Judge Denies Release of 100 Autodefensas

Autodefensas imprisoned in Francisco J. Mujica Prison

By: Laura Castellanos | Translated by Valor for Borderland Beat

The Sixth District Judge located in Uruapan, Horacio Ortiz González, denied the release of the 70 autodefensas who were arrested along with José Manuel Mireles, the former coordinator of the autodefensas and communitarios in the state, on June 27, 2014, in the community of La Mira, Michoacán.

They are accused for the illegal possession of arms for the exclusive use by the Mexican Army.

Likewise, the judge refused to release 30 more autodefensas arrested on May 9, 2014.

Ignacio Mendoza, the lawyer for hundreds of autodefensas, says that the judge acted “cowardly and narrow” because he resorted to the same legal argument that allowed the freedom of Cemeí Verdia, who was accused for the same offense, and released on July 28.

The litigant asserts that the argument allowed the release of José Manuel Farfán, an autodefensa from the municipality of Turicato on February 2015.

The lawyer of Mireles and Verdía, the latter still imprisoned for the crime of murder, states that the release was achieved in the case because “they cannot enforce gun laws in Michoacán in that time period because of the rule of law was broken for civilians and authorities.”

“And if this judge is proceeding in this way with 100 autodefensas, then he should also proceed the same way against the 7,000 autodefensas who are armed and against the officials who legalized them, they allowed them to use weapons, they converted them into Fuerza Rurales, and they used them.”

The lawyer gave the news to the 100 autodefensas who are detained in the prisons Francisco J. Mujica and David Franco Rodríguez, also known as “El Mil Cumbres”.

Ignacio Mendoza says that they will appeal the judge’s decision.  Meanwhile, the autodefensas involved received the news with dismay, but said that they will continue to demand their release.

Anibal Barajas, a civil guard detained in La Mira, assures: “I am ready to continue with the lawyer and of course I want to appeal, we have fallen spirits, but we must continue.”

Eleazar Rubio, for his part stated: “We ask the new governor, Silvano Aureoles, for his intervention, because we did all the work and we gave him our electoral support and how he turns his back on us.  We are here because we fight for the wellbeing of our families.”

  2. Another gunman at a university in US at The University of Texas Arlington. I'm glad I have put two daughters through school and my son at Monterrey Tech in Monterrey Mexico never incurred any security issues as seems to be a weekly event in the USA. The citizen of America need to overthrow the government....a revolution within America is the only thing that can stop the security issues millions of Americans face at universities, schools, places of work, airports, cinimas, and most sadly in the open air markets where the Americans without money are trying to raise their families where the people from safer areas go to buy much of the $40 billion in drogas Americans love so much.

My prayers go out to all the innocent people of America who unlike Mexico seem to be in danger even when they are not involved in crime.

    2. 10:05 all the US needs is put the NRA and it's lobbyists in prison, also the lawmakers they own, the weapons merchants and fabricators need to be sued and fined or both, and it takes no revolution, there are laws on the books, and rules that are not enforced, because of $$$.
--even the US government looove to trade weapons for dirty drug money earned pretty much outside the law on the US, that is welfare for the weapons merchants, tolerated and encouraged by the US government...
In school in mexico, if you distinguish yourself in some way, look rich, too pretty or too smart, there are many chances that you will meet trouble, kidnapping for ransom or extortion, it does not fail, unless you are really in control of the poolice.

    3. What did gandhi do, the brittish were sick and tired of the hindi murdering their envoys and their ambassadors of good will, and the brittish had already in place all the shopkeepers they would need to handle India for them, when you are going, the brittish are coming, ain't no Paul Revere warning needed these days...
--Believe in peaceful protests all you want, and throw in Gunga Din for good measure...

    4. To 10:07 and Canadiana.Gandhi would have been killed in Mexico or just left in prison till he died. Look at ALL the Aoutodefenzas that want change that are locked up, you think the Mex government or the U.N cares? The answer is NO. Gandhi would be eaten up in Mexico's curruption. MIRELES IS MEXICO'S Gandhi and look at what he's going through, he's a political prisoner that wants changes just like him but there is too much money in the drug game so they are not going to make any changes in government.A WHOLE DIFERENT BALL GAME!! Real spit

    5. The brit's salt tax got them in trouble. Ghandi's Salt March took close to three years, with millions joining on his walm to the sea to get his own damned salt, thank you very much. The people turned the tides, so to speak. The Salt March took place while blood was being shed in several places, but the people kept on walking. The Brits massacred 1,000's of people in a park in a single day, which caused the Salt March to gather waves of people following the skinny guy with his walking stick. Racism is the catalyst to Ghandi's mission to nonviolence. As a young lawyer traveling by train in Africa he was subjected to it and arrested. He never let himself forget the experience's pain and humiliation. The brits didn't do India any favors. the subcontinent is many "countries," ancient civilizations and societies. Today, there are 700 dialects spoken in India and several mother tongues that than the Hindi or Urdu languages. The sheer masses of people walking to the sea is what changed the british mind set about hanging on to India. The 1948 war of repartition that results in smaller countries getting gobbled up to become Pakistan is a separate matter, but the fighting stopped because of Ghandi's hunger strike, shaming the Pakistani leaders. Dr. Mireles' is as important to Mexico's future as Ghandi to India. And, like the British were of India's Patron Saint, the Mexican gob is scared of Mireles' cause.
      VIVA MIRELES VIVA EL PUEBLO

    6. 9:42 you are right my friend. The drug game has way too much money in hand for any change soon. Both U.S and México benefit from drug money so it's going to continue until they band drugs but of course that's never going to happen. Whole diferent type of war ,and I agree gandhi would be eaten up in Mexico's drug war.Mr. Mireles and I believe 500 Autodefensaz incarcerated, dozen of autodefenza leaders killed by the government, innocent kids and women killed by Soldiers because they marched against organized crime. Michoacan is big on trying to make positive changes but you wont ever here it on any news channel in Mexico or the U.S because niether country want change. Peacefull marches won't ever work in Mexico, the autodefenzas tried peace but had to get guns to keep the cartels from killing and extorting them or their families. these cartels and Government are 20 times more violent than what Gandhi was up against. The murder rate in mexico is twice as bad in Mexico than the war in afghanistan..........

    7. The brittish were not in their country, the mexican government and their gun toting narcos and sicarios are all mexican...
--the problem is the US sponsors the mexican government criminal narco-politicians, and gives its american citizens free blinders to keep them looking forward, for change or sompim', and I mean loose change, by change...no pesos...

    8. @5:59: The Tibetans dont use guns and look at them. Look at the dali llama. Its all a cultural thing really. Sometimes, unfortunately, peaceful change just isnt an option. Especially when it involves tyrannical, violent governments.

  11. Unfortunately, the corrupt institutional political structure has freely infiltrated virtually non-existent party lines because the government is a virtual orgy of corruption where the poor are economically raped over and over again. And the "parties" are clones of one Partido Ratero Institucional.
