"Russian Mike" fighting extradition in El Chapo case

Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat  Journal News AP

A Canadian known as "Russian Mike" who has been charged in the drug trafficking case involving notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman sought Thursday to block his extradition to the U.S. from the Caribbean.

Mykhaylo Koretskyy, who was born in Ukraine, appeared before a three-judge panel at an extradition hearing on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao, where he was arrested earlier this year after arriving on a flight from Canada. It was a continuation of a hearing that began Tuesday.

Koretskyy, 43, has been indicted in federal court in New York on charges that include conspiracy to import cocaine. U.S. court records list him among the defendants in the case that includes Guzman and say he also goes by the nickname "Cobra."

The indictment, unsealed when he was arrested in January, alleges he took part in a drug smuggling conspiracy from 2008 to 2014, but does not go into detail about any connection to Guzman, who was turned over to U.S. authorities in 2017.

Guzman has pleaded not guilty to charges that his Sinaloa Cartel laundered billions of dollars and oversaw a campaign of murders and kidnappings.

Koretskyy was arrested upon arriving in Curacao with his family and has been in custody ever since. The island, one of the countries that make up the Kingdom of the Netherlands, has an extradition treaty with the U.S. but a decision on whether to send him to New York is not expected for several weeks.

Jeffrey Lichtman, a lawyer for Koretskyy, said the defense is challenging the extradition in part because the U.S. government waited so long to seek his arrest on a grand jury indictment issued in 2014 despite the fact that authorities knew where he lived in Toronto. He said the delay will make it harder to locate witnesses and mount a defense. (note: Litchman was one of the Chapo legal “dream team” until the gov threatened to challenge attorney pay as unclean money, read here http://www.borderlandbeat.com/2017/08/us-gov-to-el-chapos-legal-dream-team-no.html)

"He wasn't hiding. He was in plain sight," said the New York-based Lichtman. "How do you defense yourself after all these years?"

The lawyer said he is also prepared for the next step if the judges in Curacao rule against Koretskyy. "If he is extradited and brought back to the U.S., we are prepared to try his case.

The indictment below, unsealed when he was arrested in January, alleges he took part in a drug smuggling conspiracy from 2008 to 2014, but does not go into detail about any connection to Guzman, who was turned over to U.S. authorities in 2017.

    3. Yes, I know drugs and politics have a connection and yes, the CIA and the DEA do look at this site quite frequently. However, the Russians and Chinese are most likely NOT trying to infiltrate CJNG to "kill" Americans or get "revenge" against Americans. To make MONEY? Hell yeah, but nothing more.

I know that Mencho isn't sitting around thinking about and wanting to be a terrorist on top of a drug dealer. Definitely not.

As far as what Millie (or his brother or whoever) said in the other post about Lalo, this anonymous poster stated that the Chinese are pumping fentanyl into the USA. Thats wrong my friend, the Chinese are selling things that are being bought by the cartels. Its about money.

THERE IS NO RUSSIAN, CHINESE AND CJNG CONSPIRACY. We must prevent the fake news people....

  5. It sounds like he tried to fly the coop a little late. He should have 'escaped' back to Russia if he knew he was in trouble but with the Ukraine/Russia debacle, maybe hes not welcome there. It would be nice to see some deep state journalism on these jokers but good journalists keep ending up dead!

    1. 5:59 looks like only non-mexicans can have opinions IF they have the money to back them up and if they are not some other minority that can go back to their real country SH voluntarily or get deported as soon as the laws get passed

  12. 5:59 Not sure what you are saying . Pretty sure you don't either . New laws cant be applied to old offences . The it is expostfacto . Its like if they passed the death penaty law for running stop signs . They can only qualify the offenders that offended after the law went into effect. I think deportation laws haven't changed for a long long time . As a US born white American I am pretty sure under the right circumstances , I could be sued for my citizenship and possibly deported if anybody would take me .
