Max the little looter brings some levity

Posted by DD republished from Mexico News Daily

Max and his loot
Viral stardom can be found in the strangest places. The latest star to rise to viral fame was photographed at the looting last week of a Chetumal supermarket, caught red-handed by the photographer with the loot held firmly — in its jaws.

And so began fame for Max, not necessarily a street dog, but one with some street smarts.

It was while the local supermarket Dunosusa was being looted in one of the many gas price riots throughout the country that the smallish dog seized the opportunity to nab a bag of chips, his favorite snack.

A photojournalist from a local news website captured the dog as it fled the scene of the crime, and the rest, as is wont to happen these days, was immediate internet history.

Max’s picture was shared on Facebook, where he was promptly nicknamed el perro saqueadorcito, or the little looter dog.

Because no internet story is over until all the angles are thoroughly scrutinized, Max’s family was soon identified and interviewed.

“Max has a home but he likes to go out on the streets nearby,” said proud owner Jimmy Sosa Casanova, who expressed astonishment over the power of social networks: the story of the little looter transcended the state of Quintana Roo and offered some levity in the midst of the tense days of protests gone violent.

“You don’t know the number of people that have sought us out because they want to know Max and give him gifts. We’re very happy,” said Sosa.

“The dog likes to clown around; he didn’t mind the sirens and people running around, and he got in the middle of the melee where he found a bag of Sabritas chips among the stuff thrown on the floor,” said the taxi driver and radio show host.

“We thank the whole country for the affection they have shown to our dog. I think he is now the dog of all Mexico.”

Most looters are not normally well regarded after the fact, but Max was rewarded by the very store he stole the chips from. Not only did he get a case of his favorite snack from Dunosusa, but a 25-kilogram bag of dog food, too.

A representative of the regional chain of supermarkets told the newspaper El Universal that they appreciated the good humor that Max brought during a difficult time.

While Max ought to be feeling good about the attention and gifts, he is looking good, too. Another gift was a free one-year membership to a local pet salon.

After the little looter received his first shower and haircut, Sosa exclaimed that everyone in his family was “very happy with his new image, they left him more handsome.”

    1. It's very OK to have - from time to time - such nice stories.

Sometimes I'm really tired of the same crap: either corrupted officials, or beheading/decapitations. It never ends and so easy to predict what will be the next. Depressing, because it never ends.

So, Anonymous at 9:30 PM, don't worry. Tomorrow you will get your beheading/decapitations. And after tomorrow too. And day after day, until the end of the year.

  21. @BB Readers: I have never shared comments that are deleted but I want to show you an example of the idiotic comments I deal with every day. You never see them because they get deleted. Remember these are in response to the "little looter" Max story;

    "Ur dog is fag"

"Well, the donal' dogg has finally came home, dragging behind the US for his master, shit being exposed by a former MI 6 brittish subject spy(name here) and David Korn of Mother Jones to go with the little looters chips"

"The worst part is that little doggie doo was looting so close to "the border", with Belize and Guatermala, but still, too close to the school of the amerikkkas and the kaibiles and the US bases in colombia, what if he's got a bomb in his belly, Or hairball? We need a congressional oversight committee to look into the matter...and 14 million dollars for expenses, "adjusted for inflation"..."

Some orange american orangutans would rather grab something else, hairier..."

  28. By how much did gas prices rise in Mexico can anyone tell me? Currently prices in Atlanta, GA are $2.29 USD/gallon but there was a time many years ago when the prices rised up to as much as $4.99 USD/gallon.

I just want to know how much the prices rose because Mexicans got really mad at the price increases and I want to have a good understanding of the Mexican economy and the Mexican people's tolerance for recessions and depressions.

    ReplyDelete
  29. In America gas prices once rose from $1.49/gallon to as much as $4.99/gallon in some places and there was no unrest or riots. How can Mexicans get mad over a 20% gas price increase? Are Mexicans really so poor that a 20% price increase would make them loot and riot in the streets?

Seems to me that Mexicans are very violent unstable people that love blaming their president and their government for all their problems. Don't they realize they are the problem? What kind of uncivilized group of people destroy businesses and riot on the streets for a 20% price increase?

Americans saw their gas prices increase by 300%+ in some areas a few years back and we were definitely unhappy but we didn't riot and burn our own cities to the ground. Mexicans need to calm down!

Then again Mexico is such a poor country that I'm guessing even a 20% price increase in gas would destroy a family's budget. I'm glad to be an American. Land of freedom and prosperity!

    1. @2:22 When the price of gasoline rose so dramatically several years ago in the US how many Americans worked all day and only earned enough money to buy one gallon of gas and didn't have enough left to buy a 1/2 gallon milk or a loaf of bread for their family?

You asked "Are Mexicans really so poor that a 20% price increase would make them loot and riot in the streets?" The answer to that is Yes. A little over 50% of the population lives below the poverty line. While they may not be well educated they are smart enough to know that the price of everything imported from the US (food, appliances, etc.) has already gone up in price because of the drop in value of the peso has dropped 25% in the last year (12% since Trumps election) and this gasoline price increase is not only going to cost them more when they buy gas for their car but the price of everything in the stores is likely to increase because of increased freight cost.

Right or wrong, they blame the government and it's policies for their falling further and further into increased poverty. Going to the streets is the only way they know to express their rage.

      Delete
    2. Excuse us here but the Mexican people are poor, and they don't have a raise increase in their pay checks, the cartels are also to blame for the increase of the gas price since they sell it in a black market type of shit, and as if you are not informed a lot of President and governmental people have been incarcerated for having ties with cartel just to make themselves richer. There's my 2 cents.

      Delete
    3. DD say no more, I agree, behind these price hikes is the shutting down of production of some of the estate producing wells and the submission of pemex to foreign demands to keep mexico refinery free, selling mexican oil at half price and buying expensive gas back from outside mexico also helps,
It is all the fault of the mexican. Government, if they don't know business other than selling cheap for kickbacks they should not be handling mexican businesses, much less state owned, mexicans do not sit on the "negociaciones"
2:22 it is easy not to protest and riot when you make $8.25 usd per hour and you pay $5,00 per gallon of gas,
--When you work 2.5 full days at minimum wage to pay for 1 gallon of gas, the shit gets harder and harder.
--Ministers, congressmen, senators get all the free gas vouchers they demand, that shit gets even harder and harder.
