"Culicanazo" Exacerbated the Friction between "El Mayo" and "Los Chapitos"

Yaqui for Borderland Beat from: Infobae

The battle for control of the Sinaloa Cartel gets complicated: "El Mayo" broke with "Los Chapitos"
The disputes between both sides have been happening, at least, since last April.

The failed operation to arrest Ovidio Guzmán López, son of drug trafficker Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, on October 17, in Culiacán, Sinaloa generated a break inside the Sinaloa Cartel, whose main head for Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada.

According to the weekly Rio de Janeiro Sinaloense after the so-called "Culiacanzo" there was a break between "El Mayo" with Iván and Alfredo Guzmán Salazar.

He explained that on that Thursday, when Ovid was already detained in the hands of the military ministerial police and elements of the National Guard, "Los Chapitos" asked for help from the forces of "El Mayo" Zambada but they did not support them.

This fact caused a more rapid deterioration in the relationships within the Sinaloa Cartel.
                                                          Ovidio and Iván Archivaldo
Another reason for the dispute between both sides, is that, according to sources consulted by RioDoce which were not identified, said that the commandos of "Los Chapitos" are looking for a "Mayo" operator nicknamed "El Ruso."

Despite being asked to hand him over, Ismael Zambada has refused, which has deepened the differences.

However, since last April, the weekly Zeta of Tijuana, already reported disputes between the sides of "El Mayo" and "Los Chapitos", allegedly caused by the Jalisco Cartel Nueva Generación (CJNG).

The confrontation arose between two leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel in that entity: Vicente Martínez González "El Güilo" and Felipe Eduardo Barajas Lozano "El Omega". Both criminals have their operations centers in the city of Mexicali, a key area for the descent of airplanes used for drug transfer.
According to the publication, members of the CJNG approached “El Güilo” to propose an alliance and keep drug trafficking in the entity, which would have generated strong confrontations.

On the other hand, in July of this year, Vice revealed that “El Chapo” gunmen refused to work with their children and switched to the side of “El Mayo”.

According to the sources consulted by that means "there is an exodus of gunmen from the side of ''Los Chapitos'', whether they are leaving Culiacán or moving to the side of Ismael Mayo Zambada."
From the eighties until the beginning of this decade, the Sinaloa Cartel (CDS) dominated the business of selling and transferring drugs to the United States, so the capture of its leaders became a priority for Washington.

That is why in 10 years, the US has issued 21 organizational charts on the organization of Sinaloa, in which it has designated leaders, associates and chiefs.

On November 19, the newspaper Reforma revealed that sources within the organization led by Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, ensure that the cartel concept was created by the Administration for Drug Control (DEA) English) and that in reality, the cartel does not have a unique leader, but is made up of families and groups.

For its part, the US Treasury Department has also linked dozens of people, families and businesses with the Sinaloa Cartel.

These are some organizational charts that have been developed about the organization:

The Leaders:
In December 2009, the US authorities identified Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera “El Chapo”, Ismael Zambada “El Mayo” and Ignacio Coronel Villarreal, as leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Two years earlier, the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control identified a financial network led by Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, which included several family members and companies located in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

In addition, they linked with the group two Mexican companies located in Jalisco and two others in Bogotá, Colombia.

Sources consulted by Reforma and who requested anonymity, explained that the Cartel is not a single family and neither an organization as the governments of Mexico and the United States have indicated.

They explained that the organization is made up of different groups: that of Ismael Zambada García, that of Rafael Caro Quintero, that of the children of “El Chapo”, the Cázares Salazar family, among others.

In May 2012, the US government included Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar and Ovidio Guzmán López, son of “El Chapo”, as key lieutenants of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Heads of Plazas:
Reforma states that according to the report of the government of the American Union, in 2013 the Sinaloa Cartel had operations in Baja California, led by heads of plazas in the border cities of Mexicali and San Luis Río Colorado.

While in the State of Sonora, he identified the leaders of Sonoyta, Nogales and Agua Prieta, also on the border, in addition to Caborca, Altar and Cananea, but they did not publish the names.

After the third capture of “El Chapo” Guzmán in January 2016, the United States government placed Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada as the cartel leader.

    4. 2:47 that's bc it's not true. If you bothered listening to the info that day many posts/ videos on social media showed Mayo's people there helping out Chapitos. 006 is saying he's mad about lies being told in the media when anyone paying attention that day was able to hear otherwise on the radios during everything. People should actually be knowledgeable before making untrue comments.

  2. Chapo was the Supreme cds leader but the flashy life style got the best of him. Sinaloa groupies still claim mayo was bigger capo but if he was the bigger capo there would not be any infighting within cds.
Mexicali is now cjng PLAZA, Los garibay and many other cds switched to work with cjng and the rest got smoked

I do get the sense that El Mayo doesn't receive the same kind of reverence that El Chapo did, despite the fact that he's never been captured. I can only assume that El Chapo managing to escape prison and evading the authorities for years afterwards made him more impressive to young sicarios than never being arrested at all.

Yeah I always thought that was funny..the Department of Justice and the DEA say Chapo was #1 in CDS but random borderland beat trolls say he wasnt so I guess I better believe trolls and randoms over the DOJ and DEA lmao. It was very obvious Chapo was #1, they dont tunnel anyone out of alti plano style prisons literally nobody. People escape from jails and low security prisons but not Altiplano and Puente Grande. Chapo escaped from both lol

  4. Huh. Other reports have said that El Mayo sprung into action when Ovidio was captured, and that a lot of the gunmen that took part in the debacle were his men.

As always, anything you hear about the Sinaloa Cartel should be taken with a grain of salt.

    1. Can you explain to me how this news can divide them? I put this article in the fake news area because I'm 100% sure that Mayo's people were there when Ovidio was captured/released. We all could hear it loud and clear in their radio communications. I'm sure that Mayo is smart enough not to start a war in his own backyard when they're fighting CJNG on other fronts.

    2. @1:50 were you actually there to be 100% sure of what you are saying?

    3. The alleged divide hapened when los chapitos ask for help to liberate ovidio guzman and el mayo refused. But ppl need to remember that el mayo already saved the chapitos from mencho. That was all el mayo or they wld of been dead. Also el mayo fought the el lisenciados faction when they tried to take over. El mayo was and is still the man behind the cds. Only time will tell if this ne2 rumors arw true. Speaking of rumors did you all hear tuat el chapo ordered the death of jenny rivera because she was going to do a sho2 in moterrey? And tue stupid ass reason why he ordered it or any artist that was friends of cds and wanted to play in zetas territory.

  7. It is impossible to know the true politics of this corporation. There are many companies that work under the name CDS and whatever the media knows/prints is what the corporation allow them to. Disinformation and speculation are the closest thing to the truth that outsiders can hope for. Until the house of cards comes crashing down that is.

But something tells me it is the ruthless insurgent style upstarts that are truly in the sights of those whose finger is on the trigger. Amlo wants order restored and will allow the old school to restructure a mega cartel like the Guadalajara of the 1980’s that is planted in firm bedrock not built in a way that a soft wind could topple it.. The microchosims will fall in line or be crushed. I believe this is his wish. Pax mafioso. I just pray for the Mexican people whose lives have been displaced and ravaged as a result of this war on drugs

    1. Interesting point.
I have leaned on this theory for a single cartel to operate with impunity for the sake of order.
However, question remains? Will these other cartels allow suite of discrepancies? After all its money being generated which will be impacted.

      Delete
    2. 1:40 Your view is interesting but I do not believe this is what AMLO is doing.
I believe it was a disaster for Mexico when Chapo was taken away because there was more order for the peoples all over Mexico than what is there today. Chapo and los CDS familias did not sell the drogas to the children in Mexico and the business was only to sometimes fight for new plaza but ultimately to satisfy demand for los drogas en EU. Los Chapitos have always broke the rules when Chapo is in prison and.now away and I do not think Mexico would be worse if Mayo let Mencho kill Alfredo.

    3. Frank, they’ve been saying that about every MX president since Zedillo:

“That the president wants a ‘pax mafioso’ with a single cartel structure”

Regardless if that’s true or not, it ain’t gonna happen. I think the last 20 years in MX has proved so...

      Delete
    4. Calderón REALLY fucked it up though. And yeah. In a perfect world (short of eliminating this wAr and savagery altogether)/a pax Mario’s a could work, except that drug dealers have huge ego’s!!!!! And politicians even worse! Shocking... THIS is why it is virtually impossible to run a DTO or illegal enterprise on a sustainable long term basis. There are of course the 1 in a million exception where you have ‘the humble-ish capo’ who is smart enough to avoid media attention (unless it is self serving) and keep their true power a secret

If in the coming weeks/months there are bold strikes against cjng and those who haven’t ‘lined up’ for mayo, then maybe we revisit this discussion.

    3. While Juan Abrego operated the gulf coast relatively solo, as in apart from the Guadalajara cartel(that our friend clarified in his commentbefore my reply) The rest of Mexico operated under Miguel angel felix gallardo (el padrino) and Don Neto beneath him. It was a hierarchical structure with one kingpin. It was he who called the shots and assigned bosses to their respective territories. As a result, for a time, things went smoothly with Mexian traffickers operating more like a bounce on the cocaine trampoline to the US, as the Colombians relied more and more on Mexico to diversify from the Caribbean and pacific routes to overland routes as to avoid losing loads to the authorities.

The Mexican Kingpins got wise to the fact that being paid in cocaine was far more lucrative than being paid say, 5 to 10,000 per kilo that they smuggled. Furthermore they realized, sourcing their own product direct from the Colombians, essentially cutting out middlemen and making the way for the likes of capos like amado Carrillo and azul (Chapo and Mayo as well) to gain control of their own business from the manufacturing process to distribution in the US. The Guadalajara cartel was the first to take their power back from the Colombians, and pay off elected officials like PRESIDENTS to operate with impunity, and lay in the cut, raking it in.... for a time. When Padrino went down, well, there’s plenty on Netflix to pick the ‘story’ up from there.

      Be well and stay safe

  17. Re: beff between El Ruso and some of Ivan's people seem appear to be true. I was in CLN in the summer and I heard stories between one of Ivan's trusted Lts. and El Ruso, which I took with a grain of salt but it seems that there could be more to that story. Basically I heard that Ivan's guy paraded the city trying to punk everyone and anyone, which included some of Ruso's people and talking shit about El Ruso as well. When Ruso confronted Ivan's guy by radio, there was no response so Ruso took the streets with his people to visit a few known safe houses but nobody came out. When I heard this entertaining story, I kind if smiled and kept listening because, well, its entertaining to hear these "behind the scenes" stories. Could be true or false, who knows, but it appears to coincide with the Ruso part of the story.
