Martha Erika Alonso, a
senior opposition figure and governor of the state of Puebla, died with Rafael
Moreno, a senator and former Puebla governor, when their Agusta helicopter came
down on Monday afternoon shortly after take-off, the government said.
Security Minister
Alfonso Durazo said the privately owned helicopter was bound for Mexico City
and crashed after suffering an unspecified failure in the town of Santa Maria
Coronango, about three nautical miles from Puebla airport.
“At this point, there’s
no evidence that could lead us to conclude that the cause was not related to
how the (helicopter) was functioning,” Durazo told a news conference.
Alongside the
politicians were Captain Roberto Cope and first officer Marco Antonio Tavera,
and it is presumed there was a fifth passenger, Durazo said, without giving
more details.
President Andres Manuel
Lopez Obrador said on Twitter that his government would investigate the
accident. Durazo said that the authorities had been in touch with the
helicopter and engine manufacturers, who will be at the scene on Tuesday.
“We will act with total
transparency,” he said.
Television images
showed the remains of an aircraft in flames, a plume of smoke and people
inspecting the scene.

DeleteHelicopter and small plane accidents in Mexico are never accidents. There is a long history, including the deaths of not one but two Ministers of the Interior in the space of a few years. ReplyDeleteThe symptoms and clues are too eerie to ignore. Temperature, humidity, time (distance from the airport). This is a textbook scenario for the effects of failure to heat the carburetor. It ices up and the engine goes full stall with no warning symptoms. I am FAA PMA certified and it will be a gruesome wait until an investigation is completed. An ice up happens so fast there is little time to reach the preheat lever.

Well, Mr. 'FAA PMA certified' (no such rating), the Agusta helicopter has NO carburetor. Ever heard of a Turbine engine?

ReplyDeleteIn the 1980s, I was in Mexico City when the prominent and influential journalist, Manuel Buendia was killed, then, I remember for a time, when this fellow Barrios was mayor of Juarez and NOT from him but there were other incidences then, some directed against him. It certainly makes one wonder what is going on and why it has gone on for so long. It's incredible to see this from us here in the USA though, we had similar sorts in the 1960s apparently.

Delete12:44 . . . Wha, too much Christmas eggnog? Helicopter was an Agusta Westland AW109, which is very advanced and most definitely does not have carbureators. It's a twin turbine beast capable of all-weather flight, with full de-icing systems. This was a case of sabotage, plain and simple. AMLO has to be given credit for inviting the NTSB folks out - I'll be curious to see how much leeway they're given.
