The Brooklyn Federal Court declared this conviction for the alleged involvement of the former official in a drug trafficking case.
The US authorities allege that a violent drug cartel that trafficked cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine to the United States bribed the official from 2013 until he was arrested in 2017.
Edgar Veytia , a former Nayarit prosecutor , was sentenced by New York judge Carol Bagley to serve a 20-year prison sentence , as well as to pay one million dollars ($1,00,000) after pleading guilty to being a drug trafficking participant. He pled guilty to participating in an international conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana in exchange for receiving large bribes.
Veytia used his position in the Government to facilitate drug trafficking.
The former Nayarit prosecutor, Edgar Veytia , was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison in the United States for a drug trafficking case . Veytia, 49, was sentenced in federal court in Brooklyn .
Veytia told the judge that he made a mistake in accepting bribes in exchange for using wiretapping and other police tools to protect the drug cartel.
During the hearing held on Thursday, Veytia was pointed out for using his position in the state government of Nayarit to facilitate drug trafficking to the United States by "a violent Mexican drug cartel ."
When working with the cartel, Veytia used the Mexican Police to protect drug charges, intimidate and harm rival drug traffickers. He also used his role as attorney general to obstruct justice when the cartel members were arrested, ” said Peter C. Fitzhugh, special agent in charge of National Security Investigations, New York Field Office (HSI).

On the case, the United States Department of Justice pointed out that Veytia served the H-2 Cartel , led by Juan Francisco Patron Sanchez . This criminal organization paid a monthly fee to the sentenced person for taking various actions in his favor, such as:
To free members and associates of the cartel after being arrested for offenses related to drug trafficking, instruct police officers to attack their rivals. In addition, he notes that Veytia helped the H-2 Cartel to cover up the murder of a rival drug trafficker in October 2015. Veytia admitted during his trial that he made arrangements to prevent the arrest of drug traffickers or to be released from custody.
He has US and Mexican nationality and lived from time to time in San Diego.
He did not detail which organizations he supported, but it is believed that the Sinaloa Cartel, led by Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán , was one of them.
Veytia was sentenced in the same courtroom in NY where "El Chapo" Guzman Loera recieved his life sentence. “When ... The sentence imposed on this corrupt Mexican government official makes this just such a day,” U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said in a statement.
“Neither Mexican cartel leaders nor corrupt officials who assist them should sleep well tonight," he added. "We are coming for you.”

DeleteWhat was the story behind Veytia getting popped? Veytia was supporting Los Hs from 2014 until 2017, when he allegedly sold the Nayarit plaza to CJNG and multiple leaders of Los Hs went down (H2, H9, H18). It would seem Los Hs were in conflict with CJNG, but in February of this year H3 (brother of H2) was captured in Jalisco. More specifically, H3 was captured in Tlajomulco, which points to two possibilities; either H3 was there for a meeting with CJNG, or H3 was there meeting with CNP. To me, CNP seems like the more obvious choice given the bad blood between Los Hs and CJNG, and that Aguila Beltran is apparently leading CNP along with Cholo. Anyways, I’ve always felt that Veytia getting arrested had something to do with him selling the plaza in 2017 and the ensuing violence.

In these cases it is never revealed how much money was paid in bribes. How come?
