930 pounds of meth-embedded carrots stopped at Reynosa-Pharr bridge

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat material from U.S. Customs

Customs and Border Protection officials found $18.5 million worth of methamphetamine in a commercial load of carrots crossing into Pharr, Texas.

The shipment was stopped at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge and searched at the port’s cargo facility May 17, according to a CBP news release. A secondary inspection of the tractor-trailer, using non-intrusive imaging equipment and a canine team revealed 384 packages of methamphetamine in the trailer, weighing almost 930 pounds.

The vehicle and drugs were seized by CBP officials and the case is under investigation by Homeland Security Investigations, according to the release.

“This is truly a huge, notable interception of hard narcotics accomplished by our frontline officers in the cargo environment,” Sylvia Briones, Port of Hidalgo/ Pharr/Anzalduas director, said in the release. “Our officers’ mindset and dedication is genuinely apparent as evidenced by this outstanding seizure.”

  1. Its unbelievable the amount of drugs coming in from Mexico. This seizure is one of many big catches recently by border security.
This epidemic of staggering proportions America is facing is outweighing those seeking treatment due to its availability.

Death is definitely upon us. How we tackle and approach this problem will determine our fate as a country.

  2. The only good thing is that the BP is realizing how the produce industry is enabling dope smuggling.
Free trade made it that much easier to smuggle into the US. With the cartel bosses getting much reduced sentences and then being able to bring their wives and kids into our country, what's the point of this so-called war on drugs anymore?

    1. Because too many Americans have a "living problem". They can't handle life on life's terms.

    2. 11:39 America has a big appetite for meth because big US Pharma took its time addicting their clients by providing them with prescriptions, after they got their pharmaceutics approved by law
the US legislatures and the FDA, which is being used as an excuse by Johnson & Johnson for their eagerness in trafficking their goods.

  13. We need more drug interdiction technology at the border, I know there are shipments that get through the border everyday. Bring that # down to as little as possible, supply goes down & prices go up.

    1. Yeah I feel ya,

But the flip side of that is price goes up, crime goes up too.

Just let people have there drugs. We don’t stop people from eating french fries, pizza, and a xl soda everyday. Yet heart disease is the number one killer.

Drugs aren’t illegal cause they’re dangerous. They’re illegal because it’s more profitable to the power’s that be to be for them to be illegal then legal. The revenue generated through the prison industrial complex, forfeiture and seizure, arms dealers working with both sides of the coin, and of course drug sales. Because you can bet your sweet ass that when they seize a ton of cocaine that they don’t really destroy it. No way that’s an insane amount of money, and not just any money, it’s off the books money. Money used to help fund black budget programs. The true purpose of the drug war
