"Morogris" for Borderland Beat
Alexis Barrón Medina, alias "El Pelirrojo" (The Redhead) or "El Pecas" (Freckles), identified by security forces as the assassin squad leader of Los Oaxacos gang in San Quintin, Baja California, was killed this past weekend.
Reports indicate that Barron Medina arrived at a hospital in San Quitin after he was shot three times by unknown assailants. Investigators say they are unsure where the attack occurred. Barron Medina died shortly after he was received at the clinic.
Members of Los Oaxacos warned on social media that there would be retaliation for Barron Medina's death.
Public information about Los Oaxacos is limited. Local media outlets say that it is a small gang based in Baja California, particularly in Tijuana, Ensenada, and San Quintin municipalities.
San Quintin municipality was formed in February 2020. It was originally part of Ensenada. Much of the violence in these two municipalities are due to a gangland dispute between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the Sinaloa Cartel, and various other gangs.
As reported by Borderland Beat, various factions of the Sinaloa Cartel are fighting for control of Ensenada since the September 2020 murder of Víctor Manuel Murillo Padilla, alias "El Chatarras" or "El Negro".
Los Oaxacos were reportedly born in Tijuana sometime in the early 2010s by members from Los Talibanes and/or Los Chamulas, a faction once headed by Israel Osuna Abarca, alias "El Paisa" or "El Chamula Mayor".
In 2012, the leader of Los Oaxacos, Hector Antonio Salazar Monzon, alias "El Oaxaco", was murdered. He worked under Alfonso Arzate Garcia, alias "El Aquiles", high-ranking member of the Sinaloa Cartel.

ReplyDeleteThere are ALOT of Oaxaceños and other Southern Mexicanos that came to the San Quintin area years ago when the Big Ag projects/ empresas came in. The #1 highway used to be lined with families literally living in not much more than cardboard/ carton shacks and tarps, a piece of plywood and corrugated metal was rare. Now most of that is hidden behind the huge fancy façades of the gigantic corporate facilities and / or there are farm worker shelters, living quarters, even schools for the burgeoning population. A lot of push for more Ag workers rights too. The Ag scene there exploded w expansion and population growth. Entire towns and ejidos have grown up all through the area. I have always felt there is a lot more " there" there, ie illegal crops etc being grown along with all those organic strawberries, just further out. Well, we know that is the case if any of you remember all of some of BB's posts on fields of mota or poppies being busted over the years. San Quintin area has seen exponential growth and migration for Ag labor and along with that came ever more poverty, drugs and violence in the expanding barrios.
ReplyDeleteDown south in BCS the same thing is happening in Vizcaino, what used to be a tiny spot on the map between Gro Negro and Santa Rosalia ( how convienent geographically, right smack between the two Port towns, Santa Rosalia w the ferry crossing from Sinaloa and Gro Negro on the Pacific to the West.) Now, Vizcaino and its surrounding desert have been basically clearcut of Native plants for huge Ag production and another migration of Mainland Mexicanos came in for jobs/ work. Sadly, both pretty rough places with lots of marginalized people and crime. Plus COVID and the drought, Yikes.
Recipe for further disaster.
Yaqui is the scholar for this area. Remember, years ago and recently, many people are El Guero, and of origins of Mennonites, Mormon, Spanish blood and Ex-pats. When I speak in English, they are confused. This is a reply to the post, but the extraneous detailed commentary is pure Yaqui.

I follow this news because I believe it will become better some day - Mexico and it’s people are too beautiful to fail as a whole; I also help create this news as I fight day in and day out to better myself and kick the dependencies.
