In the middle of a pandemic and a
recession, drug cartels are doing a booming business.
In Washington state, the Drug Enforcement
Administration says methamphetamine is coming in from Mexico.
"We are very concerned.
You'll have regional distribution cells up here. These are high-level managers
that are communicating directly with Mexico," said Keith Weis of the DEA
office in Seattle.
In February, the DEA announced a
crackdown on the cartels' eight major transportation hubs in the United States
including Los Angeles, Phoenix and El Paso that funnel meth to the Pacific
Northwest.
On the streets of Capitol Hill
two weeks ago, KIRO 7 followed Travis Berge as he searched for used syringes
with remnants of methamphetamine. Berge is a longtime meth user and well-known
to Seattle Police.
"Really there is nothing in
my life that makes me functional quite like meth," said Berge.
Last December, Radalyn King was
accused of being high on meth when she drove onto a sidewalk on Aurora Avenue.
Her vehicle struck four people and killed a brother and sister. In late
December, Lee Skelly said he was high on meth when he drove a van through the
front entrance of a Ross store in Burien.
Berge was arrested last June for
assault, property destruction and resisting arrest. He served 240 days in the
King County Jail and entered counseling. KIRO 7 caught up with Berge after his
release in February. He said he was only doing meth on weekends.
"I've completely changed my
life from what I was doing before, shooting up meth 24/7, staying up all week,
eating trash. I've reconnected with my whole family," said Berge.
Meth overdoses have quadrupled in
King County. "We have seen a massive increase in methamphetamine overdoses
the last five years," said Dr. Caleb Banta-Green of the University of
Washington Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute.
In 2019, Berge downplayed the
danger. "People overdose on heroin really. People don't die off
speed."
While Naloxone is saving the
lives of opiate users, there is no such antidote for overdoses involving meth.
The cheap, long-lasting high of
meth is attractive to users. The DEA is seeing a dramatic increase in
Washington state.
"The prices have gone down
and the purity levels are high. Last year, we had a record year. We seized over
3,200 pounds of methamphetamine," said Weis.
Last month, Berge was back on the
streets of Seattle and back on meth every day. "COVID hit and I couldn't
get to a psychiatrist or a library to get a job." While Berge vowed to
return to his treatment program and pay restitution to his victims, he said his
first priority was finding his next high.
“I haven’t done meth since
yesterday. So, I’m gonna go and get high,” Berge said.
Who would of guessed that there was drug distribution and consumption in CHAZ. These damn liberals here will lead to those demons down south expanding their market share here in the U.S.

DeleteThis is not true chivis. I live in Portland and if you’re involved or know about the meth world, the PNW is the crown jewel of where to unload that product, Portland specifically. All I’ve been gearing from my tweeker friends is how dry the entire area is. Yes I said tweeker friends since they don’t steal from me. Price has gone up 40-50%. This reports are jot accurate.

DeleteSeattle is notorious for being EXTREMELY lenient on drug users of all kinds. IIRC every major cartel had a presence in the city at one time, along with other ethnic DTO's as well (Russian, American Outlaw Bikers, Asian).

DeleteIt usually gets to Tri cities or Yakima wa before it heads out to Seattle or Canada. My understanding is Tri cities and yakima is a port and it heads north or to east like Montana and north Dakota. Look into the Bueno DTO connected to the Sinaloa cartel they operated the area for a decade or so

DeleteIt def comes through Eastern and central Was, but a ton comes right up I5. There's a small army of people that cross on foot through SD, and have people waiting to pick em up, and drive North. They bring about between 1-5 pounds, at a time. A guy I know used to be a driver. He got $1500 a trip plus all the dope he could smoke. He had 30hrs from Oly to SD and back. Made several trips a month. He said wherever it was the crosser met him, there's be at least a dozen doing the same thing.

DeleteI agree, the article is wrong about it getting cheaper unless this article was written before COVID. December/January the lbs were 900-1000, right now they are 3000-3200.
DeleteYes, the prices are going up *and* the supply continues to flow. The cartels have used COVID as an excuse to jack up prices, which were running too low due to heavy market competition. Every cartel group is making tons (in some cases literally) of meth and that has driven prices down while purity has remained high. COVID letting them increase their profit margins.

ReplyDeleteI guess cocaine has fallen out of favor. Every coke user I knew that tried meth hated the stuff. From what I'm told, meth turns you into a sexual beast. Cocaine increases sexual desire but it is also is a vasoconstrictor.
ReplyDeleteProlonged vasoconstriction causes ischemia (reduced blood flow). And the male sex organ requires good blood flow to go long and strong into the wee hours of the night.
Cocaine ain't great for sex, probably why in part meth has overtaken it.

ReplyDeleteThat video is a hit piece by Sinclair broadcasting. It attempts to blame the meth crisis in Seattle on "Out of control homeless" but when other journalists followed up and investigated, most of the 'homeless' that were profiled in the video had apartments, they were just in meth psychosis from being up for too many days. They got so much shit that they tried to make a follow up, but nobody from the city or the Seattle police would even return their calls.
