Guerrero: 2000 attendees at the funeral of school director who died in captivity

Lucio R. for Borderland Beat

"No more kidnappings of teachers!! ", shouted Gabriel Perez Mendoza 18 years old, the nephew of a Guerrero principal who died while in captivity. Perez Mendoza broke down in the middle of his emotional speech at his uncle’s funeral.

More than 2000 people attended the funeral on Sunday  for abducted school principal (called directors in Mexico) Joaquin Real Toldeo the principal of  Secundaria Técnica 114 in  Santana del Águila, Guerrero.

Gunman burst into the school last Monday and violently abducted 5 educators including Real Toledo.

Residents and families pooled together and paid the ransom demand, not knowing Real Toledo was dead, reportedly from an asthma attack sometime during his first day of captivity.

Although his body was badly decomposed when discovered on Saturday, the 4 surviving teachers gave their testimony.

They report that on the first day of captivity, Real Toledo complained of difficulty breathing, the teachers told their captors that the principal was in trouble and very ill.  “They didn’t care, and watched him die”, said the teachers in their testimony.  The 4 teachers said he died from an asthma attack.

On Friday, Xavier Olea, Guerrero attorney general said that, according to the testimonies of those released, they testified the director became ill from asthma and died.  The attorney general added, that it is not certain if the death was brought on by the long distances of walking the captives were forced to do.  At first reports indicated he had been murdered, but later reports from reliable publications such as Reforma, and Animal Political, said the testimony of the 4 surviving teacher  stated he died from asthma.

The teachers were found in late on Friday after the morning discovery of 21 men from the neighboring town of Arcelia, who had been abducted on their way to a wedding in a convoy of cars. They were released alive.

Authorities say that those responsible are a newly formed group of kidnappers, formed by a former member of a cartel operating in Guerrero.

On January 12, five narco mantas were displayed throughout Acapulco. The banners addressed to various police agencies and groups, stated that the Beltran Leyva group was not responsible for the extortions and kidnappings, however they did say they would be clearing out the people that are culpable. The mantas were signed “Beltran Leyva”.

    2. Its illegal to own or carry firearms unless you're military or police. Its a federal charge if you get caught with one. Mexico really needs to allow their citizens to arm themselves! Only then will this killing of innocent's stop!

    3. especially given the fact that the vast majority of their police are corrupt

    4. 2:44 that is incorrect. Article 10 of the constitution of Mexico is the right of citizens to bear arms, however the type and caliber is restricted without a waiver. And assault rifles are banned and only the armed forces can carry those. There is only 1 gun store in Mexico, and that is the army. Rural citizens are usually given permission to carry and possess weapons not afforded to other citizens.

the easiest way to acquire legal ownership is to apply for hunting and target use.

it is legal for Americans to take weapons into Mexico, however you have to apply for permission, hunters are usually those applying for permission. Many Americans hunt in Mexico

    5. Sounds like Americans have more rights in Mexico then Mexicans have in Mexico when it comes to firearms Lucio. Which is a damn disgrace and ass backwards.

    7. Weapons have not fixed ANYTHING ON THE US, why are you proposing FAILED SOLUTIONS FOR MEXICO?
      WHAT WE SHOULD DO:
disarm the military and the police, and really punish criminals, plus make every community self policed, federal and state police should just inspect local police, not impose their pinchis "quotas, piso or plaza" payments on everybody. The central government.has been exacting a King's Ransom to the rest of the country for stealing all they want for long many enough years, this time about 100 years since the mexican revolution, paid for by the US...

    11. I guess where I am going is how can a Mayor or principal protect themselves in these situations. They can't have 24x7 protection and pulling a knife on armed kidnappers won't work. There is no good solution, but history shows that if you have strict gun laws the bad guys will get guns and the innocent won't. Innocents can't defend themselves like this.

  6. See! When your federal government is as crooked as Mexico's, crimes like cartel activity & kidnapping are condoned. Mexico will forever be under siege either until a government is installed that will eliminate all criminal organizations or until the United States grows tired of Mexico & invades it in order to shut down the cartels. The latter will likely never happen because the cartels employ a lot of Americans that aren't actually on their payroll. Without the cartels, the US would not need so many law enforcement personnel. That's a lot of jobs amigos. A lot of banks making money off the cartels. Laundering, wire transfers, etc. And the cartels actually pay taxes on their real estate inside the US.

It's all a crooked scheme. And the sad thing is, everyone knows that nothing will be done about so they don't care who finds out who is crooked.

  13. U.S. renews travel warning to Mexico as killings of Americans climb.

The U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning to all Americans planning on going to Mexico – renewing an expired travel ban issued in May of last year – as the latest figures show the number of murdered U.S. citizens south of the border has gone up.

The number of American citizens murdered in Mexico rose from 81 in 2013 to 100 in 2014, according to the U.S. government. Citing threats to safety and security posed by organized criminal groups, the State Department says U.S. citizens have been the victims of violent crimes such as kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery in certain parts of Mexico.

Mexico ranked No. 9 among the world's top 10 most dangerous countries in 2015, according to the United Nations World Travel Organization.

  14. How difficult it is to get the permit to carry the 380 caliber is when you need to hire a lawyer to help you with the process here znd wait until most agencies clear your name of any wrong doing.

God forbid state police, military or simply the organized crime associates find the 380 on you.

You'll have to pay what the gun is worth, lose it to them or shoot it out with your seven round clip.
