Jorge
Costilla-Sanchez, also known as “El Coss,” was escorted by federal police and
armored vehicles to a Brownsville Texas federal courthouse Thursday where he
pleaded not guilty to charges of drug trafficking and distribution, money
laundering and threatening federal officers in a 1999 incident. Security was
tight in and around the courthouse including the closures of streets adjacent
to the court. He was flown from San Antonio
via helicopter to Brownsville for the hearing. His attorney, Ed
Cyganiewicz, has represented Coss for
three years, however only bring able to speak to him via telephone while he was
in Mexican custody. Thursday morning at
the courthouse was the first time they had met in person. He said the extradition was so secretive, that
he was not given notice that his client was being extradited on Wednesday.
Cyganiewicz said
his client has agreed to extradition to the United States for two years. ExplainingthatCosshas more faith in the U.S. judicial
system, saying he considers it safer.
In the November
1999 incident, FBI agents, Joe DuBois and agent, Daniel Fuentes were in
Tamaulipas Mexico to meet with an informer. Cartel del Golfo (CDG) leader Osiel
Cárdenas Guillén. was tipped off about the meeting and whereabouts of the
agents. He along withheavily armed men
in a 6 vehicle convoy, including the former Matamoros policeman, El Coss, set
out to find the agents.
The agents saw
they were being tailed and called the municipal police for help. Help never
came for all intents and purpose, as the municipal police followed the group but
never exited their vehicles.
The agents, who
then had the informer in their vehicle, were forcibly stopped by the CDG group.
Osiel, wearing a
Colt pistol with a gold grip and holding a gold-plated AK-47, emerged and
demanded the agents hand over the informant, this while El Coss and others had
AK47 rifles pointed at them.
The agents
refused.
Coss (Mexican Arrest) |
Agent Fuentes
describes what happened next:
“Fuentes and
DuBois, now surrounded by 12 to 15 people, identified themselves with their
diplomatic passports. "There was a lot of yelling, a lot of cussing,"
Fuentes said, "Then Osiel was coming to my window. Was I afraid?”
“Absolutely."
"Your body
does weird stuff when you enter a crisis situation, all senses are heightened"
continued Fuentes. He said he could even see the scratches on the gun that Osiel
was pointing at him.
He said in that
short period of time, he felt like all his senses were heightened. "Your
body does weird stuff when you enter a crisis situation," said Fuentes. He
said he could even see the scratches on the gun that Cárdenas was pointing at
him.
To dissuade Osiel from shooting them, Fuentes and DuBois showed their FBI credentials,
but he said Osiel just grinned and said he didn't care. Fuentes said he had
a shot, but less than a foot of clearance.
The men raised
their guns to fire on several occasions After a tense standoff, Agent Dubois is
the one given credit for some quick talking, asking Osiel if he really
needed the grief that would befall in the aftermath of killing two US federal
agents.
Agent DuBois
says, "I told him, 'Think it over, man. There is no way that you will be
able to hide anywhere. They are going to come get you,'" DuBois mentioning that the DEA launched a massive manhunt after agent Enrique"Kiki" Camarena was killed by Mexican drug traffickers in 1985.
Finally, Osiel (at left) had the agents
and informant were escorted out of Matamoros with a warning not to return to the
city.
According to
Fuentes, Osiel said he regrets not killing him and DuBois in Matamoros that day.
Both Osiel and El Coss eventually were
captured, extradited and became inmates in U.S. custody.
In February
2010, in the same Brownsville courthouse that his one time friend Coss, entered his
plea on Thursday, Osiel was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading
guilty in a plea deal, to one drug
trafficking count, three counts related to threatening U.S. federal agents and
one count of money laundering.
Costilla Sánchez
was arrested by the Mexican marines in the city of Tampico, Tamaulipas, on September,
12th, 2012.
He was
extradited Wednesday, along with 12 others including Edgar Valdez Villarreal aka
La Barbie.
Below is a video
of Coss’ arrest:
Some material from BB archives and from KRGV
Osiel Cardenas ,eduardo costilla sanches el coss , Manuel Vazquez mireles el cabezon , Juan Carlos Reyna el jc ,Hugo ponze z4,el kelin are still wanted for this they where part of that convoy that day in Matamoros every one talked about that back then that earned osiel respect omong the other drug traffickers on the zone they would talk whit this sence of pride on how osn is done for that was one stupid move they would come for him.and I remember that around that year LA GENTE started to sound more and more or los zetas GENTE de osiel but cause of that osiel wassent in Matamoros or tamaulipas it self that often he would spend his time in nuevo Leon Monterey to be exact from where he would conduct business from, lazcano would do most of that work ,el karis to but el karis went of to work for Manuel Vazquez mireles on orders of osiel to take care of him when he would get to fucked up when osiel got the cartel running under his wing he took his closest friends along the ride Hugo ponze is still an active member of the gulf cartel very dangerous man closed to osiel ,the x are his bodyguards he treats them like shit ,they have had some of the most intense gun battles in Matamoros, they are LA mana or what is left of it ponze is well respected and fears on Matamoros.i remember when los zetas en golfos splited up a few years back they had this massive meatting I. Matamoros it was said that the meeting was to be decided if the cartel was going to devide and if it was who was going to take what city's and who was going to go whit who' weeks prior that even a year or two the split was being talked about sicarios from Hugo ponze or beto fabe or c.d.g it self would go up to small time zetas Guardia or sicarios and tell them va a valer verga este pedo asi que escogan bien con quien se van a ir , basically they told them the shit is going to hit the fan so chose your side.the meeting was in the back of the Walmart the only one in Matamoros the place has a lot size if a foot ball field I. The back of the building I'm not going to lie the streets where full of pick up,s suvs.Suburban s,tahoes, Ford f150s hummers scalades dodge rams ,Ford diesels Chevy Silverado s seem to be their favorite in and out you could see sicarios in the back and inside the vehicles a convoy of at least 120 trucks came in from Valle Hermosa we all knew that they where guarding lazcano lazcano el z3 end waiting for them here in Matamoros was at least 200 trucks of c.d.g Tony tormentas people scorpions lobos de senor gama where there and jrs 900 was their to including mario Cardenas son in law was there just the top chifes talked one a one they disagreed on business and the cartels splited that day they dint immediately declared war at first they gave zetas time to decide sides at least the low and Mead level to chose sides we would even go around town in reynosa and would encounter zetas and wouldn't shot it out we dint had orders to stack like we would say or yell to them ustedes por su lado I nos otros por el de nos otros perros ,we would eventually have green light to give them fire and fire we gave a hole lot of of we're glad to give them a had time and kill them that thought they could get away whit anything they would say some GENTE del senor osiel ,even in el penal de Santa Adelaida when the war started nothing happened they dint get killed just some beating tablasos that's it but what ever happened s in the streets affects the inside and orders where given to scorpiones in Santa Adelaida to murder the remaining zetas left behind and some new ones that just had arrived from Valle hermoso bought by the marines GENTE del apache bets fabe brother
ReplyDeleteKeyboard warrior!
DeleteGood post bro,El Apache was a crazed one..his brother Beto Fave was a plaza boss who let him ride when he became a Z,so the whole family were killed,Apache got arrested in Brownsville,as soon as he was out he go back down to kill people and rob stash houses,he killed police in a station,it was his group that was left on the road with Z painted on them,he was killed in a firefight Valle Hermoso, speak some more on Apache Fave ?
DeleteTony tormenta already knew el apache was working for los zetas so he told beti fabe to meet him in the back of el s-mart in some mid level colony that was beeing build beto fabe arraived in a brand new red dodge ram una blindada his brothwr el apache had one like his but black tony told him turn in his brother he refused so tony gave the order to take them out los L or grupo L most of matamoros mana back then where eather (L) or Lobo or scorpiones some cocohos but mostly new L,s they got picked up most of them in matamoros vallehermoso area some El apache wouldn't give in he was mad crazy mad so he started taking revenge
DeleteKeep the info coming, good post.
DeleteRevenge so he started a killing spree in Matamoros he and other L,s that where loyal to him about 10 started killing punteros guiardias s and some sicarios but mostly punteros the ones that sell the drug in the corner i guessed he preferd killing the because they where easy target most of them are very young and have no weapons, los lobos and scorpiones did some operations in LA secsion 16 they got some information from the zetas theycought in vallehermos by the navy now Santa Adelaida prison they gave out information that el apache went to seek back up from los zetas to take C.D.G and that he had some stash houses in secsion16 they picked them up and ended up dead in carretra Victoria outside of Matamoros.most of apache family is dead including like his mom,dad ,brothers ,sisters, unkles ,son daughter they joked that including the dog was killed no wonder el apache took even more personal they killed his fam because he wouldn't turn himself in he killed something like 33 ,35 people he even had a shoot whit los lobos I. Matamoros by LA Colombia Puerto Rico he was driving a red jeep cherokke they found him that day and had a shoot out we thought they where zetas at first but later found out that el apache was in that red jeep and when they crash he ran and got away leaving behind his acompliss
DeleteAnd to believe all this shit happened in certain towns along the Texas /Mexico border . Tons of money and violence , big names being spoken so proudly of and these big names now are either dead or shining helmet in prison . It's not worth it !
DeleteBro ,there are pictures of Apache lying dead after a shoot out it says somewhere, the head of his dad was thrown in a canal on Moros, his younger bro was Omar he was shot up with a bodyguard in his truck in Cameron by Gulf sicarios and his wife was kidnapped in Brownsville..Apache was killed leading Zetaz fighting plaza, the Castillo Flores paid a heavy price for Apache turnin into Z
DeleteYes his brother got killed in a old green dodge ram on fm 511 in that old circle k
DeleteI didn't know El Coss was part of the convoy that included Oseil Cardenas that held the U.S Agents at gunpoint, is this true?
Deletecrazy stories! if u got more of them please post
DeleteGreat job man keep posting story's like this I would like to learn more
DeleteThats Some crazy shit
Delete5:29pm
DeleteIt's true
Good post 12:02am what do you think chivis?
DeleteWhen they murded the zetas that just came I. Including some of the ones that where there they had a massive break out from the prison they backed up this pesera or this yellow school bus to the front of the prison and their partners outside all GENTE de Tony tormentas where waiting for them Tony gave the order to let them got most of them where scorpiones and alacranes they yelled to the guard open the door but the guard dint so they fired
ReplyDeleteSome warning shots they eventually oppend the door and at least 50 sicarios left that night I thing it was in August thre months later Tony tormenta was executed by the navy in Matamoros and most of the guy s that left that night are already dead now los ciclones are in charge elborejon is their boss under don Mario's son in-law and other Cardenas family members it is said that osiel still runs the show that he calls the shots from prison it is scary to think that he is in jail and he orders .I think its crazy that all the others traffickers take this because he turned into a informant and turned on his people and like Jr and people still follow them and declare war and kill for them that's part of why the zetas decided to take part because they weren't happy that they were going to take orders from a snich or a dedo the very same thing they got paid to kill whit out mercy now here you don't even know what going on price o. Weed has gone from 175 drls per pound to 250 per pound and coke its way to expensive its just dry they are more about just dealing locally and extortion than pushing dope
ReplyDeleteIts all bullshit the spilt happened because el coss killed el Concord 3 right hand man and best friend of el z 40 ... Miguel Trevino told them if they ( cdg ) didn't give him the person that killed el Concord there was going to be war so the day cam and nothing then that's when he riped through the north of Tamaulipas city to city killing any golfo that got in his way until he got to Reynosa he killed alot of el coss people to find out that el coss ran away to Tampico to hide
DeleteBasically ... Osiel cardenas guillen, Tony tormentas, Lazcano, Coss and all others that worked in CDG back in those days are responsible for the garbage trampaulipas is today.? Good job perros all of that drug traficking for nothing, leaving shits worse for the tamaulipuercos.
DeleteDrought because no asshole has the balls or sense to make it happen?A strong leader is needed to sort it out and get it flowin north again? It makes sense what you sayin,CDG they got the people's and the juice to connect up for 100s of keys, but what they do?Kill each other and tax locals and sell bags?
DeleteI know I left that out because it wassent only the kidnapping and murder of Concord 3 it was amany things that just started piling together for the split to happens wasy before the war c.d.g started killing zetas alongside their allies mostly michoacanos c.d.g even started to charge zetas a cuota if they wanted to cross by Matamoros or reynosa
DeleteThat's what you read somewhere else clearly I know coss people killed themselves cdg finished cdg not any other cartel
DeleteCDG was not "cooperating" with somebody that could raise a lot of hell and drive de population programs in trampaulipas quick enough, but the los zetas infiltrated with them by the mexican politicians sure drove a good example of brutality, after taking down osiel, all hell broke lose and there is no sign of abating, with the state sponsored autodefensa paramilitary like los Herculos, the problem is still the politicians and their allies, not los "narcos" and all the thousands of billions of dollars they make up...
ReplyDelete--Then get convicted of one count of one count of one count of BS, plead guilty please we need to save our butt ass name here_______
"..the problem is still the politicians and their allies, not los "narcos" and all the thousands of billions of dollars they make up...". Sadly, true.

ReplyDelete@12:47 Just go back to borderland beat 2011 and before. They used to post spanish comments back in the day. It was filled with a wealth of knowledge and insight and had comments from a few estakas as well. For some reason BB got hostile to spanish (yes....ironic) comments after people that didnt know how to read spanish started complaining that there were spanish comments. My thinking is just dont read it and move on to the english but hey its not my website. Another twist is that now that we have mostly english comments it seems to have opened the floodgates to racists (on both sides), trolls, and people who need more about the story explained to them (which we wouldnt need if we still had those commenters to help us understand the nuances).
ReplyDeleteI don't allow those complaints in unless I want to address them personally. I always say Spanish comments are not only welcomed but are among the most informative.
Deleteas for racism, yup both sides. The way I look at it the US racism seems to generate from extremist propaganda that has little to do with fact, but since those followers do not have an opened mind it becomes gospel. Sad really. and frustrating. I wish those people would not come to this site.
and then the Mexican racism, the hatred there, IMO, seems to be retaliatory. I post very few of either of the comments. we get so many and really it is a waste of time and effort.
I agree with you, if a translator is not good enough than just don't read the Spanish comments.
I have had nice people asking me to translate the comments, like I need another task. :)
Well put Chivis. I would add that what's to stop a primary English speaker from learning and/or expanding their comprehension of Spanish. Come on, if you really are interested you can figure it out. One will surely miss the nuances, but they will get the gist.
DeleteI tried to tipe in the most info I could and all of it in English it was kind of hard couldn't do it whit out my smart phone correcting me since my first language is Spanish i did it in English because most of the reader's coming to this side first language its English and wouldn't mind tipping it again in Spanish I had following borderlandbeat since 2011 i like the site not bad at all some of the comments in Spanish turn up to be true and are a good source of info some are not their just trash but most of what i said its a fact I'm from Matamoros and had been around for a while so has dad ,grandfather, uncles, cousins and friends where from here and it doesn't take much to find out what happened first hand .keep up the good work bb

DeleteSo much for your bullshit theory?
i honestly feel that El Coss was the best supreme leader the Gulf Cartel ever had.
ReplyDeletehe had the very best connections. and he isnt a snitch.
Juan Abrego was a much better leader than either Osiel, Coss and Tormenta put together.
DeleteYet. Give him some time he will sign like a canary.
Deletejuan abrego could never be able to deal with the zetas like coss did.
Deletejuan abrego was too soft. El Coss had to deal with a much more complex era of drug trafficking.
and he did very very well. had the very best political and military connections. probley only chapo and mayo and azul are the only capos who had more political and military connections.
but yeah the 2000s and all the way up until coss was arrested that was a much tougher era to be a drug lord. juan abrego couldnt handle that era. he was too soft.
Remember that before 2 000 there were texas politicians making millions of dollars "for the future", from the drug trafficking and money laundering, they are still around, haciendose pendejos con los.mexican gobernantes...
DeleteJuan has a brother & family members working with CDG. They control the southern plazas of CDG "Veracruz & Quintana & others". Much of these old leaders kids are becoming some body in the CDG. Expect the kids to try & take there father's old role in the cartel.
Deletelook. you can ask chivis what she thinks. she def knows her stuff about these things. but honestly juan abrego was a very legit boss. no doubt about that. but he did not have to deal with half of the headaches El Coss had to deal will. plus El Coss did just fine during his reign even with inner cartel fighting. if El Coss was boss back in juan abregos day im sure he would have done very well if not better. and juan abrego honestly couldnt handle fighting a group like the Zs. its a different generation and honestly a much tougher generation to be a drug cartel boss and El Coss did just fine. juan abrego is looked at like a don corleon and thats why a lot of people would say he was the better boss. but that isnt the case. El Coss was the real deal in a must tougher environment and still kept his Cartel afloat and kept it running like a well oiled machine even during the toughest of times. juan abrego ran a the gulf cartel when it was an easy going time. i think most capos could do what he did. its running a Cartel during the tough times that shows how good a leader truly is. and El Coss passed with flying colors.
DeleteThe Mexican military captured Guillen’s primary accountant, Ruben Sauceda Rivera (“El Cacahuate”) on January 14, 2002. Arturo Guzman (Z-1) died in a shootout with soldiers in Matamoros on November 21, 2002. Less than four months after Guzman’s death, the Mexican military captured Guillen himself in Matamoros on March 14, 2003.
DeleteFormer policeman Eduardo Costilla (“El Coss”), and Osiel Guillen’s older brother Antonio Cardenas Guillen (“Tony Tormenta”), slowly began to fill the vacuum left by Osiel Guillen’s absence, although the Gulf Cartel capo remained very much the head of the organization from behind bars.
Osiel Guillen’s chief assassin, known as “El Kelin,” snapped into place as the next leader of the organization after Guzman’s November 2002 death, but he was captured in October 2004. The organization then fell upon the shoulders of Z-3, Heriberto Lazcano, who through his own acts of violence and cold calculation had earned several other nicknames, among them “The Executioner.”
1:58pm
DeleteJuan Abrego would not be so rash to create the Zetas in the first place (in the long run Osiel made a bad move there) and he was no softy. He was hot headed and stubborn but not so much as dumb Osiel was. Juan Abrego was a better leader than Osiel, Torments and Coss put together.
Viva chivis and bb!!!!!
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteNo it was Juan
ReplyDeleteEven before el karis died there where problems within the c.d.g between z,s and golfos
ReplyDeleteWhat a difference of when a bitch is hopped up on drugs, and when a bitch is without it. El coss y La barbie with soft puppy faces after loosing all the freedom, dope included. Lol
