A woman from
Los Frenos, Texas, was found dead in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, on Tuesday.
According to the Brownsville Police Department, Lizbeth Flores (age 23) was
reported missing the day before after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border into
Matamoros via the Veterans International Bridge on Sunday. Local journalists
said that Flores had crossed to Matamoros to visit her boyfriend.
Mexican authorities confirmed that Flores died from head trauma from a
big rock found at the crime scene. But they also said that she was
tortured. The young woman had bruises across her body, had some of her
scalp detached and teeth removed by force. It was not confirmed by press time
if investigators suspected the murder was cartel-related.

Flores's mother, who decided to be interviewed without revealing her
name, expressed feeling powerless after not receiving immediate help from local
authorities. She claims that her daughter was kidnapped and murdered after
being the victim of extortion and robbery by an alleged cell of kidnappers
operating in Matamoros. Flores's family members were referred to the Mexican
Consulate in Brownsville for further assistance on the incident.
Though Flores's mother did not specify the group's name, the drug cartel
operating in the area is the Gulf Cartel (CDG). The Matamoros faction's
suspected leader is Raúl García Martínez ("Escorpion 2"). One of
his closest associates is Carlos Martinez Perez ("El Cuate"),
son-in-law of former Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas boss Osiel Cardenas Guillen.

Wow if they are not shipping or selling drugs, they kidnap for ransom. A US citizen for sure the FBI, will be investigating this one. I think even if they did pay the ransom, they would still have killed her.

DeleteI crossed into Nuevo Laredo about a month ago to get contact lenses for my daughter and to see an optometrist as I feel that after many years of using cheap reading glasses I needed something for distance. I walked from the USA to Mexico and was not questioned on the US side heading into Mexico. On return the ICE agent asked me the purpose of my visit and I told the officer to get contacts and glasses and showed him both. Than I was permitted to enter the US. Total time spent in Mexico less then 2 hours. Good quality prescription glasses 2600 pesos or about $ 130.00 USD. My wife usually pays $ 500.00 for glasses in the USA plus exam and mine included the exam with the price of the glasses. Bridge traffic is way down but I do not believe border crossings are that scrutinized. I did not feel unsafe across the border and I am an obvious gringo but I do speak Spanish.

DeleteActually, she could be pregnant. A gravid uterus has a particular shape when the body is in the supine position as this is. The fundus (top) of the uterus can be palpable earlier in a woman who has been pregnant in the past. No way to know without an autopsy but that’s the first thing that came to my mind as a doc. Also some hyperpigmentation on the lower lateral abdomen is consistent with stretch “marks”, but could be from rapid wt gain not due to pregnancy or a past pregnancy. It is all very sad to consider for this young woman and her family. May her soul and body Rest In Peace. Her family are in my prayers. Nobody should die like this. Certainly not a young woman at the start of her life. How can we accept this as human beings? This is a person. Someone’s daughter. Maybe someone’s mother. Someone’s sister. Humanity doesn’t exist where death looks like what savage animals might do to one another.

As a prison doc, I’ve treated the most violent among us without fear. Why? Because even the most violent prisoners live by a code. There are still rules for what is heinous and what is not, who is off limits and who is not. What can be done to a human and what cannot. Even the most violent in prison would face calamity for torturing a female like this. They would have a green light where ever they were transferred to bc the rules apply. You can’t do this to a female. And if she is pregnant, whoa. No, I’m not condoning the gangs of CA but I can say that after five years of treating thousands of inmates associated with them, I can sit face to face with one and check his blood pressure and know what to expect. I know I don’t have to look behind my back. There is a code when it comes to violence. You don’t just scalp a female, violate her and leave her for dead. That’s what the Hutus did during the Rawandan genocide. These are more than murders. Borderlandbeat, maybe it’s time to call these what they really are: human rights violations.

There's no telling how horribly this poor girl was made to suffer before they finally killed her.
I cannot imagine how horrific of nightmares that her poor loved ones are going to have just thinking about the torture that she endured, especially her poor mother.
Dr.: I worked in jail and prison mental health services and being bilingual and bicultural Mexican-American, I met many inmates who would agree with you 100%. There are certain crimes for which criminals have particular animus towards. Child molesters, rapists, and hurting innocent people can land a perpetrator in protective custody. Some prison systems have special units for child molesters.

ReplyDeleteThe article states the victim was kidnapped, robbed, extorted, etc... was this most likely for a reason or do they typically do that randomly? I am in MX fairly grequently and only a few times have I felt uneasy. Am I being naive or stupid?
