The first fentanyl laboratory in Mexico is discovered in Culiacán

CULIACÁN._ Agents of the State Preventive Police and the Ministry of National Defense, after an attack by armed civilians, managed to secure a laboratory where apparently the drug known as fentanyl was produced, in the Lomas de San Isidro city housing development.

The foregoing was announced by the Secretary of Public Security of Sinaloa, Cristóbal Castañeda Camarillo.

Through a bulletin it was reported that Castañeda Camarillo, accompanied by the Undersecretary of Public Safety, Prevention and Social Reintegration, Carlos Alberto Hernández Leyva, who explained how the events occurred.

Hernández Leyva indicated that it was due to preventive excursions, that state and military police carried out between the avenues Parque Central and Bosque de Helechos and Abedules, during the early hours of Wednesday the 10^th, that they observed two people who were on board a motorcycle, who fired shots. at one of the official vehicles. The gunfire hit an armored DNXII unit, which is why personnel were uninjured.

Subsequently, the gunmen entered a home located at the corner of the street of Los Bosques.

Before this, the agents adopted corresponding security measures, and requested support to apprehend  them, since they evaded the authorities when leaving the house through an access that faced another street, giving way to flight.

He explained that the state and armed forces elements, detected strong odors of chemicals were being emitted from the house, and plastic containers were visible in the interior of the garage.

They proceeded to guard the site, while the search warrant was being accessed from the Attorney General's Office, to authorize entrance into the building and determine what was emitting the odor.

Hernández Leyva mentioned that, in consideration of the dimensions of the infrastructure, it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of pills could be produced, representing a huge loss for organized crime.

The holder of the SSP Sinaloa, Cristóbal Castañeda Camarillo, stressed that fentanyl is a little known substance,  located in Sinaloa, it is the first laboratory  of this type.

For its seizure it was necessary to use specialized attachments due to its high level of toxicity.

"Fentanyl is an extremely dangerous drug; this drug is a potentiator of heroin, is 80 percent more potent than morphine and obviously generates a large amount of addiction. The equivalent of three grains of table salt in the same amount of this material (fentanyl) can kill, an overdose of less than 100 kilograms, "he said.

"It is a drug that with 8.46 kilograms of this material can produce 8.46 million pills or pills and generate 169 million dollars approximately".

Therefore, he said it's important to know the characteristics of this drug to avoid contact with it, because it can result in death, and that is why the state of Sinaloa on instructions from the governor Quirino Ordaz Coppel, and under the framework of Citizen Protection strategy and the National Plan 2018-2024 Peace and Security of the Federal Government, deals and concerned to prevent these toxic substances from reaching the consumption of citizens, especially the youth.

Note: Although it was reported it was the first Fent lab discovery in the nation, Riodoce is reporting that 4 months ago there was a lab discovered in city of Azcapotzalco in Mexico City.  However, PGR indicated that the first lab was for various drugs not solely Fentanyl.   The one found in Culiacan was Fentanyl exclusively.
