In a joint operation, elements of the federal and state police detained Alejandro Sánchez Santamaría, AKA 'El Negro', a former police officer who had become the alleged leader of La Familia Michoacana (LFM) in Toluca, State of Mexico.
The Attorney General's Office (FGJEM) detailed in a statement that the detainee, before engaging in criminal activities, worked in security and intelligence areas in the municipality of Toluca.
In addition, they said that El Negro was currently a priority target because he is the second in command of La Familia Michoacana in the area and is related to at least 19 crimes.
Alejandro “N” was captured during an operation on the afternoon of Monday, April 12, in the Centro neighborhood of Toluca. He was later transferred to a penitentiary in Otumba municipality.
The FGJEM clarified that was an arrest warrant against him for a homicide that occurred on May 21, 2020 in the Guadalupe neighborhood in Lerma municipality, where the detainee ordered another subject to shoot a man who was later found dead with a narcomessage next to him.
“El Negro” is being investigated for his probable participation in extortion and homicide in the municipalities of Metepec, Zinacantepec, Temoaya and Toluca, with a total of 19 homicide victims and eight extortions to bars and restaurants.
His arrest, explained the FGJEM, was the result of a joint effort between this agency, the State Security Secretariat (SSEM), the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena), the National Intelligence Center (CNI) and the Attorney General's Office (FGR).
This arrest comes a few days after Borderland Beat reported the capture of Ivan Rene, AKA 'El Boris', another high-ranking La Familia Michoacana member in the State of Mexico.
Efforts to crackdown La Familia Michoacana have been on the rise since March 2021, when members of the cartel ambushed and killed 17 law enforcement members in the State of Mexico: eight state officers and five prosecution investigators in Coatepec Harinas, and four more state officers in Almoloya de Alquisiras.
