Daughter Wins Mayoral Race After Candidate Father Killed in Durango

Borderland Beat

With 100% of votes tallied the victor in the mayoral election of San Dimas is Alma Leticia Reyes Guerra of the Citizens Movement party
The 23 year old teacher, replaced Ricardo Reyes Zamudio , her father  who was kidnapped and murdered on July 1 in the municipal of Tayoltita
Ricardo Reyes Zamudio, a Mexican mayoral candidate, had been found dead after he was kidnapped  while attending a funeral.
His body was discovered Monday in Tayoltita, a rural mining town in the northwestern state of Durango, riddled in bullet holes.
Zamudio was a member of the leftist Citizen’s Movement party and a candidate for mayor of the northern municipality of San Dimas. He was the third politician to be killed in less than a week, as Mexico prepared for its July 7th elections, the first since last year’s presidential vote.
"The cowardly killer of comrade Reyes is part of an alarming climate of violence and impunity, which seems to be aimed at inspiring terror ... before the elections ," said the Citizen's Movement party in a statement issued after the murder.

  4. Why would anyone run for politics in Mexico? its a death sentence. If the cartels don't kill you the government will and they will blame it on the cartels.

  5. It seems to me that the killing of leftist politicians was the order of the day leading up to these recent mayoral, state deputies, and governor elections in the 14 states in which they occurred. Although a few Priistas were also affected by this highly violent election season. In Baja Cal. a disputed election has arisen in the governo's race. The PRI and PAN/PRD candidates are both claiming victory. A recount is underway. I wonder if the party that eventually wins will have ramifications as to what cartel will benefit the most with the victorious party.

Poor "Comrade" Reyes. Another victim of the silent bullshit war. Silent bullshit war where the unaffected live in apathy. And the poor suffer at the hands of evil in the "Devil's playground." This is coming from someone who has been there. A victim who will never return to Mexico !!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a couple of days ago there was an article in Proceso about how the narcos decide the elections, the article mentions 1,200 municipal officials killed, 34 of them mayors, in the last 3 years only, no mention of the number of candidates but these past local elections from last Sunday have been extremely bloody and dirty, I have read reports of several municipalities, particularly in Durango but also in other states, I think Guerrero too if I remember well, where the narcos had made sure there was only one candidate running. It is a very serious matter, local politicians who are not completely sold to the narcos stand no chance in most of the country :(
