he estimated that the identification of all the bodies could take months, he said "it will depend on how much we have on hand."

He said some of the bodies had certain characteristics that make the identification easier. One of the bodies, for example, had a piercing in his mouth, he added.

According to the state prosecutor's office, the bodies apparently were buried two years ago at the height of battles between drug gangs seeking to control smuggling routes across the border. Federal statistics show more than 3,000 people were killed in 2010 in Juárez.

González Nicolás could not confirm reports from Mexican media that the discovery of the bodies was based on the information given to U.S. authorities by José Antonio Acosta Hernández, alias "El Diego," who was the leader of the Juárez drug cartel's La Línea, which is linked to 1,500 homicides in Mexico, including the slaying of three people tied to the U.S. Consulate in Juárez.

Acosta Hernández is currently serving 10 life terms in a maximum security prison in the United States. He was extradited last year from México, where he was arrested.

However, González Nicolás would only say that U.S. authorities and information given by people that already are in custody for a variety of crimes, including homicide, led Mexican authorities to the ranch.

González Nicolás said the search for human remains will continue in the same area and other properties near La Colorada ranch this week.

  3. The horrific tragedies continue. It is incredibly sad to continue to read your reports but I refuse to live in denial. How the wonderful people of Mexico have gone through this for years, is a testament to there courage. My prayers to all those in Mexico. Keep strong, there are many people around the world who care. Thanks Buggs.

  4. Tending to every murder and every death should be considered among our highest priorities. On the other hand; many of the dead could be discarded cartel henchmen. When the henchmen complete a dirty deed for the boss, he pays them with lead anyway and keeps the money. Most people won't shed a tear for a criminal who has made a bad choice(s) leading to his own demise. In these cases, the murderer should still be persecuted as his crime spree is continuing.

  5. Great to hear Acosta Hernández is in the US,hopefully in supermax lock down, that is no joke, and its a lot more than he deserves. This guy killed a lot of people, caused a lot of pain to hundreds of people.I sometimes think supermax no contact is a better punishment than executing them?
Who knows?I wonder how many more clandestine graves there are?Hopefully not many.

  8. Most of these guys are criminals because they are lazy. So look for a spot that is the easiest to dig, like sand. Read the book "Body Farm", about the real body farm where they place bodies in different scenarios to see how they decompose and to learn better forensic parodical. There is a chapter of how to find graves, and the psychology behind why they are (sometimes) so easy to find. Gruesome but fascinating book.

One day we may see the light, one day we may help one another to develop and talk to animals?I wonder what they would say?If we can look up and see the sun,and think"boy that is hot"how can we keep on doing mans inhumanity to man and monkeys?I would like to propose a sing song,if i may?Cumbya My Lord.We can all sing to the almighty human spirit that pervades our socks.May we find a way,let me show you,let me show you,the way to go.I don't know anything, but i know we can work it out.Cause we can come together,a mighty coming together.Maybe in time we shall bend with a better will and grace!
    I thank you!

"many of the dead could be discarded cartel henchmen"
Many of these so called henchies, could also be akin to troglodytes?Who knows how many henchies have been buried in clandestine graves? There seems as though there is a never ending supply of henchies as you say? Some of these hengies are born to be bad, some are born to be bland, some, bandy, but what you do know is,i will not bend over to these henchies no matter what they threaten to do .

  20. This narco war is real nasty, there is no way to know how many people in reality will be killed at the end. No matter what I believe president Felipe Calderon did the right thing in attacking the narcos, I remember how it was before when La Familia Michoacana was controling and taxing business in the state of Mexico. They don't do it as much as they did before nowadays. I hope Pena Nieto will continue the fight against organized crime.

  22. So whats the deal. Im interested inknowing who is running the show in the state of chihuahua and juarez. I hear chapo is pulling his help from the gente nueva amd peeps from durango are moving in. Ii thought alot of gn came in from durango and already had blood ties in chihuas. And juarez is back in lineas hand cus if it wasnt there would still be alot of killings. All the rural towns are being taken back by linea but still disputed with the ms from durango. Southernchihuas is where most drugs are grown and northern chihuas is where most of the routes to us are. So i would say linea controlls traficking routes and fighting for the land where the poppies and mota is grown.also i would say the bls are makin inroads and forcing los chaputos to fight on three fronts. Beltran leyvas from the west . La linea from the north and th zetas comin in from coahuila in the east.! Wat do u think.

  23. 10 to 1 says it was a bunch of the disappeared by the military during their term in Juarez. They use El Diego for their scapegoat again. Let's see. he has 10 life sentences in the US and for some reason he is snitching? Why? One real bad thing about this is, he is costing you and I what $2,000,000 a year for that high security bed? He is young. What is that going to cost us over the next 25 or 30 years? Some trophy. He isn't a kingpin, he is a scapegoat. Send him back.

  26. La linea is stronger than the media want you to believe and yeah the homicides in juarez are lower but everything else such as robberies are horrible.. the astecaz control the 3 main bridges and chapo outer juarez and chihuahua state pretty much is not controlled by anyone the battle is raging over the traffic routes thats why sinaloa hasnt pushed that hard on zetas. beltranez and juarez keep getting stronger and playing more intelligent, chapo will lose territory to them if he goes for the zetas...

    1. What is going on is that apparently la linea has been killing the regional leaders of sinaloa all over chihuhua state and and are focusing on taking back the state rather than the city. la linea pretty much have a strong grip on the city.. Theyve always have, Which is really smart because focusing on juarez will bring the military and as we know they have sided with sinaloa since the begining. Almost all the killings where done by federales and specially the military. This way they go unnoticed to the military and cause more damage on sinaloa which pretty much have their hands tied in their state cause the beltrans are taking territory in sinaloa and sonora.. it will be interesting to see how the war will change with the extremely corrupt pri..

  29. I dont support any cartels but here is what i have heard from relatives that live in juarez, and chiuas.... apparently la linea still has control of most of juarez and almost all chiuahua state. la linea struggled for a while to keep control of juarez when the soldiers and federales arrived along with GN to kick linea and aztecas out. when the soldiers and federales left, they left behind GN, whick were walking targets with nobody to protect them. Leyzoyla tried to protect GN with his municipales but aztecas starting killing cops and leyzoyla quickly called truce with the aztecas. this is just what i have heard from ppl living there
