"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat
The streaming platform Netflix announced this Wednesday the next premiere of '1994', a documentary series that will address "one of the most critical years in the modern history of Mexico" and that will include testimonies from political figures of the stature of former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari and his brother Raúl Salinas de Gortari.
It will consist of 5 episodes with a duration of 45 minutes each, which were directed by the Monterrey reporter and writer Diego Enrique Osorno, winner of the National Journalism Prize, and the collaboration of the journalist Manuel Larios as a researcher. VICE Studios Latin America was in charge of production.
“For almost two years we were able to document with full creative and editorial freedom this story that dramatically marked my entire generation. The objective is that the viewer can directly know fundamental and contradictory testimonies and then have their own and informed opinion.
For those of us who participated in this project, 1994 was also a trip to the immediate past where some keys to the present and many others to the future of our country are contained”.
From the assassination of Colosio to the "December Error"
The documentary series takes as its starting point the assassination of Luis Donaldo Colosio, then a presidential candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).
It also records the uprising of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), the entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada (today T-MEC), the end of the administration of Carlos Salinas de Gortari and the crisis known as "The December Error", with which the government of Ernesto Zedillo began.
In addition to the Salinas de Gortari brothers, the production includes notable interviews with Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas, Alfonso Durazo, Marcelo Ebrard, Othón Cortez and Commander Galeano (formerly known as Commander Marcos), who had not given an on-camera interview since the year 2006.
Among the testimonies that also stand out are of the journalist and businessman Federico Arreola Castillo, director of the SDP news portal.
The series will premiere on May 17.
