Ensenada: 4 Bodies discovered on the highway
I struggle to write these "headlines" sometimes. How can I convey what happened, without sensationalism, but without bland casualness, similar to American local news anchors, who discuss atrocities, degradation with the conviction of discussing office gossip?
They are embarrassed, uncomfortable, bothered only by the intrusion into their other stories, who don't involve brutality, wrenching violence.
So, I go for a balance. Try to make it up in the article. But, I don't always feel one. I wonder who cares? And how do I care? Do I write that these can break me, and beat me with the relentlessness....the cruel realities of violence?
I know the why's, the how's, the players, the victims, and it doesn't change that for me.
There are two realties, both cruel, both cut me, one that I am saddened and broken by violence, and two, that I know it won't change, and I know why it happens, and why it has to happen.
Let me straighten myself out here, wash my face, my hands, for I am in the abyss. Four bodies of unknown individuals were discovered at dawn in Ensenada, in an area known as "Las Mallas De Garcia", in the Elijido Jaramillio location. They have bullet wounds to the head. They are wearing street clothes, and appear to have had they're hands tied, bound, before being thrown on a dirt road.
The killings are done by men who have done them before, and will again. They will also meet a similar fate, very few who bind hands, and carry corpses, and the still living dead, end up as old men, who remember the killings they did as young men. There is symmetry in death, in killings. It's not karma, or at least I don't believe in it. It's simply that blood washed with blood, will never wash out.
The killings are doubtless linked to retail drug traffickers disputes for control of territory, routes, plazas, areas of influence. The men will be locals of Baja, Sinaloa, and maybe Guerrero, Jalisco. The authorities won't announce any arrests, they will be examined, exhumed, buried.
Look at the picture, look at the men, look at their lifeless bodies. Let the images stay with you, as you work, drink, run, dance. Let them enter into your dreams, as they have mine, let the silence of the dead consume you with it's cries.
The morning fog not yet lifted, it looms over the scene, a hauntingly cruel portrait of a rural land, and the savagery of men who walk in it.
AFN Tijuana
Just write the article bro. I honestly couldn't read it. I know everyone is going to give me crap but this isn't a novel it's a news article
ReplyDeleteYa it's ridiculous bruh I agree. We don't need a poetic description of these unknown people. Journalism on this site should be about listing the facts or even speculation into who they are or what they did. Everybody who reads bb is aware of what's going on in Mexico/Latin America, we don't need it made poetic. Obviously the author has some personal issues but they shouldn't be included in a story.
DeleteNot trying to be a dick or prevent future guest reports from posting articles. The poetic paragraphs don't do anything but irritate most people that want the story, not the personal struggles of the author. I just skip them most of the time.
Again nothing against the op, you obviously have some talent in story telling but imo it's the wrong place for it. Most people just want facts. Hell, even speculation is valued but trying to turn these events into a poetic piece just makes people not want to even read it.
Maybe I'm one of the few that finds it unwarranted so I can only speak for myself
4:36 move to another sight plain & simple...
DeleteI completely agree with the comment above! Just write the news and tell us what happened. No need to try so hard.
DeleteJackasses....how bout not reading it if you don't like it...adding a bit of humanity to inhumane acts through a bit of poetic narrative is just a different way of delivering news of the incident. I'm sure we have read 100 times a story about Mexico " 4 bodies dumped on the side of the road in ____ with bullets to the head and signs of torture "......so shut up and letem write how they want or step up and write it yourself
DeleteYup I agree, if you don't like J's writing style don't read his/her articles. Don't complain about something that free, its ridiculous to do so when offering nothing yourself.
DeleteYou get used to another writing style, but if it is too much, move on and thanks for coming.
DeleteIt's not the writers fault,it's BB! I really don't care or give a shit if he's poetic or not,I'm like what ever! Read or not, that's up to u
DeleteGreat fuckin article! With BB covering only one issue I think it is really great that the hell in Mex is described from as many angels as possible.
DeleteTo all those dickhead who have never been touched by the violence and are not interested in understanding those touched by it just go look at the pictures at the Blog Del Narco. If you dont understand spanish: dont worry the 'facts' are always the same so you can make em up yourselves!

Thank you for a very well thought out and masterfully written report. ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ
Delete2deep4me, but in all seriousness it is awful what violence has done to my beautiful country. Drug trafficking will never stop but i have hope peace will once again be achieved with a treaty among cartels or if they unite into one which i see unlikey. I pray that at LEAST peace will be restored. Amado was a necessary evil and it sickens me to realise it.
ReplyDeleteNever mind the violence,
Deletefind the messengers that have made violence the socialost patrimony of the poor and the broke assed, they always have "private security" ready, just in case...
So we writing poems now?
ReplyDeleteI was there in the 70's. There were small colonias, with well kept fields in little valleys surrounded by the desert scrub. The people were very kind and would share some of the best food i have ever tasted. They were poor, but rich in my eyes.
DeleteYou can keep your rap, narcocorridos, i'll take the poetry.
Well said 7:51 we all have hearts and feel pain ! And some of us love the old Mexico before this $hit started.
Delete'Zactly! Baja is a willy, willy scay-wee place. Your mother would be calling for a novena. Leave it all to those of us who love it & nuestra compadres que le compartieron con nosotros. No kooks.
Delete@7:41 I was there in the 80s and during that decade you noticed the change coming. Reeeal tragic what has become of this once so wonderfull place called Meejico.
DeleteTranslated from AFN, Agencia Fronteriza de Noticias, I don't know if J is the original writer or if he added something on the translation.
DeleteBut it is not bad enough to excite so much your bajos instintos
@6:48 p.m youre an idiot! These are not discarded bags of trash but human beings that were murdered! Someones son or daughter brother or sister or father or mother! Have some compassion and let them write how they see fit!😠
DeleteThis article is not done by a reporter, rather an aspiring poet....
ReplyDeleteNo sean prosaicos, cual pinchi "poem".
DeleteJust a report full of feelings.
You ain'ever seen a POEM...
That happened in san quintin, about an 1 hr aeay i think, its ensenada county thou...ensenada has the biggest county in the world!
ReplyDeleteCan you start including "these tragedies occured in the ghettos of" these cry babies piss me off
Delete11:44 can we use "Borghatta" instead?
DeleteSouns like more classy,
But the business is on more select suburbs, where money IS.
11:44 i see, you can start "the Piojoso Del Ghetto Blues"
Deletegiven your experiences.
Whoever you are, you're a great writer. Much respect and admiration
ReplyDeleteYes a great style of writing and it rips me apart to see what happens in Mexico.such a nice Country with so much violence.
ReplyDeleteAlli en el puerto todavia circula los incognitos pesados del Mayel Higuera.
ReplyDeleteFor those complaining about this article, I can only hope you find yourself one day, as much as this writer has.
ReplyDeleteThis writer speaks for the majority of us, who read these articles in a mundane despair.
I for one appreciate this type of journalism. It helps remind us that we are human, despite what the world has come to.
Rene 00 threatens Mexican marines and military and federales that his people will start killing them all in cabo san lucas if they dont release" el babay" things are heating un in cabo
ReplyDeleteBabay has gone to Mexico...he is out of the hands of local authorities.
DeleteCjng ain't no joke, but nobody can go against the government and win, NOBODY. La familia michoacana tried and they sent 1000's of federales and soldiers to catch and kill them. That was also Pablo Escobar's down fall
DeleteRene oo isnt cjng
DeleteI speak for myself, if the writer knows who are the murdered, the murderers and the reasons why this halpened, it would help his feelings more than writing dramas about it,
ReplyDeleteReporters and commenters personal feelings do matter OK,
but they should not be the reason of our endeavours.
I do not like 4 more murders on top of the past more than 200 already reported. But that will go on as long as the police and military commanders and the politicians keep pleading themselves not guilty for reasons of incompetence, greed, insanity, or impotence...
I would take one of these motherfackers to be tried for things to improve a little bit, just warn them the next one will be paid by the area police commander and two of his favorite lieutenants,
I love this writers style, please don't change for a few ignorant people, keep up the great work.
ReplyDelete4:31 just because nothing else makes you cry anymore?
DeleteNot even a lack of soap?
Pretty much but if you aren't involved in the drug business you should be OK.
ReplyDeleteAs we all know that is not always the case unfortunately.
Well written. Thank you
ReplyDeleteTo the writer,
ReplyDeleteGreat job. Often these news stories just become about numbers or faceless groups of thugs. One side cheering for the death of the other.
Let one death continue to be a tragedy. Otherwise it's just statistics.
I love to read the publishers articles..We become numb to the violence..he brings us back to reality.. Keep up the good writing!
ReplyDeleteGood work J. Disregard the cynics.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note I'd like 2 add that I just willingly wasted your tax dollars posting this. Lol.
When they said repent repent I wonder what they meant. - Leonard Cohen.
- Sol Prendido
What tax dollars are you talking about Sol? Obviously all the criticism is starting to get under your skin; your recent comments have more to do with your concern over how they are received than the article they refer to.
Delete10:11 get em lol
Delete10:11 don't feed the troll.
ReplyDeleteAny actual, facts about these killings near Ensenada? Any updates?
ReplyDeleteShould be OK huh? WTF u got that from USA Today or what? Or are you e.g. implying that auto-defensas are also 'involved' in anything more than protecting themselves?
ReplyDeleteChivas sending you un grande abrazo
ReplyDeleteHas anyone on here heard of Felix Grizzaffi?
ReplyDeletebruddah, the ones complaining never passed their high school remedial reading class. that's why they dont understand it! keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteHow I wish I could sting so many asses as J has done,
DeleteBut no, nobody pays me any attention.
The art of writing is extremely difficult. You want to draw a picture in the mind of the readers, the problem is, most of today's millennial readers are too stupid to know how to read in the first place. They don't understand, or want to understand, what REAL pain and suffering is going on. They just live for right now, "screw tomorrow I'll deal with it then". Keep writing any way that you want to and stay safe.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Southern California Surfer. I have my Global/Sentri and travel to Baja ALL of the time solo to surf. Sleep in local Motels in Tijuana, Rosarito & Ensenada. You can without a doubt avoid the violence. Pay to play, these guys were probably dirty in some fashion.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what pays your bills, "southern california surfer"
DeleteI don't believe Nat Geo or restaurant rating do...
You wouldn't believe me If I told you!!! It is just my opinion that having gone to TJ at least 5 times a week since the late 1980's that "trouble can be avoided. You pay to play in Mexico "NARCO" world of street politics....
DeleteSimple, they played with fire n they got burned. That's my mentality n I sleep comfortable.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to see feelings in the articles. This is a blog, not a news site. The government works and reports on facts. Facts are nothing but cold figures. I preferred the human touch. Ignore the complainers, they obviously have no sympathy and can not relate to the anguish of another human being.
ReplyDelete@ 4:44 AM I merely pointing out the obvious fact that if you live in Mexico and get involved with drug trafficking the odds of you dying a violent death increase significantly.
ReplyDeleteThe only crime in Mexico is the gringos buying all the land then renting them for a Arm and a leg ...gone are the days where i stay in a condo for 20 a night
ReplyDelete
