Mario Cárdenas, known by the nicknames of El M1 and / or El Gordo, is recognized by Mexican authorities as the founder of the Gulf cartel fraction known as Los Metros, whose bastion was located principally in Tamaulipas, mainly in the municipality of Reynosa.

The first arrest of El M1 was recorded in 1995 when he was incarcerated, first in the Matamoros prison, and then relocated to the federal prison of Puente Grande, in Jalisco. The crimes for which he was sentenced to 12 years in prison were organized crime and crimes against health, after serving his sentence he was released in 2007.

Five years later, on September 3, 2012, Mario Cárdenas, with around 70 years of age, was captured in an operation of naval personnel in the municipality of Altamira, Tamaulipas. He was then identified by the authorities as the leader of one of the main leaders of the cartel, which would have been in charge of his brother Ezequiel; while the other leadership was Jorge Eduardo Costilla El Coss, who was also arrested by the Navy nine days after Mario Cárdenas.

At that time, it was reported that the reason Mario Cárdenas was transferred when he was incarcerated. Was because he had been identified as the one in charge of trafficking from the Matamoros penitentiary substantial amounts of cocaine and marijuana, for which he was transferred to the federal prison of Puente Grande until his release.

On Tuesday, the Attorney General's Office informed that the arrest warrant for the extraction of Osiel Cárdenas's brother was filed at the Federal Criminal Justice Center in the State of Mexico, in Almoloya de Juárez. In a request it was duly formulated by the US government and in accordance with the Extradition Treaty signed between the two countries. “The arrest warrant was completed without the use of violence or harm to third parties, with respect at all times for their human rights," the federal agency communicated through a statement.
