Subject Matter: Shoot out in Cancun tourist district

A fierce shootout was registered in the commercial centre of Culiacan on Avenue Tulum, Coba and Bonampak up to the Plaza del Toros, in the Premier block of the city of Cancun, in which a confrontation between elements of the Army and State Police chased a group of sicarios.
In the first version of events, the confrontation between the armed groups happened at a place close to the bus station and the shootout continued into the restaurant zone and bars that ended at the plaza del toros.
The government of Quintana Roo has not confirmed the number of injured after the gun battle, but it is known that there are four people with gunshot injuries and one death.
Parts of the city centre are now closed, with police mobilized which has generated a climate of tension in the area. There were four detainees, all of whom were injured and were hospitalized, while others were detained by the Ministerial authority.
According to the residents testimony, gun shots were heard outside a shopping centre located on Tulum Avenue, at the top of Glorieta de las Estrellas and Lasa Caracoles, popularly known as Glorieta del Ceviche, in the centre of the city.
There were also detonations in the kiwi market, a few meters from the Glorieta and in front of the Municipal palace, very close to the same area.
The shooting spread to Nader Avenue, parallel to Tulum Avenue, where it is presumed that some of those implicated were injured.
The government of Quintana Roo issued a brief message: " The situation in Cancun is under control, after the arrest of a group of people.
Officially it was reported that it was the execution of a ministerial action, that provoked the chase and subsequent gun battle.
Some inhabitants reports gunfire at Plaza Las Avenidas, located in the Xcaret and Coba Avenues.

DeleteMy wife nd I were in Cancun during this shoot out. We were in the hotel zone. I have to say that it was a bit scary since we had planned to go to the casino that night which was right close to the events happening, but changed our minds at the last minute. I also have to say seeing the police presents on the beach right after gave us a sense of security. There are mafia crimes happening all over the states and much worse than what went on down there that night. We're going back this year for 3 months. I'm not saying it's for everyone, but I'm not going to hide away every time something like this happens. I lived in Germany for 4 years and terrorism there is much more real than Mexico. I fear many cities in USA more than I do Cancun.

After all the only ones that benefit from the "industry" are the well to do, the well connected and the so called government.
A lot of people earn their living in those places and they are the ones who really suffer when the tourists are gone.

Moreover, if anyone has been paying attention. Mexico has applied legal assistance for its undocumented citizens in the US. In other words trying to protect its economy not its citizens.
Funny how the Mexican government can't protect citizens within. Rather protect those abroad.

Look at all those border like Laredo , Matamoros, Reynosa ect. Shops of all those tourists destinations were turned into ghost towns. Where revenue from tourists have become bleak. This is due to the violence and extortion from criminals.

DeleteYou hit on an important point here, drug money is invested into legal business to launder, on which tax is then paid into the Mexican treasury. So in some ways while drug money is considered evil, it does contribute to the Mexican GDP. Part of the problem in Quintana Roo is that while it was Zeta only turf at the height of their power they ar now fighting CdG and CJNG for control. CDs also have presence there.

DeleteI was in Cancun back in spring break of 2007. I had a great time with the exception of 3 incidents. 1 was introuduced to a guy who had been deported but had grown up in Pacoima Ca. He was a cholo and we had been introduced to him by one of the bar employees after we told him we were from L.A. he started rubbing me the wrong way when he kept insisting we go hang out to his house and call some girlfriends of his. My friend, being somewhat Naive was up for it, but I didn't trust him. We ended up losing him and moving on. The 2nd incident was with a gringo, he kept messing with my buddy until I told him to chill out. The Gringo tried to get brave until I told him we could fight, I didn't care because I could speak Spanish and talk my way out of jail. I told him I'd put the blame on him and they would believe me over him because I was Mexican. Fortunately it worked and he left is alone. The last incident ironically occurred with a local and a police officer. A drunk local decided to take a piss on my leg as we were riding on the bus. When I realized what was happening, I swung the guy around and ended up choking him with both hands on the seat all the way in the back of the bus. The bus driver ended up stopping in front of the police. I explained to the police officedr what had happened and the officer touches the piss, smells it and confirms it was urine and decides to put us both on the paddy wagon. I argued my case until we settled on 50 bucks. The local got slapped around and taken in. Other then those 3 incidents, we had a blast.

DeleteYour first incident was similar to mine. We we approached by a "bar guide" in the Zona Roja in Tijuana who promised us dope and some hot chicas. I smelled a setup but my stupid friend was all for it. I saved his life but got grief in return.
