Money laundering: From the Sinaloa Cartel to LA’s fashion district

Original article available at YouTube
Posted by El Wachito

In September 2014, more than 1,000 federal and local agents raided 75 different locations in Los Angeles’ fashion district. They seized around $90 million dollars, most of it in bulk cash, from the Sinaloa Cartel. Authorities claim it was the biggest money seizure in U.S. history. Correspondent Mike Kirsch examined the issue in this feature documentary for Americas Now.

    6. Thank you Wachito. You have to understand that Sinaloa isn't run by one person. Ay capos a lo pendejo. Cuando cae un sale otro, y otro y otro. It's a complicated structure that isn't easy to infuriate.

    7. @10:29 BB contributors have better things to do then confirming if a carrido band is going to get to sing for El Chapo in federal prison. I'll give you your answer right here: not a chance in hell. Where do you people come up with this stuff? El Chapo isn't in Puente Grande with the warden and guards under his thumb doing whatever he'd like. That's over. He's not in Mexico anymore. He won't be getting any special privileges. In fact, an inmate like him will get far fewer privileges than others. So please, don't waste BB's time asking really stupid questions like this. Thanks.

    11. 3:58 yep . He will be lucky to get a radio . Anybody he knows would bee a fool to show up to see him . Anybody he knows lives off illegal money and don't want to be looked at . I the usa you are supposed to account for ANY assets you have and how you got them . "Washed money" has a funny way of being noticed once the federal government starts looking at you . I was knew Chapo I certainly wouldn't visit him . Maybe Sean Penn and the soap actress .

  6. Well aeems like CCTV shot themselves in the foot by asking uncomfortable questions (will Chapos arrest make a dent in the flow of drugs?). This means they and their journalists will be barred from any official interaction with public officials and excluded from the flow of carefully managed leaks with which officiala keep journalists alive.

  7. The money seized was not chump change. Definitely a blow to the cartel. But it's a loss which cartels have. Especially the Sinaloa.
They took a hit but will not hurt them.
Curious as to when this report ( raid) occurred?
    Good informative piece Borderland beat.
And to think how many more lucrative ways to launder money exists.
Guess one has to be clever to operate at such levels.

  8. It is stupid to think that the arrest of El Chapo will not change things.

The cartels were allowed to grow so much that's why when a boss goes down another one is ready to take over. But eventually they will suffer.

    1. No change in stemming flow of narcotics with chapos arrest and extradition. Yes there are key figures to replace. Moreover infighting and power struggles do occur like any company. Governments are involved however to make the fortunes. Let's not expect this to ever end. Just new players where one falls.

  20. Looks ominous for Mexico's economy! In Mexico foreign investors hold around $100 billion of the country’s local-currency government debt, the most for any emerging market economy. That’s almost 20 times what it was 20 years ago. They also hold billions of euros worth of corporate bonds, which are also showing signs of strain, prompting some Mexican business leaders to call for “new programs” to be implemented before the situation causes “a large-scale crisis” among Mexican companies.
The most ominous sign yet came last week when Bloomberg reported sources saying that the Bank of Mexico (or Banxico, as it is referred to) had sought a swap line from the Federal Reserve in case of “liquidity problems,” which immediately triggered furious denials from Banxico. “I can say clearly and unequivocally that we are not in the process of asking for any credit line from any authority,” said the central bank’s governor, Agustin Carstens, who has postponed by six months his departure from the bank, initially scheduled for May.
Basically, Mexico's central bank is asking the American Federal Reserve for a line of credit! Swap pesos for American $$$$. However, with the risk of a peso collapse how many US$ per peso would the FEd bank give, if any!

    2. I am not an economist and don't know how international money transactions work, but given what little I understand..."Could a "creative" deal be struck for the devalued Mexican peso pay for Trump's wall?"

I understand that it would be a "smoke and mirrors" operation to save face for Mexico and maybe keep it from collapsing into total chaos.... including a violent revolution.

Obviously cartels are winning this "war". Had this been a real "war" the USA would of pulled out a long time ago. It's time to let mexico take care of itself, withdraw the troops, shut down the DEA and put the money I to education and infrastructure. Drugs do the job of population control for the bottom third of our citizens.

    1. The war on drugs benefit all the warriors on it for their high salaries, it helps trim the competition, imprison the criminals burros y mulas that move stuff into the US, helps identify the bigger capos that rob the real owners of the business of their profits, recovers a lot of bounty for the warriors to split to have nice vacations and christmasses, helps keep the money coming to the real offshoring vulture capitalistas...
--No way is there anybody ending the "war for profit on drugs"
