Clandestino: Sinaloa Cartel Documentary by David Beriain

Original article available at DMAX
Translated by El Wachito

In Spain, the number 13 is the a number that represents bad luck and 18 represents the age when you become an adult. In El Salvador, these numbers are a synonym of death and violence. In our country, the number 701 does not represent anything. In the state of Sinaloa, Mexico, this number represents a symbol of support and admiration towards their "Mr" el 'Chapo' Guzman, who's fortune ranks him in the 701 place of the Forbes magazine.

The war between the Mexican Cartels has already left more deaths than the number of casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan together. In El Salvador, the murder rate is the same as the one in Iraq during the worst times of the conflict. Journalist David Beriain comes back to DMAX to disclose what, and who hides behind those casualties, that have made Central America one of the most dangerous regions of the planet.

Once again, the journalist David, will showcase from the monitors of DMAX the clandestine sites that only him is able to obtain access, which has become an ability that made him one of the most recognize journalist in the industry of the documentary journalism.

After impressing his spectators with 'Amazonas Clandestino' and with the first season of 'Clandestino', he has come back with five new documentary blocks of one hour each, divided in two thematic blocks that revolve around the most famous drug cartel of the world and the extreme violence of gangs. Two realities that the journalist will show us from first hand.

"Making 'El Cartel de Sinaloa' was a mayor challenge. We infiltrated the cartel in one of the most complicated moments, after the capture of "El Chapo" Guzman in the middle of a power struggle to succed him. It was a challenge to gain their trust in a moment where they didn't trust each other" explained the journalist Navarro. In regards to the episodes of the violence in El Salvador, Beriain assures that "Its one of the most impressive stories that we have had the privilege of tell. In a country of wonderful people, we tried to tell a story about the justice and vengeance. A story that I believe, will not let anyone down".

Michael Corleone: You all know Joey Zasa. He is, I admit, an impressive man. His picture is on the cover of the New York Times Magazine. He gets the Esquire Magazine award for the best dressed gangster. [the assembled Dons laugh] The newspapers praise him because he hires the blacks into his family, which shows he has a good heart. Who knows, maybe someday he will make all of you popular.

    1. True , but makes me laugh how these narco jrs try and act all tough. Snorting that garbage displays the jitters of these individuals , shaking and all for that fix. Showing vulnerability and stupidity because now your actions and comments are not merited by impaired judgement. Displaying weakness and carelessness to all to see. Idiots.
      Presentation is key to success.
If my son were acting as such would have not only scolded him but put him on the front lines to make him a man.

  13. if the government of Culiacan wants to make things more difficult for armed commandos to move around, first of all they should enforce a law where tinted windows are prohibited... I visited Culiacan recently and I notice several vehicles traveling together with tinted windows, many of them from luxury brands, such as mercedes benz, bmw and jeeps, then my cousin told me that if I saw an SUV with tinted windows, is better to move to the side because there might be 4 armed man inside.

Second of all, I asked my cousing, howcome people are able to get away with carrying frequency radios?, he then told me that if the mexican military sees people with frequency radios then you are in big trouble, and a lot of "punteros" are even raped by mexican marines if they get caught them with frequency radios... some of them are beaten also.

If the cartel caughts a Puntero sleeping while on watch, they will punish him by beating him with a stick... and you can see punteros in motorcycles or even the guy working at a taco stand could be a puntero.

But howcome the police and the federal officers dont arrest people with radios?, because they are scared. In Culiacan people respect people with luxury vehicles and cartel members, not because they deserve the respect but because they never know who they could be messing with, therefore, they are not willing to risk their lives for whatever the government pays them... while the Mexican Marines care less, because first of all, their family members live in another state and second of all, most military members come from poverty, they are younger, and they have a sense of brotherhood which allows them to fight together against the narcos because they know they have each others backs, while the cops and federal officers are often corrupted by cartels and betray each other.

Other point that I want to make clear, is that, during my last visit I had the opportunity to travel to a town near Cosala which is located on the outside of Culiacan, towards Durango, and I found that the living conditions of Mexican soldiers are terrible. The Mexican Marines were sleeping in camping tents, but not military type camping tents but civilian tents, which makes me wonder what happen to the Merida Initiave money? shouldnt that money be enough for Mexican soldiers to at least be issue military type tents?? Btw, it gets really cold in La Sierra.

whats with the old mustangs at minute 28?? lol, when I was there I saw a Mercedez Benz V8 turbo AMG CLS CLASS, and The BMW in minute 31 has a check engine light on... hahaha

overall, I enjoyed the documentary and I feel that they were able to discribe how they operate in Culiacan, however I hope that in the next episode they show how they move the drugs from CLN to the Border.

one thing that I would like to add is that in CLN people will take their rifles and guns to the parties, and their main concern is not protection, because people invited to the parties are people who they trust.. they do it because they enjoy showing off their rifles, and same with cars. Theres a road called "EL Sinaloa" where people drive their cars in an effort to show them off.. good documentary DMAX

    1. They tinted windows and luxury cars mean nothing. If it comes to the point they will start moving in older vehicle to attract less attention. In northern Tamaulipas some years back, seeing 20-30 vehicle convoys roll through the streets of the cities was ALMOST normal. The gvt has been targeting them really hard they now you don't see that type of stuff. They used old ass vehicle sometimes taxis too and smaller older cars. Only time you see the convoys is when it's about to go down. The power hasn't changed much, they still have the money and the firepower just they changed tactics to avoid drawing attention. If it comes to that point in Sinaloa the same will happen. Local authorities will do nothing that's for sure has to be military and don't doubt even some of them are in the payroll

    3. Bar coding on all the cars and trucks would keep many things on line, forgetabout tinted windas and sheeyet. Next is everybody better get their shit together, and carry IDs then stop everybody outside on the mountain or the street, they need their gas and ids or no service, we used to refuse services in governme t offices to people that had no voter registration AND stamps showing the citizen had been voting.
Of course if you try to vote these days even on the US, you may be confused with a criminal if you do not carry the right skin and your extreme right ID, or a NRA card will help...

  24. Its obvious in in the state of Sinaloa, the federal government exerts little control given how blatant CDS operates with guns everywhere.
The cartels are like warlords in a failed state.
Maybe at one time the PRI used to run things.
And given how dirty the Mexican government is, they naively think they can pull the strings and collect the bribes.
