Last week, high-ranking Tijuana Cartel member and ex-policeman Ricardo Bozada
Alvarado ("El Bozadas") was arrested at the Mexico City International
Airport after arriving from the Netherlands. The details of his trip
abroad were not made public. The arrest was conducted in coordination with the
Interpol, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the SEIDO, Mexico's
anti-organized crime investigatory agency. His arrest was officially confirmed
by the Tijuana-based and award-winning magazine Zeta this morning.
El Bozadas is identified by law
enforcement as a chief operator under Pablo Edwin Huerta Nuño ("El
Flaquito") and his relative José Luis Escudero Escandón ("El
Quieto"), captured in January 2020, as reported by Borderland Beat. El Bozadas is wanted for aggravated kidnapping
and organized crime involvement. He is mentioned in the same criminal
case against El Quieto.
Background
El
Bozadas is a former member of the Federal Highway Police (Spanish: Policia
Federal de Caminos). In 2019, authorities stated he was involved in a turf
war for control of the Ensenada with a Sinaloa Cartel faction. Among his rivals
were Víctor Manuel Padilla Murillo ("El Chatarras"), a trafficker
under Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, and Juan Carlos Araiza ("El
Marino"), who works under the Arzate García clan.
In
August 2019, El Bozadas was mentioned in a banner abandoned by gangsters at
Hotel Lucerna in Ensenada. In the message, El Bozadas and other state police
officers were accused of kidnapping and stealing from civilians. A body of a
slaughtered pig was abandoned next to the banner. El Bozadas was accused of
working for "El Flaquito". These details were reported
by Borderland Beat after El Chatarras was arrested that year.
In
addition, El Bozadas was also identified by Mexican authorities as being
responsible for two shipments of cocaine totaling 250 kilograms that were
seized by security forces in Ensenada on 10 and 11 March 2020. Both shipments
were transported in a boat from Manzanillo, Colima. As reported by Borderland Beat, Ensenada is one of the major seizure spots in Mexico since December 2018.
When El Bozadas was arrested at the Mexico City International Airport on 11 March, rumors surfaced that he may have been accompanied by bodyguards who work for Ensenada city official Marco Antonio López Valdez ("El Japonés"). El Bozadas's right-hand man was reportedly Luis Ángel Beltrán Ayala, a federal police officer based in Tijuana. El Bozadas will be sent to the Federal Social Readaptation Center No. 14, a maximum-security prison in Durango.
Damn imagine being as old as Bozadas with decades in the drug game, and you work for some kid half your age.

ReplyDeleteSo true. Most of the CAF updates only make it to local media. The CAF isn't making national headlines (with the exception of El Quieto's arrest). My gut feeling is that they are the ones with the old/deep political ties in Baja California and have never really been gone as some thought.
