There are indictments against
Chapo in six federal districts. The feds
say they decided to prosecute Chapo in Brooklyn, with the assistance of Miami
federal prosecutors, determining the two offices working in conjunction would
bring the strongest case against Chapo.
Below is the Florida indictment. Notable is they are charging him with 5
counts and asking for a life sentence.

There are two other
co-defendants in the indictment. One is
Jorge Milton Cifuentes Villa. He is the
leader of the Colombian Cifuentes Villa drug organization.
It was the Sinaloa Cartel
connection to Cifuentes Villa, that authorities were able to connect Chapo's
father in law, Inés Coronel Barreras, father of Emma, as the connection or
liaison between the Colombians and Chapo. And according to the Florida indictment was one of Chapo's money launderers, funneling money into the United States.

It all started in Colombia
“Was it the DEA who located Coronel Barreras in Agua Prieta?” An intelligence agent of the United States, who requested anonymity, was asked.
“What I can say is that the government of the United States had time to investigate and follow the tracks of Coronel Barreras in Sinaloa, Durango, Sonora and South America”.
Pressuring him to explain further in the case of the father-in-law of the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, the agent specializing in Mexican drug trafficking explains that it all started at the beginning of 2012 with a DEA investigation focused on the Colombian Jorge Milton Cifuentes Villa.
According to DEA website, Cifuentes Villa is leader of an organization dedicated to traffic cocaine.
“Cifuentes’s organization amassed a great fortune in money and illicit properties, as one of the main providers of cocaine to the Sinaloa Cartel”, reads on a page of the DEA.
The American agent reveals that in several intelligence reports written by DEA about the Cifuentes Villa Organization, the name Coronel Barreras came up.
"He is identified as the contact person of El Chapo and the person in charge of the transportation of cocaine shipments that originated from several points of South America to Central America and México", he clarifies.
The U.S. was allowed to fortify extradition application:
This indictment will be
modified to expand charges. Mexico
allowed the United States to expand the scope of charges against El Chapo, by
adding charges to the original application for extradition. That action may be a direct result of the
U.S. case against Alfredo Beltrán Leyva
(El Mochomo), in which the U.S. drastically changed the scope of charges against
the defendant apart from the extradition application.
This is an unlawful action, extraditions are based on the charges
expressed within and approved by the Mexican government.
In Alfredo’s case, the
case itself was questionable, and seemingly thrown together as an afterthought. When he was ending his prison term in Mexico,
subsequent to his brother’s death, the U.S. became interested in his prosecution. There was no a mention of the man until that
time, not in the former indictments against the Beltrán Leyva Organization, or
in the testimony of witnesses such as the Flores twins. The indictment was a bare bones, boiler plate
type of document that evolved as time passed and after “witnesses” were assembled to
testify against Alfredo. Witnesses, who
readers will identify as heavy narco hitters and capos, such as Edgar “La
Barbie” Valdez, slated to give witness testimony in narco trials as part of his
deal cut with the U.S. Alfredo refused
to make a deal that included testifying against anyone.
This, accompanied by
the extradition approval documents translation errors from translators working on behalf of the Unites
States, has placed Alfredo’s case into a tentative state. It may work in his favor in sentencing. He is to be given an evidentiary hearing that should benefit Alfredo. Currently there are filings behind the
scenes, including that of the translation issue and a motion not to consider
conspiracy.
It appears, the U.S. is
taking no chances with the case of El Chapo.

ReplyDeleteI think that after Chapo is convicted in NY they will ask for consecutive sentencing or try to and then try him in another jurisdiction -- convict him there where the judge will be free to stack consecutive sentences on him. This will save a lot of taxpayer money and will put Chapo out of sight and out of mind. IMO
ReplyDeleteNews out Monday is that is what they want to do and only need the Flores' to testify. Everyone else confirmed liars with no actual facts like the Flores' and Zamabada's and Chapo's phone tapes ordering murders and what to do with the bodies.

DeleteWell articulated. It's definitely going to be a circus show. Tales of corrupt officials from Guzman as well as Colombian operatives within government . Expect a list of names from all sides of the fence to surface. Yet a fraction of this to be bleeped ( Classified) from the media. The United States has an objective to indict and not open Skeletons from within ( government).
ReplyDeleteMany rumors were at beginning of the drug war was an agreement from American officials to assist the Sinaloa cartel in exchange for the eradication of rival Zetas. There's a lot more to this than meets the eye. Don't be discouraged if truth is hidden .
He'll plead guilty, if he's smart, once he realizes the lenght and girth of the time being thrown at him.

If they knew they were on their way to something like Guantanamo they would think twice about some of their massacres. I don't have issues with trafficking drugs. Just quit with the torture and daily shooting and kidnapping. Go back to the older days of working with each other.

DeleteThe govt doesn't really need much to convict Chapo but they will make sure they get 17 guilty verdicts on this first indictment. The prosecutors will also bring up the fact many times to the jury that Chapo would have faced the death penalty on multiple murder charges but the murders and death penalty cases were taken off the table so he could be extradited. It is more gas to pour on the fire. He will call witnesses to prolong his trial but it will not matter, even on one conviction he is facing minimum a mandatory life sentence. The trial won't last longer then a few weeks but once they get him to ADX they can work to start stacking consecutive life sentences on him. He knows there are no deals, the US already gave him several and that was to take off the multiple death penalty cases he was facing. He will die in America as a convicted illegal criminal felon and will never physically alive step foot into Mexico ever again. He will be carried out the front doors of ADX in a compressed wooden coffin and deposited for his family to retrieve, if they want to pick up the garbage.

DeleteHis lawyers know they can't get a plea besides life in prison. That death penalty(ies) was the deal breaker. Imagine he would have also faced the death penalty in several other jurisdictions too.
DeleteHe was never going to face the death penalty. Mexico doesn't have the death penalty and like most countries that don't have the death penalty they wouldn't have agreed to extradite him unless the U.S. agreed to not seek the death penalty. That wasn't a deal they made with El Chapo's lawyers. It was simply part of the conditions for his extradition. That's standard procedure with extraditions. Doesn't matter if it's El Chapo or anyone else. So the U.S. hasn't given him any kind of deal. Never say never on a plea deal. He's still going to die in a U.S. prison cell. But that doesn't mean he can't still make a deal that benefits his family in some way.
DeleteFor @1:59, you might want to read and listen to the DoJ's press release and Mexico's agreement with the USA. They agreed to take off the death penalty in Chapo's situation because he was extradited for 2 active indictments. The other superseding indictments will come out now that he is here and the USA can and would have sought the death penalty. The total eradication of "ANY" death penalty case prior to extradition meaning he would not face death on the new upcoming indictments. Sorry Charlie, you are wrong, it was a plan and agreement to any upcoming and newer indictment otherwise once he was here the jurisdictions and federal government would have sought the death penalty in those other cases. Go back and do your research, that was one of the key items on the Mexican side and their agreement. International law is also clear about post extradition and indictment warrants.

ReplyDeleteWe must remember our Great Legal system. Innocent until proven guilty. We all know he is guilty, and he is a leader of the terrorist Drug Cartel. BUT.. unfortunately I dont think he will get a life sentence. With a powerful legal team, some key "snitching points" and weak witnesses. Don't be surprised if he gets 20 years with time credit.

He will have federally appointed attorney(s), or as others here have called them, ambulance chasers. Silly wabbit, this is the United States.

DeleteCanadiana they will throw the book at him and he will receive the harshest of all sentences. They will also try and get info from him but they really do not care at this point. They have enough for 1000's of years in life sentences. They would love for him to talk but again, they do not care. He no doubt will be at the mercy of the US so I am sure he will attempt safe haven for his young children and wife (if he was a man). His two sons however, will soon be with him when they are captured and can have a nice reunion at ADX even though they will never physically see one another ever again. ReplyDeleteSo is Chapo's wife Emma Coronel really the niece of the late Nacho Coronel and the daughter of Ines Coronel? Seems like it was reported years ago and many news outlets just ran with it and she's denied being a part of that family as well.
