Filemón is back home after kidnapping

Posted by DD for Borderland Beat from Milenio and Mexico News Daily

Statistics indicate that kidnapping in Mexico is on the rise.  Most of those do not have a happy ending.

Filemón is an exception that.  He was the victim of a kidnapping in Motul, Yucatán.  After his disappearance his companion and friend, Gilberth Canul Cupul,  received a demand via the mobile phone application WhatsApp for a ransom of 1,000 pesos for his return.

The kidnapper began at 1,000 pesos and then reduced his demand to 500. “I offered him 300, then 400, but he didn’t want it,” said Canul.

So he reported the crime to local authorities and began searching for the missing donkey.

It was found in the possession of Luis Rodrigo Tec Chalé, who claimed the animal had entered his property.

Canul now has Filemón back and has withdrawn his charge of theft.

He said he didn’t wish to make an ocean out of a glass of water.

  3. Is this for real? was it meant to be funny? Kidnapping is nothing to joke about. No way to compare the thousands of human lives who have been affected by kidnappings to that of a donkey.

    glad he was found though..

  5. If a family can "forgive you" for a crime, the law just steps back and everything else is fine. This is whats wrong with México, anybody can kill a pedestrian with a vehicle, and no matter the reason, if the family "forgives them", there is no crime to punish. Looks like the laws are design to protect criminals and punish law aiding citizens.

  18. Hey, I'm no one, but this story does seem a little misplaced amongst the content of this site. Just my two pesos, which seems to be worth every day. Talk about Chong, Humberto Moreira and friends, Mireles, AD and what's left of the real movement, shifting borders between the bad guys, news from the frontera. That's what I come here for anyway.

  19. I typically view Borderland Beat as a site where it's writers take seriously what is happening in Mexico so it's a bit surprising to see this piece published here. Not offended by it, but it definitely seems out of place and not what I come to this site for.

    1. @4:01 I wrote the story and I take a little offense at your comment about the writers usually take seriously what is happening in Mexico, seemingly implying that I don't. If you search the archives for DD you will find hundreds of my stories going back to 2013 when I became a reporter on Main Page. If you do the same search on the Forum search engine you will find more than 5,000 stories and comments going back to 2011 which show how much I care and take seriously what is happening in Mexico.
I disagree with you that an occasional (really very rare) fun story is out of place.

    2. Dude, most stolen animals are kept and not held for ransom...if you want to link what is happening in Mexico to Filemón just deduce the trickle down effect of organised crime kidnappings of humans to the average thief making a quick dollar on Mr. Canul's donkey.

    3. 7:23-Keep up the good work DD.It should be a policy at BB that for work to be critiqued should only be from authors whose work has graced the BB pages.Well that's stretching it a bit but you get the drift. It's good to have an enlightening story once in a while like the cop who lost her job for flashing her boobs as most are really intense with a definite negative streak in them eg.no happy endings. It also is narco related even though I'm pretty sure the kidnapper wasn't a narco but the mentality exists as Canadian girl pointed out.It makes me wonder how prevalent animal kidnappings are in Mexico? What about a prize bull or stallion or the whole herd for that matter?

    4. Somebody mentions "el señor de los gallos" and I was wondering about the gallinas, no even break for them, or that is a state secret of the narcos?
And don't start messing with the commenters, we are more than you talibanes, we can be right and wrong, hypocrites and sincere, and more, you poor little youses can only be right.

" Dog -napped " AND after frantically searching for for 24 hours, including hiring the dude that drives around with the speakers on top of his car BLARING the news all over town unitl EVERYONE knew , sure enough , I got the pleasure of handing 100 US$$ TO THE POLICE and stand there and watch them split it with the punk the took her. They thought they could breed the old spayed pooch and sell puppies !
