Suspected members of the Northeast Cartel (Cártel del Noreste, CDN) left a severed head in front of the home of a Tamaulipas public prosecutor who has led important investigations against them. After the cartel members dumped the head in a plastic bag, they fired several rounds into the air and fled the scene before authorities arrived.
Investigators discovered that the assailants left a written poster threatening the official. This gruesome incident took place in Ciudad Victoria, the state capital. This city is the center of operations of the Old School Zetas (Zetas Vieja Escuela, ZVE), a rival faction of the CDN.
The public prosecutor in question is Jose Trinidad Brambila Cardenas. He has led multiple investigations against the CDN that have resulted in important arrests. One of his key cases is the one that resulted in the arrest of Ana Isabel Treviño Morales, sister of former Zetas leader Miguel Angel Trevino Morales ("Z-40").

The poster left at the scene calls out the agent by his name and accuses him of falsifying cases against others and that they would go after him regardless of how much time passes. The message was signed by an "admirer" but investigators suspect it was the CDN given the agent's actions against them.
Rough translation of the poster's message:
"I leave you this so you know I haven't forgotten about you. I will keep waiting for you in the other presidential term and in the next one too. You and your colleagues will soon realize that your superiors will no longer support you and your fabricated cases. ReplyDeleteI rarely comment although I follow almost every story, read every comment. We all have our reasons for being here and they are probably as diverse as our zip codes. Yet there is something fundamental most of us seem to share, shock and dismay at the volume and manner of slayings in Mexico at the hands of cartels.
ReplyDeleteI commented recently on the particularly sad post about Lizbeth Flores' gruesome murder, suggesting that it is time we began to call this killings what they are, human rights violations as they are not simply murders, but they are on par with the atrocities during the Rwandan genocide.
And here again, we see brutality and desecration of a human being that fundamentally contradicts the social contract of the basic of civil societies, let alone a nation that claims to be democratic.
Mexico's violence has reached the stage of severity in its brutality, frequency, and general disregard for the sanctity of life that it is beyond Mexio's ability to manage, monitor or independently resolve. These are human rights violations and as such, the UN should step in as they have in multiple regions throughout the world which have ongoing in-fighting between tribes, groups, etc. They are in Sudan, the occupied territories, Iraq, Syria, and on and on.
Perhaps this is something that will take a grassroots effort--like 10k signatures on a change . org petition? I can't imagine it will be done any other way because politicians in Mexico would actually have to care about the lives being lost in order to pursue a real intervention that would reduce the loss of life. I gather they actually don't have an incentive to do so bc they likely don't 'see' a whole class of people--these are the 'invisible' class, the poor or working poor who are the most vulnerable. Politicians are looking out for number one, themselves and that means who can line their pockets.
And journalists are severely limited given their lives are at risk. So, if we hope for this violence to keep from becoming even more egregious, the perpetrators more bold and ruthless, then a third party such as the UN Human Rights Commission and Officers with boots on the ground is needed. And the only way to get the intl community involved is for the very large population of Mexico to organize collectively at the grass roots level. Otherwise, this country is far from being a democracy. It is a lawless nation that can't/won't protect its own citizens.
