Bar Massacre in Playa del Carmen kills 7

Chivis Martinez and Mica for Borderland Beat- republished and translated from Noticaribe

Sicarios opened fire with long weapons in the bar "Las Virginias" of Villas del Sol, leaving seven dead.

It happened at eight o'clock at night when two gunmen burst into the place, located at the corner of Avenida Gavilanes (CTM Extension) with Pavo Real, in the second park of Villas del Sol, when sicarios opened fire with long weapons in the bar "Las Virginias" of Villas del Sol, leaving seven dead.

According to witnesses, volley blasts were heard, followed by individual shots, then, they entered a vehicle that was waiting for them outside the premises and they escaped with an unknown destination.

The attack sowed panic in the area, being in close proximity to mechanical games installed in an adjoining property Chedraui supermarket.

Municipal Police arrived at the scene, and state police  surrounded the zone, while a growing group of curious bystanders, more than 200 people, observed what had  happened.

Three ambulances arrived, transporting one seriously injured, who died shortly after,  while the paramedics of the others attended to people.

It is indicated that six died on the spot and one more on the way or upon arrival at the hospital.

    11. 12:01, considering Afganistan has a lower homicide rate than Mexico, it would likely be the safer choice.

    12. That didn't happen in the tourist section, it happened farthest you can go from the ocean.

    13. If you are not involved in buying, selling, transporting you have better chances of surviving in playa del carmen than attending school in the US

    4. Playa is a lot smaller than nyc...and is primarily a tourist town... nyc is a poor comparison to a place like playa...maybe compare it to a small beach resort in Florida...

  4. People killed in bars are usually drud sellers and the competition goes and shoot them down. Happens a lot in Tijuana and in this area where the 7 were killed

  7. When people like this are shot in a bar or club are these individuals actually the targets and shot because of their involvement with the cartels or the drug trade and are rivals or did something wrong?

Or are these individuals just innocent victims who happened to be at the wrong place at the right (or wrong) time, and the shooting was just to make a statement or to instill fear on the part of whoever conducted the shooting and or ordered it?

  13. Cancun/Playa Del Carmen has been a stronghold of the Golf cartel and zetas when they were together 20 years ago.. Governor Villanueva on the take.. Zetas broke off from Golfos then caused riff in the territory but had truce not to cause shit/violence in tourist zones cuz that is a huge cash cow for the region and government. Sinaloa cartel muscled into Cancun and playa Del Carmen years ago with the help of local govt. Golfos, zetas, Sinaloa, had an extremely tense presence in Cancun all the way to Tulum in the last decade. Only in the last couple years has things escalated to almost all out turf war with Jalisco cartel muscling in the region. Needless to say, provincial and local municipalities have been corrupted for this to happen...I won’t say more on this. If you’re a tourist visiting the area, I advise you to stay and enjoy the beauty of Cancun and the Mayan riviera on your resort. Don’t venture out to nightclubs and bars at night.. you WILL get caught in the crossfire of warring cartel members..I guarantee you that. So sad that this is such a beautiful part of the world being ruined by the almighty drug selling turf war greed and extortioning money from honest working locals. So sad...

  15. 9 km from Fifth Avenue in the Tourist Zone
No self respecting tourist would find themselves in this trashy bar .
In other news, 13 people were killed at a popular bar in Thousand Oaks CA, a bucolic suburb of Los Angeles, on Nov 7, 2018.
Lots of other murders since then...

  16. Just a curious question for those who may know the answer...What keeps the bad guys from hiding out in a resort hotel and more/other bad guys from attacking them there? We hear all the time, "just stay on the resort and you'll be OK"

    1. Great question.... most cartel members that get killed in resort towns such as Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum are street-level drug dealers/extortionists. Rival cartel members will get word that so and so are all together drinking late night in this bar or peddling dope in front of this nightclub which is in disputes with other cartels for turf. They go gather up their Ak-47s or high powered guns in a group then come back to light up the place just to get those 3-4 guys or whoever is with them. You’re a tourist drinking in that bar (even if it’s off the beaten path), or in a popular nightclub in Cancun, they won’t think twice to shoot through 50 guys (tourists included) just to kill those 3-4 guys.. Your question about staying in the resort, cartel thugs are almost very never likely to stay in resorts that tourists are at.. they can’t afford them. If so, they are there with their wives and kids or girlfriends and very low key. Normally cartel jefes will stay at high end resorts and you would never know who they are even if you were suntanning beside them by the pool. If there is a hit there, it won’t be a sloppy hit.. it will be very targeted and professional hit..(no bullets flying all over the place).. Same as dealers that have been killed in beachfronts (Cancun especially) in turf disputes, there hasn’t been any crazy shootings..just your typical walk up to him and shoot him in the head. But don’t be too comfortable on a Cancun beach, cuz a stray bullet might get you.. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened yet to tourists. But it will... unreal how this country has become.

  17. When i visited Cancun over 10 years ago i asked a tatoo shop guy on the main strip how they kept the police away because they were selling weed. They said they just paid the police 2000$ a year to leave them alone. The police ALWAYS are directly profiting from the drug trade in Mexico. In the US the police directly profit from the drug trade by seizing property and keeping the proceeds.
