El Chapo Trial: “I think he’s guilty. There’s many, many horrendous (things), that he did" says 'Narcos' actor

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat from Daily News-thank you Jose G

JMO: The actor should have been kept away from the trial, it is a circus enough, his giving a presser on the courthouse steps says it all.  Regarding Chapo not testifying—he will live with regret.  He will never leave prison with a beating heart, so why not give him his day to say what he wishes?  He would lose nothing and perhaps feel satisfied he was able to tell his story.

The El Chapo trial got a fix of star power Monday when the actor who plays the drug lord in the Netflix hit “Narcos: Mexico” made a surprise courtroom cameo.

Actor Alejandro Edda arrived before 6 a.m. to score one of the limited seats inside the courtroom gallery for the drug trafficking trial now in its eleventh week in Brooklyn Federal Court.
A beaming smile spread across Chapo’s face when he entered the courtroom and spotted the Hollywood hunk after getting a heads-up from his lawyers.

“My heart was pumping fast,” Edda told reporters of the moment he locked eyes with the notorious narco. “My hands were sweaty.”

The actor, 34, greeted Chapo’s defense team and later said it was “surreal” to spend the morning so close to the real-life kingpin he portrays for the TV drama also starring Diego Luna and Michael Peña.

During the mid-morning break, Edda was introduced to Chapo’s wife Emma Coronel Aispuro in the hallway. They greeted one another with a kiss on the cheek.

As he left the courthouse for the subsequent lunch break, Edda said he believes Chapo should be convicted.

“I think he’s guilty. There’s many, many things, horrendous (things), that he did. I’m not a judge. I'm not a lawyer. I don't know what's going to be the weight on him for this. The only sad part is that I know that he’s not the only one...There’s many bad guys around us,” Edda told reporters.

He said just seeing Chapo in the flesh was enough to send a shiver down his spine.

“He looked at me, waved at me. I was shaking in a way. Inside, I didn’t know what to do. I just paid him my respect, through the distance. It was a surreal moment, I have to be honest, looking at his eyes,” the actor said.

“It’s the guy who everybody talks about doing all these things,” he continued. “This guy’s the leader of a big …cartel … and, having him that close, it shook me. I’m intimidated by it.”

Edda said it would be “amazing” if El Chapo decides to testify in his own defense.

Chapo, whose real name is Joaquín Guzmán Loera, has pleaded not guilty to more than a dozen charges of drug trafficking, money laundering, conspiracy and illegal firearms.

He faces up to life in prison if convicted of running the Sinaloa Cartel.

Coronel, 29, claimed during a Telemundo interview last month that she hasn’t watched any TV shows or movies depicting Chapo’s life. She then said he might be interested in a project after the trial.

  1. I think it's more of what the prosecutors would have asked him...maybe he didn't wanna deal with that.

I was reading Mica's live updates, and wondered why no one paid the lawyers? Last month his wife said she has legal income from an inheritance. Why isn't her money accepted?

I don't want to be unfair to Chapo's lawyers, but I wish he would have gotten a better defense. 30 minutes? Is that enough to cast doubt on jurors? They didn't challenge anything (besides Jorge's testimony).

    1. I have written MANY times why. The money has to be proven clean. He had only one payment from friends whose money was clean, but after the initial large payment they said they could do no more.

The atty's must rely on taxpayers to pay the bill. But the gov says they will fight it

    4. 9:23 Thanks for the clarification Chivis. I thought she could pay for it. I hope the govt doesn't give OUR taxes to his defense (que no defendieron ni m.....). Because they're probably looking for millions of dollars. Not fair for us. Unos $100 pa cada uno, quizas si. Pero millones no.

    6. Taxpayers...yes of course, what did you expect?
Begging for his extradition since years and and then refusing to pay for the show???

    7. If taxpayers pay for his defense that is going to be pretty horrible. These were high priced defense attorneys. Not public defenders. If he couldn't afford his own lawyers he should have been appointed public defenders. I guess one last screw you to society by El Chapo before he heads to Supermax for the rest of his life.

    8. @12:16 I didn't beg for his extradition nor "the show". I have hope the govt won't pay the lawyers millions of dollars. As a matter of fact, I don't think the govt will give in to their price. If they get OUR tax money, it'll be considerably less than what they expect.

    9. I am actually surprised no eccentric millionaire has paid it for him. It reminds me of the anonymous person who paid the $1M bond on Jenni Rivera's ex who was accused of rape.

    10. Did you guys catch the exchange between Balarezo and Alan Feuer? Balarezo defended himself saying the cross examination was part of the defense, also asked Alan to tell him how to do his job lol

    1. Agree.
His role as an actor should remain professional and not judgmental. This opinion will be met with reprisals from all points of views. Added with those who may want to harm him for his statement.

Can assure this will alter his lifestyle. In one way or another.

  6. I guess it really doesn't matter. Everyone including himself knows Chapo was guilty. Once extradited, there was no way he was ever gonna leave. They couldve gotten some experts to testify, knowing they'd get money on the back end via books movies etc...but the gov restricted so much, there was no chance. Those lawyers are not dumb. Once the trial started, they saw no way to win. Why throw money at fire?? The gov really set a precedent here. If they can treat drug dealers like terrorists, then why even hire a lawyer?? Better to plead, or shoot it out. I'm sure Chapo is regretting much already. I bet he's dead soon. It just sucks they gave breaks to so many scumbags to get this single conviction. And this whole Chapo charade has done absolutely nothing to ebb the flow of drugs. Another example of American tax money being completely wasted.

    1. Beautifully said.

What a waste of taxpayers money indeed. Would've been easier to swallow if forfeitures of all his assets paid for this trial. Along with all those witnesses so a lesson of crime does not pay to all. However, this trial only exemplifies that criminals working with government can keep their illicit assets and with lienenci.
This war on drugs has yet to make any sense nor difference. Rather, justifying the logic from those opposing America's strategy.

Get it together America. The world is watching.

    2. I think they thought they were gonna get money out of him, that's why no deal was offered. I think Chapo somehow hid his money better than anyone. Even with busting his money people, they can't find it?? Something stinks there.

    3. America is a mess. I think this trial shows way more about America than the Sinaloa Cartel.

  8. That actor should be careful now if he visits certain parts of Mexico. I guess he figured the press regarding this story is worth the risk.

To be clear even tho Chivis mentioned this, Chapo or his family had to prove money was clean before spending on lawyers or expert witnesses. In the mean time everyone who ratted gets reduced or no sentences...what a sham.
