Sinaloa: Vehicle VIN match in missing Australian surfers case

Lucio R. Borderland Beat
Reminiscent of the Harry Devert Kidnapping/Murder

Canada’s National Post and Associated press is reporting the Vin number on the burned out van found in Sinaloa with two  immolated bodies, is a match to a van registered in Alberta, Canada to Adam Coleman. This information came from PJGE Sinaloa (state atty general).

Sinaloa authorities have come under attack for being remiss in the case of the two Australian surfers in Mexico visiting friends and surfing, who went missing after being heard from last on November 20th.  Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas, childhood friends, were living and working  in Canada, and enjoyed traveling during the construction down time.

The van was discovered the next day, yet authorities did not connect the dots for over a week.  One story of speculation by authorities when the van was discovered by a resident,  was that the victims may have been transitory from northern Mexico, selling goods from their van.

Lucas and Cox his last FB post 5.15
This guesswork, even though the Australian Embassy had the report of the missing men and their exact location when they went missing.

Notification was registered with local government as well as inquiries by family and friends.   Newspapers in Mexico did not make the possible link until November 30.

Relatives of missing persons usually turn to the press of their country when a loved one vanishes in Mexico.  That is a futile effort, contacting Mexican press is the best course of action, especially the smaller regional newspapers and radio stations.

Embassies and agencies of ones nation of origin can do very little, the power is in the hands of Mexico.  This is not to say not to contact your embassy, just know they have no control in a foreign nation.

Authorities were asked why the VIN number was not matched before today.  The answer was,  “Most of the van’s paint had burned off and its license plates were missing.”

The bodies are undergoing DNA testing .

National Post:
“A spokeswoman for the Sinaloa attorney General’s office, said the two Australian surfers got off a ferry from the Baja California peninsula at Topolobampo, Sinaloa, at about 10:30 p.m. on the night of Nov. 20
They apparently began driving immediately, but didn’t get far.
The van and the bodies were found a day later in a rural area of Navolato, about 160 kilometres south of Topolobampo, after police received a citizen’s report on the abandoned vehicle.
“they may have camped out on the way to Guadalajara.” Said the spokeswoman.
Lucas’ partner, Josie Cox, said she’d received a text message the night of Nov. 20, and she said Coleman had planned to meet his girlfriend, Andrea Gomez, in Guadalajara, on Nov. 21.  She is in agreement that they may have pulled off road to catch up on some sleep.”

The case is reminiscent of the Harry Devert case.  Devert, an American who went missing and last
Coleman in Mexico
heard from while traveling through Michoacán.  Like Lucas and Coleman, Devert also traveled extensively.  Many of their travel log photos are interchangeable.

His mother Ann was relentless in her search for her son, she traveled to Mexico on a campaign searching for information that would lead to his whereabouts.

Months after Devert’s his disappearance, an anonymous call gave the information that led to his dismembered remains.  He was suspected as being an U.S. agent by kidnappers.  Devert was traveling with two passports, French and American, with many “travel stamps” of various countries.  Devert, Coleman and Lucas were fluent in Spanish.

It seems off that in a robbery scenario the killers wouldn’t make the effort of torching the vehicle, bodies, and removing the plates.  Those actions are done more in line with attempts to conceal identification,  in a robbery it doesn’t make sense, but in what is perceived as high-profile victims it does .

Harry Devert motorbike and remains discovered in Guerrero

All three men were 33 years of age on the day they went missing.

On Jan 25, 2014, the same day as Devert went missing so did another American, James Stacy, he was kidnapped in Tamaulipas.  His body and late model truck were never found.

From Dean Lucas travel log, in Zihuatanejo, the destination of Devert when he vanished

The National Post:
From Coleman's sister's FB
An online fundraising campaign to support the two men’s families to travel from their home in Golden Bay in Western Australia state had raised more than 22,000 Australian dollars ($16,000) within a day.
Family members will travel to Mexico within days to assist Mexican police and Australian consular officials. A GoFundMe page has received donations from almost 230 people since it was established late on Sunday.
“My brother’s family is overwhelmed by the response,” Coleman’s aunt Jane Cattermole said on Monday.
“Now they can bring Adam home,” she added.
A friend reflects on the life of Coleman, excerpt below is from an article published by ABC.Net.Au:

Mr Coleman 'in love and ready to settle down'
Mr Osmanhodzic last caught up with Mr Coleman on a trip to Bali a year ago.
"He was going through this transitional period. He was about to go into the next chapter," he said.
"I reckon [the trip to Mexico] was his last trip, he was ready to settle down and you could tell he was in love."
Mr Coleman and Mr Lucas arrived in the Mexican state of Sinaloa on a ferry from Baja California at night before beginning a journey toward Guadalajara, some 900 kilometres away.
Their burnt out van was found a day later in a rural area of Novolato, about 160 kilometres south of Topolobampo.
Sinaloa is considered one of the most dangerous places in Mexico.
'I'm glad they weren't alone'
Mr Raitt said the pair would have had no hesitation travelling to the area.
"They would have thought 'this is going to be great fun, this is going to be awesome, everywhere we go there's going to be good people and we're going to have a ball'."
"That's just how they lived."
He takes some comfort in knowing they were together in their final moments.
"It gives me some sort of satisfaction that they were together," Mr Raitt said.
"They were lifelong buddies.
"They would have comforted each other in the worst moment of their lives and now they're resting together as well.
"I'm glad they weren't alone."

    6. According to FBI; of 8 million Americans that visited Mexico there were 111 Americans killed in Mexico in 2010 and almost all killings in two border cities. Of the 111 almost 100% Americans killed (source doesn't give exact percent) were US gang members or Americans proven to be selling guns or in drug trade and with criminal pasts.

Even with the total 111 (mostly dealing in illicit activity), there was a .00138% murder rate. I know for a fact that my high school in KC, and a few US colleges this year have a much, much higher murder rate than that! I'm a 9th grader and can do some objective research and 5th grade math and figure out that being a tourist to almost all of Mexico is safer than being a student at my school. Why don't some of you look at the facts and quit generalizing with ridiculous statements like "Mexico is at war". That's idiotic; but it would be accurate to say criminals are at war just like they are here in KC over who gets to sell dope where.

    7. It is the state department that keeps numbers and they have consistently reported 20M americans into Mex each year. for 10 years it has been about the same. in 2013 there was 81 Americans killed in mexico out of 20M and in 2014
      it was 100 killed.

However, playing odds is ignorant, visitors must also travel smart, know the place they are visiting and that means current not a month ago. see the state department website for good tips of what to do and not. what type of Taxis is important, those guidelines are important to know.

I spent 95 bucks one way and it was worth it. Those little ranchos in sinaloa are littered with sicarios and narco, they get paranoid when new people stopsby especially at night time. I'm not saying they got confuse them as foreign agents cuz they speak Spanish. But the odds are they were mistaken to be agents, good build and speaks Spanish. What are these two white guys doing in sinaloa in a little dirt road near farming fields?

    17. Oh god.. I love those arguments.. taking jobs away from Americans, huh? And which jobs are those? I've worked construction, worked picking tomatoes, and lawn maintenance. I'd say the jobs most illegals are known for getting. And each time, I was the only white guy there. They were all illegals. Know why? Cause Americans are lazy, and don't want to work so hard for so little. In my years, upon years of work experience, I've never, ever been passed up by an employer so he could hire an illegal, and have never seen it happen to anyone else. So if that's so prevalent, why haven't I ever seen it? Or heard of it for that matter. Our infrastructure NEEDS these cheap laborers.they can work so much faster than anyone else for so much cheaper. Our country won't do too well without them. And for another generalization, I've never heard of an illegal obtaining welfare, or food stamps. So get off of it. Have some experience , first hand.before you make these old, unfounded arguments. Oh, and more and more, companies won't hire illegals because of the stigma, and because the government has been cracking down on this. They now favor flying Puerto Rican's in , housing and feeding them, and then charging then for it,while paying then minimum wage, practically enslaving them. And it's all legal. So as you pass that construction site, or that farm on your drive, please remember just cause their skin is brown, it doesn't mean they're illegal. If you are Hispanic, you should know better than anyone, that your arguments are obsurd

    18. "Lazy Americans", yes but why? They can live as well being on welfare. Why work a labor job when they can sit on their ass and collect a check?

"Hatred against foreigners" should be used sparingly, it looks like these murders were about the targets disrespecting the robbers, they would have been robbed by the needy robbers, that would have robbed anybody else all the same, regardless of the race, which is the specialty of mexican poolice officers and the military, not the specialty of the "mexican racist hateful narcos" that people in high positions in government still love to demonize so much...

  7. I think you are correct Lucio, these two, as Devert was were mistaken for agents of some sort. Amazing how many similarities in the two cases.

one other thing I suppose one should not do if having an encounter with bad guys, act dumb, DO NOT SPEAK SPANISH. that possibly could contribute to an assumption that a person is an agent. passport filled with frequent trips far and wide, speaks foreign languages ..fluently. Yup, it makes more sense.

    1. That's good advice, but very hard to follow if you're truly fluent, or even good, in Spanish. I might start practicing that when I get pulled over down here or deal with any creepy people.

I've always suspected one of the reasons foreigners are NOT generally kidnapped in Mexico is that the bad guys don't want to deal with someone they assume they can't communicate with.

    1. Canadians know Mexico can be risky due in part to the poverty and struggles the good people face. However, most Canadians have NO idea (including myself until I stumbled across BlogDelNarco and Borderland Beat in a research project) about the Calderon vs. Cartel slaughterfest that ensued.

Sure, most of us (Canadians) establish the 'safety' factor prior to travelling the world. But where in Canada does our media educate us on the real dangers with facts and graphics? Our radio stations give free trips to Mexico as prizes. My best friend can't wait to go back to Mexico despite me trying to show her articles w/pictures etc.

If Australians, British and Canadians had REAL information, as Borderland Beat provides, in our mainstream media then one could lay blame on us for going into 'hot spots' but I assure you that not one of us who live a decent lifestyle (not talking about those who travel to Mexico for nefarious purposes) would ever think we'd visit Mexico to be tortured, raped, decapitated, dismembered. Adam Coleman and Dean Luca did not know how nightmarish their travel plans were and certainly did not deserve to be terrorized, afraid and killed. *(note to those who suggest they went to buy some light social contraband)

It is impossible for most outsiders to understand Mexico's plight. We don't live, breath, sleep, nor know the land and its corruption. As Chivas once said, 'nothing in Mexico is what it seems'. That is a profound, grotesque and factual statement.

To the girlfriends, family and friends of Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas I am sorry for your heartbreak and loss.

Question: Why would these guys and Harry Devert be killed if suspected of being 'agents'? It doesn't make sense to kill 'agents' due to publicity and wrath of the USA government.

  21. I travel from Chihuahua City to El Paso once a month. I also travel way South quite a bit for business even though I am nervous to do so. I see Texas plates coming into Chihuahua and going into some of the ranching communities. Mainly to visit family. I see occasionally California, Arizona and other plates. But rarely. As I get further South towards Jimenez, Chihuahua, and even further South USA plates seam to disappear off the roads. Except my Texas plates which are on my truck. Sadly the Narcos and criminals love to take vehicles with Texas plates.

The amount of murders in Mexico to foreigners is not that high. It is because most people fly into their destination. Those people are not killed much, but they are robbed, fleeced, drugged, scammed, rooms robbed and more at times. Much more than you would think, but it is not reported or statistics taken.

When I travel further South you rarely see out of country plates. I rarely see plates from Coahuila, Durango and other states of Mexico here in Chihuahua. I saw some Durango plates on a red Volkswagen bug not to long ago when I went to Home Depot to buy something. The car was parked and the owner was laying behind it dead. He had just been shot. One of them had shot into the air to scare people away and to cause them not to stare. After the criminals left people did not exit the parking lot. They just walked past the body like nothing had happened and just went about their business as usual.

If more American plates were to drive South you would see more killings I am sure of that. People know you are carrying money, credit cards, cameras and more. You are a moving billboard. People in the States have means and money. Most people know better than to drive to these more dangerous areas with out of state plates. Cheaper to fly and rent a car. Gas here is very expensive and lots of toll road costs. However safer on the toll roads. The people are very friendly. But to go South you have usually only one option as far as roads. If you are stopped by Federal police, military or other they can be linked to criminal organizations and usually are. They can pass your information on so that you can be detained down the road. The 80 Canadian and German tourists that were stopped and robbed of everything they had here about 1 1/2 months ago were in a tour group on their way to Basaseachi falls when they were stopped by men with automatic weapons. They caught the leaders and it just so happens it was 7 police officers.

Fly to your destination. Do not risk your life. Tourists do not know the best ways and what to do to stay safe in Mexico. I would not camp out here in Mexico. Better in a hotel where you can park your vehicle inside the grounds. If you rent a car do not take roads that are not to far out of town and drive roads that are know tourist destinations. Lots of great people, But many bad ones are watching for an opportunity to make more in one haul than they normally make in a year. Most know they can get away with it too.

I have seen so much of hidden Mexico, but that was over 30 years ago. I would never attempt those drives now. I would really like to travel to these beautiful destinations again.

Just remember that most Mexican people are incredible and very generous even if they are poor. But they are also victims to the bad people here.

  22. Military age males, traveling solo or duo, need be VERY careful when traveling through conflict zones. Pay attention to border guards, if u see them carefully analyzing pages in your passport you can bet they are part of the cartels & you may want to turn around. These are the only people who'll see where you've been, apart from the odd hotel employee verifying an entry stamp. A normal border guard should carelessly flip to the last empty page to stamp, bad ones will scrutinize every stamp and someone will stop you down the road. It happened to me. If you're from any western country & you've got a stamp from ANYWHERE in the mideast you're automatically assumed gov agent & fuc**ed. Fact is there's nothing in Mexico you can't find in a million other countries in Latino America that are not at war, makes no sense to do tourism in Mexico right now. We can only pray these pour Ozzies had a quick death. RIP.

  24. My immediate thought to the breaking local Canadian news [2 young Australian surfers driving a van plated in Canada go missing in Mexico] was "What were they thinking!" Having lived and worked (legally) in Mexico... and being an avid reader of BB for years, it was a logical thought. But for most, aside from it's dedicated readership, BB is not a mainstream news source. Foreign gov't sites issue vague travel warnings. Avid young traveling adventure seekers have a history of believing they are immune to danger. This makes for a tragic ending. RIP.

I would never again risk driving anywhere in Mexico as I know that one can be an easy crime target of some kid, innocent looking halcon, store clerk, mechanic.... or even the police . Too bad, such a beautiful country ruined for tourism for generations unless it wakes up and transforms itself drastically....

    2. NBC, LOS ANGELES:About 11 a.m., up to three people entered a center that serves people with developmental disabilities in the 1300 block of S. Waterman Avenue in San Bernardino (map) and opened fire with hundreds of people inside, according to the San Bernardino Police Department.

"They were dressed and equipped in a way that indicated that they were prepared," San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said. "We have no information at this point that this is terrorist related in the traditional way people may be thinking. Obviously, at a minimum, we have a domestic terrorist-type situation that occurred here."
Authorities were searching for those involved. Multiple agencies, including the FBI and ATF, were assisting with the investigation.

Police: Gunmen in San Bernardino Mass Shooting 'Came Prepared.' Images from the scene showed law enforcement personnel armed with rifles and wearing protective gear fanning out across the area, as emergency responders treated multiple victims in the street.

"They were being carried on trucks… They were shot, they were injured. Some of them did not survive," said NBC Los Angeles reporter Tony Shin, describing victims he saw being brought to the triage area.

The shooting broke out at the Inland Regional Center, which serves more than 31,000 people with developmental disabilities in San Bernardino County and neighboring Riverside County, according to the center's website.

According to the site, the facility is the largest of California's regional centers, and is "a nonprofit, private community-based agency that is proud to help obtain services and support for our constituents."

Law enforcement officers were going through the "tedious" process of clearing the three-story building, where multiple people were still inside, San Bernardino Police Lt. Richard Lawhead said.

One man at the scene said his daughter, who works at the center with the mentally disabled, had texted him. She was hiding in a closet with other people, he said. The man was still awaiting a text to ensure that she is OK.

Another man told NBC Los Angeles his sister has cerebral palsy and attends the center. NBC Los Angeles photographer Alex Vasquez made his way to the Inland Regional Center soon after the shooting and said he saw many people with severe injuries, and that he spoke to some who were in shock.

"They heard many gunshots. A lot of people were just yelling for their loved ones," he said.

No one knows much and may never will. The whole world is being ruined and fueled by these new strong hard drugs. The many innocent good people that have to live in these conditions, not to mention all the Mexicanos that lose their lives that we in "the first world " will never even hear about. Meanwhile EPN is touting " progressiveness " on Climate Change while he is determined to pave over more of Mexican beaches with five star resorts and golf courses aka giant money laundering machines to make Mexico the PRIMER tourist " destination" once again while he spends dinero on a new presidential jet. Disconnect ? Perhaps an end to THE WAR might encourage more tourists, not to mention saving some gorgeous pristine habitat for tourists who would be more than happy to support the flailing economy.........but , then again most tourists wouldn't want to see the real Mexico let alone hang out with real Mexicans. Turning half the population into low wage servants AND druggies while the traditional cultural values go afuera la ventana is not all that appealing to many Mexicans. I read this am that the. HIV/AIDS rate is up 30% in BCS . I don't have answers either but VIVA LA RAZA, Mexico.

Former state police officers from Culicán are the presumed killers.

  41. Chicago is more dangerous than Sinaloa for a tourist. This story does not add up. Cartels typically don't kill tourists, so this was likely a petty robbery or drug deal gone wrong. As someone who goes to Sinaloa regularly and has family there, it is both good and bad. What is very bad about this though is that there will be no justice, unless the cartels do the job for them.

  44. I just spent the past month in Los Mochis and got back 2 days ago. I'm a white American 30"s and my wife if from there. Each year we spend one month there. It was very safe and nice city as long as your not in bad business.

I really think this was cholo robbers. I have driven around the greater Mochis area many times and the only issue that I encounter is an extremely poor person that thinks I have money.

The cartel has better things to do than kill surfers, plus this is attention to Mochis. It like any city stay out of the crapy part of town.

What people don't realize is that in While it's a very pretty state with great beeches, it also has some very poor towns.

They were not wise if they drove off the 15 to save toll money. Oh yeah what ever moron suggested that chapo has suspicious people killed is just a moron. I'm pretty sure he cares more about his business then some gringos

I assure you I stick out there but I'm a computer nerd and stay in at night so i have always avoided problems. (With the exception of The occasional police shakedown when I drive lol)

  46. This story truly saddens me as much as it angers me! These two individuals despite what they saw and read about the state of this country still chose to visit and enjoy it's wonderful landscape. It is evident how good hearted they were. I'm assuming that like many of us, they too still believed that there are far more good and honest people than evil ones. Yet, regrettably, they encountered these savages with no regard for a human life. These animals are not Mexican. I hope they rot in prison first, then in hell.
They are a despicable form of cancer that has invaded this once beautiful land. I blame the government! It is their job to create opportunities for its citizens. It's the lack of jobs and perceived future that has allowed this scum to thrive.
