Self Defense Groups Extend To the Center of the Country Due To Insecurity and Corruption

Federal and state authorities have yet to find a solution to respond to the people of Michoacán and Guerrero, where insecurity has prompted the creation of self-defense groups, but in Tlaxcala, a state where there hadn’t been any news of a citizen’s front, the state’s first Community Police has emerged.

Yesterday, citizens of the municipal of Papalotla armed themselves with machetes, sticks, and pipes to protect its people and to stand up against crime and government corruption.

Earlier this year, self-defense groups were registered in at least eight states.  Michoacán and Guerrero are the states with the largest number of communities with armed civilians and that register more clashes and violence.

But far from being solved, the problem—albeit legal—where citizens arm themselves and set up checkpoints, has spread.

In recent weeks, the situation in Michoacán has prompted federal and state officials to meet to discuss the crisis of insecurity and violence in the state.

According to the governor of Michoacán, Jesús Reyna, the meeting built “a common agenda that benefits Michoacános”.  However, not even a week had passed when the Mexican Army, State Police, and Self-Defense Groups of Guerrero and Michoacán were in moments of tension, which caused roadblocks and military operations.

On Monday, residents of El Pericón in Guerrero detained federal and state officials due to a lack of compromises with authorities, and the group of soldiers who remained in the town, after reaching an agreement with Governor Ángel Aguirre Rivero and the Secretariat of the Interior.

In Aquila, Michoacán, the Army dismantled a self defense group for arresting a soldier.  After the rescue of their fellow soldier and the disarmament of the community, the military left the area.  As they left, the citizens, who complained of the authorities’ indolence to their security problems, returned to their posts.

Michoacán has turned into a war zone in recent weeks.  In seven days, according to official figures, at least 42 people have died in clashes.  Before the violence, Enrique Peña Nieto said that his administration would stand up to the problem and support the authorities of Michoacán in recovering territories and “rebuild the social fabric” in Michoacán.

“The purpose is to support the state government, but also backing and supporting the Federal government, especially in dealing with the complication and the complexity involved in rebuilding the social fabric of Michoacán”, said the president.

However, last Tuesday, the coordinator for the members of the National Action Party (PAN) in the Congress of Michoacán, Alfonso Martínez Alcázar, denounced the lack of attention of the President Enrique Peña Nieto about the crisis in the state and for not having visited the state in the eight months of his Presidency.

Tlaxcala and Its First Self Defense Group

Yesterday, residents of Papalotla, Tlaxcala, formed the first self defense group in the state in order to protect the people as well as motorcycle taxi drivers, to fend off crime and corruption in the operations that the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation performs.

Armed with sticks and machetes, around 60 civilians formed the police, who along with residents, protested against the operations conducted by the state government, as they have been assaulted during attacks.

The local press indicates that the conflict has lasted over three years and according to the leader of the motorcycle taxis, Mariela Pérez Rojano, they have been constantly repressed by the security forces, allegedly abusing their authority.

“That’s why the community police are to defend all of the people, the motorcycle taxi drivers and the people who use the motorcycle taxis, because more violence occurs with the execution of operations”, said one witness.

Tired of this situation, they declare that it was necessary in order to ensure the protection of the users and operators of the motorcycle taxis, through the use of the community police.

They said that the municipal and state governments have been unable to create jobs and security and that is another reason why motorcycle taxi workers have found that job as a means of providing for their families.

  13. Hope these groups continue to grow. They do a better job of keeping peace and protecting there homes than the government does. In my opinion the mexican drug problems a very complicated issue and has to be tackled in several diffrent areas in order to be effective. People will get drugs as long as they want them, and humans have been getting high for thousands of years. Prevention is better than treatment. We must have serious talks with our kids or younger generations. We must tell them the horrors of meth, heroin, and any other fucked up drugs. Tell them about the garbage lifes they can expect if the had that path. Jobless, living like animals risking there lifes on the street, and even death. I remeber my dad telling me at 12 years old he tried weed a few times, and he didn't like it. He mentioned it was the only drug he used, and how he was offered drugs but he always declined. I appreciate his openess. Not all mafiosos are bad people they don't all kill, extort, and kidnap people. Some just do there jobs and let's face it drug trafficing isn't going away soon. I believe the mexican gov shouldn't only fight the drug trade but also try as hard to create job growth and better social programs. Some people might not have an option and must sell drugs to survive. With jobs people might turn down drug peddeling. Mexico has the 12th largest economy in the world and has 22 open trade agreements with other countries. That's more than any other country in the world. They can trade and grow as a economy, and a nation. It has plenty of recources, tourism spots, and the gov does a good job of being freinds with any country in the world. With record foreign investments coming in, a growing car manufacturing sector, and the fact that its cheaper to make and import good to the u.s from mex instead of china. I think we will see mex be in the top 10 economies in the world in a not to distant future. Granted it depends a it depends on trade with the u.s but its trying hard to diversify there trade worldwide. The biggest problom in mexico isn't the narcos its the curropt bastard politicians who've been robbing it for years and work out of best intrest. How the fuck is it even possible that in todays modern world bullet proof trucks boarded by machine gun sicarios can ride around freely and kill as they please. They stopped being afraid of the police along time ago. And now attack federal police and soldiers. Can u imagine what would happen to the idiots that even tried to do that in the u.s?? They'd die so fast and people would get thrown in jail so fast its not even funny. Yet it happens down there due to the curropt officials who turn the othere way. Mex has a modern army and could wipe the floor with poorly trained sicarios. But someone always has to warn a narco boss of a operation against him, or there simply not chased due to having a cash agreement with corrupt milatery officals. Mex has attack helicopters that can make it rain death to narco convoys from above but corruption keeps them grounded. The narcos best weopens arnt there guns its there influences with the government. As many politicians as narcos should be thrown in jail. There not helping the country move forward and only damage and rob from the country itself. These are just my opinions and I can be wrong about things but I fully believe the power to stop, allow, or continue the madness to happen falls on the government. And these groups rising are signs of hope and people getting fed up and are saying fuk you to the gov and narco gangs. Goverments worldwide should know the power they have is what's been giving to them by the people, and that the hand that feeds you can also smack you. Sorry for the long post guys. Just venting my opinions-r.r

Clowns like this just make me laugh. They REALLY think if they did that it would all go away? yeh it would help but then the cartels would just move from drugs and focus on other crimes and there would be an increase in kidnappings and murder for hire etc.

Anyway I glad the people are rising up against these scummy cartels and corrupt government. The next thing to do is arm them properly not with bats and clubs but Ak47's!

  29. The reason the cartels are so powerful is because they are making so much money off drugs. If drugs were legal, their income would be a fraction of what it is today. The reason the government is so corrupt is because there are so many millions of dollars to throw around. Do you think that the cartels could pay off the army to protect them with the money they make from kidnapping migrants? Or do you think they would go to war over turf for pirated DVD sales? All these fights and violence over plazas; smugglings routes, narcotiendas, etc...its all drug related. The extortion and the robbery are just scraps that are left for the henchmen.

That being said, i dont agree with legalizing drugs. Just decriminalizing. There would be too many unforeseen consequences in legalization. I just felt like piping in because the comments on this article are particularly idiotic today.

    truths Tuta said:

the media says what its paid to say and doesn't function as journalism anymore: true, even in the USA, but especially in 3rd world countries

the miserable mexican government takes and takes and takes, but never gives anything back to the regular mexicans: true! the us might be corrupt in lots of ways, but they give back i.e., welfare and student aid, grants etc.. Mexico will let you starve

The Mexican government is going to sell out the people's resources to the Chinos: true, Pena Nieta just announced he's going to privatize Mexico's biggest assets (Pemex) and open it to investment from Chinese firms. This was announced after Tuta's video.

So there you have it, things he said that are true...now if you big mouth vaselina packing shit talkers can prove anything he said is a lie, you'll have some credibility!

that's how you debate mocosos, with facts not emotions...I think Mexico needs someone like Tuta to energize the people to go after the real culprits of the mess mexico is in, which is the biggest cartel of all, corrupt politicians...is any other cartel boss talking about wanting health, jobs, and security for the people?
