Massacre In Guerrero?

San Miguel Totolapan, Guerrero

At least 20 people, including women and children, were massacred by a comando in the town of Linda Vista, in the municipality of San Miguel Totolapan in Guerrero.

Gunmen arrived in the early morning in the town located in the Tierra Caliente region and shot at people, said Leopoldo Soberanis, president of the Human Rights Alliance of Guerrero.

“The town began to lay siege from five o’clock by criminal groups and have made a massacre, they say there’s more than 20 dead in the community and many wounded, children, entirely, and couldn’t be removed from the area,” said Soberanis to the newspaper Reforma.

“The government has acted irresponsibly, without responding to what’s appropriate to authorities, and all day today I’ve insisted by phone with the governor and haven’t obtained a response,” reproached the human rights defender.

Media reports indicate that the attack was carried out by 50 armed men at 5:00 hours and ended at about 14:30 hours on Friday.  Currently no authority has appeared at the sight since it’s difficult to access.

Sources on security and state government told the press that it’s not confirmed that a massacre took place, and indicated that they only have a report on the death of one person.

In this community, they have a popular assembly planned for next Sunday with inhabitants of other locations to form a self-defense group in the region.

The massacre of women and children in San Miguel Totolapan came on the same day in which Governor Ángel Aguirre Rivero and the National Security Commission informed that local police would be replaced by federal and state agents in Chilpancingo.

According to data from the National System of Public Security (SNSP), the state body was the most violent in 2013 with 2,087 homicides recorded; as well as being the state with the most kidnappings, with 207 cases recorded, only after the state of Tamaulipas.  As for extortions, it remained in the middle with 174 reports.

On January 30th, Aguirre Rivero said: “I will not wait for the Federation to come and resolve the problems of my state.  We must take on our share: the problems with crime are of the Federation and the municipalities must do their part and the state government shall assist.”

However, the state capital and the surrounding area has been the scene of murders, kidnappings, extortion, and malicious injuries.  The formation of self-defense groups has also been reported.

Eduardo Neri and Teloloapan

In the municipality of Eduardo Neri, a confrontation between civilians left four people dead.  The incident occurred in the town of Mescala around four in the morning, according to police reports.

It was reported that two vehicles were left at a 100 meters from the bridge, a truck with two bodies and a car with two charred bodies.

Different caliber shell casings were found in the area.  The area was cordoned off by ministerial police and the bodies were recovered by personnel from the Medical Examiner (Semefo) of Chilpancingo where they remain as unknown.

In Teloloapan, three bodies were found in the county seat, according to press reports.
